SEATTLEPI.COM - It is 2011. The fateful hour approaches. The Avengers will assemble, Joss Whedon will call action, and geekdom will prepare for the cataclysm. They will either be torn asunder or united forever in conjugal bliss. Geekdom could in fact, cease to exist because the Whedon magic will extend and encompass so many people that fans of The Avengers will just be "people who liked The Avengers movie" and not simply dismissed as comic fanboys and fangirls...

I'm a whedonist and I do not like everything he's ever done. I really don't care at all about Dollhouse. I watched it. It had brief moments of goodness, but for the most part it was not for me. Joss doesn't get a free pass. I'm not so sure he will be able to pull off the Avengers. There's going to be a lot to cram into one movie. If it's not 2 and a half hours long I don't see how it can fit everything in. I'm still waiting with baited breath though.

Some of Joss' storytelling might have it's flaws, though honestly I think Dollhouse was hurt most by it's being compressed into two seasons and lackluster (and lack of arc) beginnings. It's like if Buffy was canceled after two seasons, and Joss had to think fast how to cram the rest of a five season story he'd planned in. My understanding is most people think the third season was when Buffy started to shine.

Anyway, flaws aside, I think Joss has at least shown he can handle a large ensemble cast. I don't think we'll be looking at a Spiderman 3 scenario, where the story becomes convoluted because of so many characters and so much going on. Much more than that I can't say. Fingers crossed.

He's proven he can handle a large ensemble cast on a TV show. I don't think he's proven it in a movie. Wash was pretty much a caricature of himself in Serenity. Inara was more or less a cameo. Book was barely used. The movie pretty much consisted of Mal, River, Simon, Jayne and some Zoe and Kaylee. I can't really see a way to do it any differently with the time allowed.

That being said I think he did a heck of a job with the plot of Serenity and I liked the operative. So, I still think he'll probably deliver a fun movie, but I don't know if the characters will really shine.

They're shooting most of the film at Albuquerque studios, which isn't far from me. And coincidentally, they'll be shooting mostly during my summer break. And luckily, I have a few minor contacts in the industry down there, so I'm going to try and get a job as either an extra or a PA on the shoot.

:o

Good luck!

If you can, see if you can't wear a blatantly Firefly shirt around the set. :) It'll send a message to Joss!

Thanks! It sounds like a fun way to spend some time. I almost got to be a Cowboy in Cowboys & Aliens last summer, but I'm taller than Harrison Ford, and they weren't allowed to cast anyone taller than him.
