Ok, nobody can dispute that Haken has worked
real hard bringing fireflyfans.net to us.
Many kudos have gone around and around again.
But his development system broke back in November.

(read thread about that here)
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=5&t=2797

He can use a bit help getting a new development
system and here is where us fireflyfans.net users
can put our appreciation where our mouths are.

If everyone can pledge $5 or $10 - a mere price
of a McD meal or a movie ticket - towards a new
development system (or one with borrowed scrounged
parts), I think it would be well worth for the
free time, service, bandwidth that Haken has
dedicated to fireflyfans.net and its users.

How about it?

(Tash had previously hinted at this for Xmas and many of you had responded already...)

What kind of system do you have in mind for collecting donations?

I've donated to some of my other favorite websites, and God knows, I'm here often enough! I'd be willing to chip in.

I suppose we can use Haken's already established Amazon honor system .
(the link is on fireflyfans.net's home/front page), keep in mind that
Amazon charges 5% + $0.19 for each transaction.
(so on $1, they get $0.25; and on $5.00, they get $0.44)

Thanks for the reminder - I'd meant to donate just after Christmas but forgot!

Done now, though

Done. I spend more time on this site than all others combined. Happy to contribute.
Thanks Haken.

I suggest everyone send their money to me. That way it will all be in one place.

You can trust me.

I'm a lawyer.

(Actually we could form a charitable organization...a not for profit, then collect money using that system. Could avoid tax issues and some other concerns plus open up cooperative opportunities with other charities. Could combine all activities under a broader head. Examples such as fan gatherings like the Brown Coat Ball and the DVD for troops program. Not to mention supporting the website and our militent anti-FOX wing. We could call it the Firefly Foundation or Serenity Association or People for the Ethical Treatment of Browncoats, I'd avoid a name using the term Alliance.)

what's the cost breakdown involved in setting
up a not-for-profit? Does it differ by state?

PayPal charges only 2.2% + $0.30 of
every transaction.

Fees would be nominal. That being probably a couple hundred or less for registration. The paperwork is pretty tedious so the usual real expenses come from getting a good corporate attorney to set it all up. Now if you happened to know a sympathetic attorney who could do it all for you it would be cheaper.

All this varies by state, but Ohio, where I am, is pretty good. I worked on a charity set up for some people who wanted to teach English in China (ie be missionaries in a land the forbids missionaries). It wasn't hard, but then I didn't do much more then proofread another attorney's work.

Thanks for everyone who kindly and generously donated so far. Haken can probably use a few more bucks to pick up something more than a eMachine. Especially since he is stuck on the MS bend ;-)

Anyways, if a few of us who don't already have signatures can include the link to this thread in
their sig (as I have here), then I don't have to keep bumping the thread. As it is, some of the other threads - e.g. "I have smg" - has 730+ reads. This one has only had 150+ exposures. Shame.

Well, I guess you could make a note to yourself come next couple of months when the CC clears up.

I don't know if Haken wants to set up a maildrop
as others do to facilitate non CC users or for other reason. I would set up a maildrop, except I really don't want the responsibility and I don't think there's enough interest in it.

What you could do is tag the URL for this thread into your sig like I have to keep the interest going without me having to artificially float the thread up.

Hi , I have been using PayPal for years (has it been that long?) now and LUV them.

Click below and tell 'em CapnRahn from Dimensional Privateer sent ya!

If I get any bonuses from referrals, I'll gladly donate a portion of them to Haken.

https://www.paypal.com/us/mrb/pal=U94KUKUKJ8PCE

Actually ... after Haken sets up a FFFn account at PayPal, he should put a prominant link with his referral code ... As other browncoats sign up for PP, he then could use the bonuses for the site.

Haken, if you have any questions, gimme me an email at CapnRahn@aol.com

Just donated again, on behalf of everyone who's still strapped for cash after Christmas

my contribution to the site, since I have no artistic talents at all!

I tried donating on Paypal but it wouldn't let me. The thing kept asking for my credit card's vericification number but wouldn't give me a slot to put it in. Am I the only one this has happened to? Am I missing something?

And I refuse to use Amazon because I'm boycotting them after they royally screwed me two years ago.

So, how's the passing of the plate going? Have there been enough donations to upgrade, and what does still he need to keep this place shiny? I'm sure that number keeps going up, the site has been improved upon regularly since I started ghosting over a year ago.
I used the paypal link on the home page a couple of weeks ago, and plan on making that a regular event. Heck, I pay for magazine and cable subscriptions, and this is well beyond those in terms of my appreciation...
Anyhoo, I'm not putting in a bid for cookies and juice here, I'm just wondering, could there be a little thingy on the home page near the donation links that tells how much he currently needs for the site? Unless I miss my guess, Haken's a little shy about even mentioning it, and it might increase the level of response to have a $figure, and even a mention of the specific gear he currently needs. Never know, some member or ghost might even have connections to make it happen as a donation. Non-profit status can work miracles when you apply the proper cerebral stimulation.
Could have the site flash you if you haven't donated, like the chat when someone posts. Just kidding, no electrocution or coercion, just talking about a little tickle.
