Hak, I really like your basic page layout. It's a nice variation on the standard top and left navigation bars model. But I sometimes find it hard to find the particular item I'm looking for. (Might be just my aging eyes.) It'd help if the items were a point or two bigger, and maybe in boldface. And maybe "HOME" a different color from the other items.

These are just the items on the top command bar, right?

Yeah, I guess that's what I meant. I was thinking of the stuff on the left side of the page the same way, but I guess it's not really.

By the way, what kind of screen resolution are your running on your computer?

I'm currently running 1152 x 864 on a 19" screen.

1280x1024 on a 21" screen. I can read the command bar all right, but there's so much stuff on the screen it's hard for the eye to home in on it. It just needs to stand out a bit from the rest of the page. Coloring it yellow was smart, but a slightly more prominent font would be even smarter.

Oh, just now, I had to resize the window, and I realized that you carefully avoid using fixed-width tables. Which every other web site does use, and which drive me crazy. Thank you! Clearly The Force is strong within you, my son!

Just for the record, I'm running 600 x 800 (thousand colors) on a 13 inch screen.

I know I'm probaly at the bottom of bucket, but I bet I'm not the only one. Still, this site is amazingly good for the old archaic computers. It even looks good in Lynx.

Tieka,

Hmmm...I try to be consistent with where I put the commands so that users would know where to look when they need to navigate.

Let me see what I can do about the font size, but I'm a bit reluctant to change it because the final number of commands that appears on the top command bar have not been set yet. I want to leave enough space so that I can add at least a couple more commands in the future. I would like to eventually make the commands into graphic buttons, but I realized that some users with slow connections turn their graphics off, which pretty much renders the graphic buttons useless to them.

Yeah, I prefer things to be relative so that I can resize the browser window to any dimension that I want without affecting the basic layout of the site.

While I'm not a "web designer", I always believed that form follows function, something that, apparently, many "web designers" have forgotten these days in their quest to cook up batches and batches of eye-candy.

I want this site to be functional above all else, and I want it to work for the users who visit here as much as it works for me. And I realize that what may be functional for me may, in fact, drive someone else completely insane, so I always make it a point to take user requests into account when I'm building this site.

In the end, it's the community here that will use this site more than I ever will, so why not make the experience as pleasurable as possible for the fans. On a side note, this is also why you will never ever see any ads (especially popup ones) on this site. It drives me completely insane, and I'm sure, it does the same for others.

Anyway, didn't mean to go into all that.

Second the motion. At the risk of embaressing Haken, I have to say this site is very, very impressive. There are rough edges, of course, but there's good engineering, good web design, and lot of usable and stable features. If there weren't so many signs of hand-tooling (like that table thing I mentioned) I'd be dubious of his claim that he built it from scratch.

Look guy, if you're ever considering relocating to the west coast, I want, I demand your resume!

You're like my first unofficial official staff member for this site. You gotta be able to view this site.

Thank you for the compliment. You mean there were doubters? If only they could see the stuff in the other tiers.
