The Girl In The Fireplace - easily the best episode of the season, and in my Top Five New Eps for sure.

Fantastic!

And I agree - it's like DT has been in the role for years, he's got it down Just Right.

I love, love, loved this episode. I am now officially hooked. I liked it well enough before, but now I'm a fan.

Yeh great episode. It reduced me to tears at the end. When Rose asked The Dr 'are you alright?' the Dr just quips back, with a forced smile 'I'm always alright'. However we all know he wasn't :(. Tenant has give the Dr alot of depth. The Dr falling in love is something we hever see. I can understand though as the Madame Pomferey was very beautiful :)

And apparently Sophia Myles (who played Madame Pomferey) and David Tennant are dating in RL.

As for the ep, well I missed it on Saturday (I struggle to remember its on, I'm so used to nothing being worth watching on saturday night), but I managed to see it tonight.
I didn't think it was "the best episode ever", nor was it as good as last week's ep, but hey, we all have different opinions right?
Having said that, it was still a great episode, with many laugh out loud moments, such as

Select to view spoiler:

The doctor walking in drunk whilst Rose and Mickey are being held by the bad guys. He was just downright hilarious... throughout the episode in fact

I thought the villains of the episode were really creepy too - a mixture of V (in V for Vendetta) and that robot villain from Hellboy
What I was pleasantly surprised by most of all though, was the musical score.
I'm not really a fan of the score in Dr Who - I think it's more distracting and off-putting than anything else, but I thought tonights was perfect... well, not perfect, but certainly a lot better than before.

Of the three episodes I've seen in the new series (I missed episode 2) and the christmas special, I've loved every one. Enough to make me want to buy the big boxset when it is released in November.
And, you know that old thing about your favourite doctor being the one you grew up with, or first saw... well for me, even though I grew up watching Sylvester McCoy and loved Chris Eccleston's performance, David Tennant is my favourite doctor by far!

Lastly...

Yeah Sophia Miles *drool*
There should be a few more pics of her out there now that she's done tristan and isolde and all that.
I first saw her in Underworld and saw a picture of her as Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds (Didnt see the movie itself) which made me want to find pictures of her then... but there weren't that many.
Hopefully that's since changed

I loved The Girl in the Fireplace. I had hoped that we wouldn't hear what was in the letter but it was just so sad, that she was still hopeful of his return and...

Plus lots of other neat moments too: "Sunday roast" (or not); the robot's logic; the Doctor suddenly running into a horse; his rubbish attempts at hiding.

How many kids checked very very thoroughly under their beds on Saturday?

Hopefully those same children will be scared witless tonight. Cybermen should be as frightening as possible.

Cybermen.

Select to view spoiler:

Not really all that fantastic, to be honest. Came over like big metal beasties, instead of that really unhealthy, sick, wrongness that you got off the old ones.

The arch baddie was just absolutely out-and-out hold your nose rubbish. The stary-eyed, clenched-buttock school of villainous acting lives. Unfortunately. (Grit your teeth, tense your neck, and skeak the usual clunky lines at the gack of your throat in a staccato nanner, and you're right there).

Rest of the cast great as usual, and not because of Rose dressed up as a maid, although that was awfully nice, I have to say. Mickey a total revelation, and good to see Pete again.

Nice Sky Captain stuff, except, of course with something actually happening on screen

And West Ham lost on penalties. Bugger.

Whilst I don't think the episode was bad, I do admit that it wasn't as good as others - I think though, because it's a two part episode, it has resulted in this first part seeming a big slow in places - I think the 2nd part will be fab.

Did anyone else watch Dr Who Confidential?
(possible spoilers for next ep follow)

Select to view spoiler:

Apparently Mickey will prove himself quite the hero in the 2nd part.
I'm worried though, given that we learnt some background for him in this episode, that we might not see him again.
Maybe it's just me but... late character development? a chance for a character to prove himself a hero? I've got the feeling that RTD is giving the character the send-off.
I just hope I'm wrong. I'd like to see him stick around a bit longer at least.

I agree with Haze on this. I thought the Cybermen look brilliant and they where pretty scary, however they could have done much better with the script. It just did not seem to be up to scratch of previous episodes. Last weeks episode and 'Tooth and Claw' where very good, however this week was an anti climax :(. I don't think trigger did well as a baddie. I was not convinced. Usually with Dr Who I've hated it when the episode has ended because I just want it to continue but this episode I just felt a bit deflated :(

No what I wanna see brought back are the Sea Devils. They always scared me :)

What a lacklustre introduction for the cybermen. How do you make a two-part cybermen story that is not scary and ultimately not particularily interesting?
I have trouble comprehending why this episode actually went out as it was. As much as I enjoyed the cybermen being back (though apparently these are just cybermen not THE cybermen) this was definately the first bump in what has so-far been a hugely entertaining season.

Cybermen can actually be scary. The Patrick Troughton Doctor story from God knows how many years back.

Trapped, with a mob of Cybermen advancing across the surface of the Moon towards the Moonbase.

I can't remember what happened next, but the image has stuck with me. Probably immaturity had a lot to do with it, I can only have been 5 or 6 years out of College at the time.

I thought 'The Age Of Steel' was a very solid episode for the most part - until the last ten minutes, when it became something else. Just seeing the characters go through changes and deal with what's happened, and make decisions based on what they've done, and their past, and what their future may hold - the whole end of this episode was wonderful, I thought. Great to see Mickey finally grow up.

Bring on next week - looks like it's going to be very creepy!

Haze. You git.

(The therapy is helping, but I'm still some way off managing gracious acceptance of someone else's brilliant one-liners...)

I thought the second half redeemed the story in a big way. Not much Lumic. And the speed of the Cybermen! Have a job outrunning them. I think they'd be vulnerable if you pulled over a gobstopper machine. Some gags never get old.

I still can't understand the soundtrack policy, though. Sound effects and foreground music totally drowning out the dialogue.

It's like the sound engineer's previous job was on tour with Motorhead, and they sacked him because they realised that he was actually deaf.

I see no comments about last nights episode. I did like the episode however it explained nothing about alien (Maurean Lipman). The no face thing was very scarey. You steal someones face and you take everything about that person. They did it in The Twilight Zone and that's one of the most memorable episodes. I just think the episode never explained enough. My PC has been in for servicing for over a week (again) so I haven’t been able to comment here for a while.

I liked tonight’s episode. But the thing is, I don’t get why the Doctor was so amazed by the fact that the planet was is orbit of a black hole. Rassilon captured one and used it to power Gallifrey for Rassilons sake! When I found out the episode was set around a black hole and would feature an enemy that the Doctor has faced before my mind immediately went to Omega and the Master (both trapped in the event horizon of different black holes) but no its another enemy trapped in the… event… horizon.. of… a… The Doctors enemy’s really should just stay away from black holes!

The old enemy might just refer to the person doing the beasts voice , but then again maybe not. We shall see next week.

I totally love the new Dr WHo series. My friend hates it and I found out why. Because he found out it was the same dudes who did 'Queer as Folk'. I told him I hated Queer as folk I thought it was rubbish. I'm not really interested in seeing dudes kissing each other but it was also nonsense. However, in the words of Seinfeld, there's nothing wrong with that :). I told him how homophobic he was and told him George Lucas was gay and then he cried .LOL. Strangely Queer as Folk fixed my homophobia even though I wasn't a huge fan of it. At the time, anything with a Who reference merited a watch. Nowadays I wouldn't have enough hours in the day, what with not one, not two but three, three Doctor Who programmes every week.

I'm just glad Who is holding up in the ratings, even beating the football match that was on opposite it on ITV.

Personally, I'd rather they scheduled it in a proper prime time slot. I waited until it was dark to watch the episode and it was much scarier for it.

Gravity schmavity.

Also a good homage to Aliens and Event Horizon.

We sniff the air, we don't kiss the dirt.

If no one minds a post from someone across the pond--We're a little behind on our "Who"--the Sci-Fi Channel just aired the 2nd part of the season 1 finale Friday night but a lot of us very excited about the new season that should start soon.
