Finally got round to reading my paper and found Bill Nighy has been cast as the new Doctor Who. For those of you thinking 'who's he?' he was the washed up rock star in 'Love Actually'.

The other contenders were Richard E Grant and Alan Davies. (I liked the idea of Davies. I don't know Nighy's work well enough to make a judgement on this choice)

There will be a 'feisty young assistant' called Rose Tyler, the role has yet to be cast.

In one episode the doctor travels bck in time and meets Joan of Arc. The BBC want Audrey Tautou (Amelie) to play Joan.

Russel T Davies (Queer As Folk) will be executive producer and writer.

But - THEY MAY NOT INCLUDE THE DALAKES!!!!!!!!. If thats the case I don't think I will be watching. They were the best bit.

(EDIT - keep reading - it will eventually make sense)

Or Christopher Ecclestone, who was actually announced

Bill Nighy was apparently offered the role, but turned it down. Not sure on either of them - Nighy is too far back to the First Doctor, and I just can't see Ecclestone in the role. That said, I'm intrigued to see how it turns out, although I've never been a Whovian myself.

Btw, on the Daleks, they are in negotiation with Terry Nation's estate - I think they are hopeful.

Well this is confusing. I was listening to radio 2 when they announced it was Bill Nighy. Later in the day I read my paper and they had an article saying the same thing. I have just checked the BBC website and they say its Christopher Ecclestone!

I guess the website would be the most likely to be correct. Sorry for making the wrong announcement.

As above, not sure you did - Nighy was, by many accounts, first choice. That said, Ecclestone is Russell's actor of choice, having played Jesus in his Second Coming mini-series. A large number of papers jumped the gun by a day or two with the Nighy announcement - sounds as though it fell through at the last minute (or will Nighy be in the series as The Master or some such?)
