STRANGEBIRD

Guillermo Del Toro has been official signed to direct The Hobbit and the as of yet unnamed film based on Tolkien's work. For me this is a relief. I really couldn't think of anyone better other than Peter Jackson. And since he has commited to only Produce the films I think they made a great decision.

He's shown he can direct a wide range of films, from the dark yet touching Pan's Labyrinth to the action-packed, quite funny Hellboy. Hopefully with the obvious cast members back with the exception of Sir Ian Holm as Bilbo Baggins, I believe he has stated before that he feels he's too old and gave his blessings for a younger actor to be cast. Seeing as Bilbo was much younger during the time frame of The Hobbit I think that this is a good idea.

I really think Del Toro's sometimes dark feeling will add well to various scenes in the film. Good example being Mirkwood with the giant talking spiders. He has shown he can also direct comedy and action very well so I'm really stoked.

Anyway, thought I should share this with those of you who don't regularly check news on upcoming films. I know there's a large portion of our community that at least enjoys Tolkien.

Feel free to post your thoughts and complaints. I'll also add I am a bit disappointed the book won't be broken into two films but I guess it was inevitable. Still somewhat apprehensive about what the other unnamed Tolkien adaptation might be. Narn I chin Hurin? Or perhaps the Quenta Silmarillion or Akallabeth? Or as some rumors suggest a connective bit between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings?

P.S. Sorry had to show off my knowledge of Tolkien with the more obscure titles. I'm a complete dork, I know. And probably a bit off on a couple.

P.S.S It looks more likely that a connective film will indeed be what the other unnamed film is.... ok that was one awkward sentence. Sleep deprivation does that.

I've got to agree with you. If not Jackson then Del Toro is a great second choice. Pan's Labyrinth is an excellent movie.
It is a pity about Ian Holm not reprising his role but I can understand his concerns. Even with CG they can only take it so far in making him look realistically younger. I hope they find someone good who at least looks a little similar.

I also hope that they make the film darker and less of a childrens book, it has the potential for it. I love the book as it is but the film needs to be in line with the LOTR movies and Del Toro has the darker touch.

As for the unamed project I'd vaguely heard it might be set between The Hobbit and LOTR using reference and other material from Tolkien to form a story. Maybe it'll be several stories from his work linked together (Gandalf telling stories round a campfire type thing). Who knows though until they announce something and that may not be until The Hobbit is done with.

Hang on - I thought that, thanks to a certain item of troublesome jewelry which he acquires during "The Hobbit" Bilbo hadn't visibly aged between the end of "The Hobbit" and the beginning of LOTR?

All I can say is they best tread carefully where the other film is concerned. If they make up too much they risk turning off some of the true Tolkien fans. I agree it will most likely be something to bridge The Hobbit into The Lord of the Rings. I'd bet good money it focuses heavily on Gandalf. Maybe some backstory from the Silmarillion and the Histories of Middle Earth. It better be done well though.

For one thing Ian Holm himself is a bit too old, and Bilbo did age quite a bit just not nearly as much as he would have in sixty or so years. He was in his 50's I believe, during The Hobbit, which is roughly the age Frodo is during The Lord of the Rings. Hobbits age much differently they we do. I may be a bit off on the ages but I know it's not very much. I'm going to research it right now.

I have business in town but if you wish to look it up here's a good site to start at.

Bilbo was roughly 51 when he started his quest to Erebor and Frodo was 50 when he left the Shire for Rivendell and beyond. The flashback in the LOTR was ok but for a whole film I'm certain they need to find another actor. I love Sir Ian Holm and hope they can fit him into something, maybe near the end or beginning of the second film.

For some reason, I was under the impression that Frodo was in his 30's when he left for the Fellowship journey. Dunno if it's because Elijah Wood looked so young in LOTR or just casually breezng past the part in LOTR which talks about the passing of years since Bilbo's leaving.

I'm ok w/ the change of Director, but thought Pan's Labrynth was pretty damn dark. While parts of The Hobbit clearly lend to being dark and evil, I'd hate to see the whole movie go that way. It was meant as a children's book, after all.

As for the breaking up the book into 2 movies, what's up w/ that ? I wasn't sure how that was going to play out, but now it seems as if only 1 movie is to be made. Is that right ?

Can't wait.

About the two parts idea, well I at first felt that it might work. I guess I was just hoping they wouldn't cut out large parts like they did with LOTR. I'll be happy if they can even pull it off as well as they did with the others. Which isn't perfect but they did a great job.

Director wise I am actually more excited about Del Toro than I would be if they got Jackson back. Guillermo can do funny, light stuff. And he mixes it well with darker themes. Alot of folks hated Hellboy but I think it's mostly the goofy latexed up old guy. I personally enjoyed it but didn't love it until after watching it a second time. Pan's Labyrinth is very dark. Hopefully we won't be getting a twisted, macabre version of The Hobbit. I seriously doubt we will, however.

Also about the ages. I really am not sure exactly what they wanted to do in the films. Did they just decide to erase over a decade of the story or did they just skip ahead, and seeing as none of the characters shown earlier in the film were humans, figured it wouldn't matter?

Either way they should look at the film more from the book to movie adaptation and not as a direct prequel to the LOTR films. There's not really much they could change that would make it inaccurate when measured up to the other films. In other words I hope they don't do new things or remove others JUST because they want to make more comparisons to the film. For instance, if they remove Beorn due to some idiotic comparisons to Hagrid or something I may accidentally, in an uncontrollable fit of rage and disappointment, murder the closest movie-goer*.

* denotes a major exaggeration.

Which ever way they go, Sir Ian Holm doesn't seem to be a logical choice for young Bilbo.

It'd make more sense to include Beorn in TH, for what they DIDN'T show in LOTR, that being Tom Bombadil. While totally unrelated characters, I felt each reflected the other, as the anthropomorphic embodiment of 'Nature' in a changing world, the coming of the 4h age.

btw, you're no 'geek' or dork per LOTR. Just well versed

I better be well versed. I've only been reading Tolkien's writings since I was eight. I still have my aunt's old severely water damaged boxed set from the early seventies. Pages falling out and yellowed from reading them so many times. People always ask me why I have it so reverantly placed on a shelf.

I get why a lot of fans hate the films but honestly for every bit they did wrong they made up for it twice over with what they did right, at least in spirit. No one in Hollywood could have done much better. It's the best book to film adaptation, as far as Fantasy/Scifi are concerned. I even see why they cut out Bombadil and the reclaiming of the Shire and all. Flow in books is a completely different entity than on film. It might have been done differently but it's a matter of budget, time and direction.

Ok the latest news is that Del Toro is not yet official. Sometimes I wish journalists would mention that its a rumor or unconfirmed. IGN usually does a decent job at that.

Either way Del Toro has stated he is very interested and would love to take on the challenge of Tolkien's "Most fairytale like story".

Oh well I hope he gets it. The Hobbit deserves a director with his level of talent and experience. I'm not a fan of all his work but the ones I do enjoy are some of my favorite films of all time.

While I don't want a 'rush' job on this movie, I really do think they should move it along.

Ian McKellen isn't getting any younger, and while Gandalf doesn't appear in much of the story, he's one of the few who would appear in both Hobbit and LOTR trilogies.
