This looks like it will be a great movie. I didnt like OOTP, they left out too much. But this one
looks much better.

Looks awesome! It's about time they made the movie.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I am hesitantly enthused. Half-Blood Prince is my favorite of the series, though, so I'm very likely to be annoyed if they get something wrong, which they invariably do. I'm not talking about leaving things out, which is also done on a large scale, and I get it with time restraints. No, they always get something horridly, dreadfully wrong. (um... IMO)
I think I've already spotted a story change in the preview
I never saw the film version of Prisoner of Azkaban, my second favorite of the series, and from what I've heard about it I never will.
I guess we'll see if I ever sit through this one. A lot of things about the trailer make me, as I said, enthused. But hesitantly.
I have to say I like Hermione more and more every time I see her. I never thought the actress really looked like the character, but she's undeniably fantastic at acting her.

The Prisoner of Azkaban movie was really good and it did follow the book alot. The only movie that came up short was OOTP. Its so sad that books are finished but at least we got 7 books and i believe there will be 3 more movies ( including the Half Blood Prince). I still reread the books from time to time. They are so good.

I'm going to see half-blood prince, but I doubt I'll care about Deathly Hollows. Hollows was just that...hollow. Boring plot, idiotic final battle, no spark. To me Hollows felt like Rowling didn't have an exit plan and was just throwing paint against a canvas knowing that someone would think it genius.

I found half-blood prince to be an interesting tale and it should make an OK movie. I agree with the statement about Prisoner of Azkaban. That was, I believe, the strongest of the books and translated easily into the strongest film. I'm not sure what Phoenixrose thought was going to be bad about that movie.

The strength of PoA was the reason the Potter franchise rocketed off to stardom.

I've got to disagree with the comments about OOTP. I thought the film was terrific, bar a few complaints here and there. It was far superior in the direction and cinematography in my opinion, and of course the acting is always getting better, but also for the first time it just felt like a brilliant film that wasn't just jumping all over the place.

Sure, they always have to miss out on stuff, but I guess I just manage to see the films as an accompaniment to the books as opposed to a full adaptation.

I also thought that Deathly Hallows (Hallows, not Hollows) was fantastic, and the reason some people didn't like it was quite possibly because the tale of HP was so epic that....any ending was going to be something of a disappointment.

Hell, I felt slightly disappointed with the ending of Buffy on first viewing...

the movie was chopped up and the special effects were only a fraction of the other movies.

The Order of the Phoenix book is the largest book based on the shortest movie.

Here are some parts of the movie that was actually story line deviations and untruths:
1) Neville did not find the Room of Requirement – Dobby did
2) Cho was not the sneak it was Marietta
3) Beatrix did not use avada kadavara curse to kill Sirius
4) Luna and Harry thestrles scene

I personnally would have liked to see these scenes in the movie...

1) The real reason as to why Harry and Cho had a falling out, The scene at hogsmeade at "madame puddifoots"
2) The scene with fred and george getting back at Umbridge could have been better, they made a huge swamp, it would have been nice to see her asking the teachers for help and have all of them refuse.

3) The part when the students were taking astronomy OWLS and down below they could see hagrid being attacked by Umbridge and Professor McGonagal being shot in the chest by Umbridges wand.

4) QUIDDITCH was NOT even mentioned in the Movie. RON was suppose to be keeper for the griffindors!

5) Ron and Hermione were Prefects!

6) When Arther Weasly got bitten by the snake , they didnt mention or show St. Mungos hospital. It would have been awesome to see, also neville's parents and gilderoy lockhart where all in the hospital. That is when every knows what happened to nevilles parents.

Still, I liked the movie, I do wish it was longer. I think the Harry Potter series is one of the best written, and acted stories of all time. JK Rowlings is so talented. I hope she can do another.

I had been so severely disappointed with the first two movies that I didn't see the third, but my best friend saw the movie before reading the book. When I tried to talk to her about several plot points from the book, such as the animagi, she had no idea what I was referring to. That's the one that sticks in my mind the most, but for all intents and purposes we seemed to be talking about completely different stories. So I never saw that one, I never saw Goblet of Fire (again, my best fried saw it before she read the book, then kept texting me about all the ridiculous deviations the movie had taken while she was reading the novel) I did see OOTP, and Hixie outlined quite well the problems I had with that movie. Of course it would have been impossible to include every single story element, but there were many things that could have been included instead of scenes that Rowling never wrote or imagined. Also, Umbridge should never have been so pretty. That woman certainly looked nothing like a fat little toad. She's not the first casting choice I've had some issues with, either. I love the way the characters are described, I like to see them portrayed well on screen. The Weasleys are mostly good, Harry is very good (he should have green contacts and messier hair, but I certainly think he fits the part) Hagrid is awesome, Snape is very good, etc, but there have been quite I few I didn't think fit the part as described... I digress.
I have read all these books so many times I've lost track. I know the stories like I know my address. When there are needless and stupid deviations, or major plot points cut, or things made worse than they were (the obstacle course to the Stone in the first film comes to mind) or things are added in to make things 'easier' when an actual scene from the novel would explain things just as well.... I could go on, but these things make me cranky. What did I think would be bad about it? I thought it would butcher the story. The trailer for this movie looks like it might be more loyal, which would make me quite happy, but I'm wary of it because, as I said, my favorite book and hence the one I most want to see done justice.
Lord of the Rings proved that great movies can be made with a lot of loyalty to their original incarnation. Yes, they were long movies, but they also proved an audience will sit through a movie that long if it's good enough.
Half Blood Prince can be done justice. However, I'm not going to hang any hopes on it.

PhoenixRose I see exactly what you're talking about, and Hixie as well, I too am not pleased when they change things for seemingly no apparent reason, as I've always been a huge Potter fan. I suppose the reason I manage to enjoy the films and love them as much as I do is that it expands on Harry's world and lets us see, often beautiful, representations of what's in the books, yet I'm very aware of the fact that the books will always be there when it's over, and I am able to separate the two very easily.

Probably my biggest problem with the films so far was the recasting of Dumbledore. Richard Harris, may he rest in peace, was absolutely perfect in my opinion, and yet Gambon, so far, seems wrong for the part (although he WAS better in OOTP). He always seems much more angry and bitter, and not so old and wise. Yet when I go back and read the books, I never picture Gambon in my head, I picture my Dumbledore.
Am looking forward to getting OOTP on BluRay soon actually, since it was definitely visually amazing.
And am off to get my copy of Beedle the Bard tomorrow! :)

and now i shall shh...i've talked enough for this post...

Neither actor playing Dumbledore has come close to the Dumbledore in my head. I've always thought Peter O'Toole should have been Dumbledore. Twinkling bright blue eyes, able to project an air of wisdom and slight insanity, just needs the long white beard.

I'd second that casting...
Richard Harris may not have been perfect, but I thought he was excellent and would've grown well with the character.

Ah well, judging from the trailer, I've no doubt I'll love Half Blood Prince...just have to wait now...stupid delay...

I'm with you, Rose

I am hesitantly enthused[b/].

Invariably the movies almost never match what we have in our own imaginings. Read the book and it was wicked-good. Could not put it down and read it within days of buying it.

But, gorramit, it does look good.

I love that Hermione whacks him on the head when he gets to full of himself.

Tawabawho?
