If I can try to paraphrase Joss, x-files might have ventured into fantasy rather than scifi. Joss had indicated that spaceships, space travel, were acceptable scifi concepts, but precognitive or mind-reading or other ESP was more fantasy. Don't recall where he drew the line.

I have to debate that. I was really, really, super obsessed with this show. Like, you have no idea. I could recite whole monologues and do endless trivia. But. The sixth season was pretty much dreck. I stopped watching. I couldn't take it anymore. It broke my heart.
From some reruns I've seen, the final seasons might have had some of that old goodness, with intriguing stories and old favorite characters back in action, so I might watch those someday. But really, though, they should have eliminated some filler and wrapped it up a few seasons before they did. As soon as the fate of Samantha Mulder was found (which was a lame fate, btw) the show should have ended. Tie up all the shadow conspiracy stuff, find Samantha, then Mulder and Scully run away together and the show is done.

I can agree with your assessment of what category to put the X-Files into, it definitely isn't straight sci-fi as there are too many other elements involved. Personally I prefer the label 'paranormal drama' although that still doesn't cover everything.
It's something that annoys me with Buffy and Angel when they get labelled as 'sci-fi'. Both fit well into the fantasy genre, maybe even fantasy horror if you want to be a little more precise.

I am a huge fan as well. All nine seasons on dvd plus the movies on blu-ray. I also have replica prop (cheap plastic thing but it looks right) of one of Mulder's guns and his and Scully's ID badges.
