I just heard that a director of animé films, Satoshi Kon, passed away from cancer at age 47. (RIP)
http://io9.com/5620836/rip-satoshi-kon-director-of-paprika
I was only vaguely familiar with his work, since somebody loaned me a movie of his called Perfect Blue, and I didn't care for it at all.
I'm gonna have to check out his 2006 project, Paprika, though, because it bears an uncanny resemblance to Inception.
Here's the IMDb synopsis: "When a machine that allows therapists to enter their patient's dreams is stolen, all hell breaks loose. Only a young female therapist can stop it: Paprika."

Somebody even made a Paprika/Inception mash-up...

Neither film is the first to deal with invading the dreams of others.

It's in the execution, not the premise.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

Well, maybe it was just that shot of the hotel corridor, with the guy floating in zero-g, that tripped me up.

So, we're promoting piracy on Firefly fans now?

Interesting...

On a sad note, the director of Paprika dies this week.

A person with your signature ("... lead him to a quiet place and kill him.") is disapproving of others? You are unclean! I don't think you have any amount of moral credibility. I challenge you to a duel on this very page!!!

To all those people whose moral values have been warped by Firefly, a show about killer space pirates who disrespect wealthy Alliance corporation Blue Sun, I urge you to straighten-out your life by honoring, with money, the memory of deceased director Satoshi Kon. Please send $9.99 to the wealthy American corporation Amazon in honor of Satoshi Kon - www.amazon.com/Paprika-Satoshi-Kon/dp/B000ZJ0AGU/ In return you will receive instructions on how to download Paprika to your TiVo® DVR or Windows PC.

I have challenged you to duel. The first one to laugh loses. I dare you to make me even smile. I will go first with my pirated comic book, which I actually also purchased.

I impatiently wait for your return salvo of funny!

EDIT: MANY HOURS LATER: I've waited impatiently for Storymark's response. The duel started ALREADY! There must be a clear winner in this duel and loser.
If I lose, I add to my signature: "For another season of Firefly who do I kill at FOX?"
If I win, Storymark's new signature is: "For more Firefly I'd bonk Rupert Murdoch!"

Did I win, already? Did Storymark laugh?

Dude, I've no interest in your duel.

The quote is from Mark Twain. Edumacate yourself next time.

Edumacate myself? "I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way." - Samuel Langhorne Clemens www.neoperspectives.com/MarkTwain.htm

This should be the new Storymark signature because the old one is overly belligerent: "It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare." - Samuel Langhorne Clemens

That's a good quote as well. I'll stick with the one I have though, as it feels very much like something one of the crew might say.

And really, how belligerent is it? I'm kindly and forgivingly murdering them in cold blood. That's not so bad, right?

In your sig, give credit to Samuel Langhorne Clemens. That way you'll seem like you're two centuries behind everyone, which is far better than seeming to be full of crazed belligerence. Be more like Mal, not at all like Jayne. Damn, I just realized your picture is Jayne. Never mind me.

And you got a video to sell. www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.asp?b=8&t=44946 That explains why you're so concerned about pirated video. It's all about your money! Since I would never pay for Highlander Season 2, I shall pirate download it.

Actually, I'm not making a dime off that Highlander set. Did it for the exposure.

I will try and make some $$ of the follow-up episodes, though.

Digressions and duels aside, I pointed this out on the Inception discussion thread here awhile ago and I'm glad that someone else is seeing the similarities. The hall scene for one is something quite similar between the two.

One of my favorite similarities would have to be the elevator sequence in both.

The scene I'm taking about starts around 3:45.

I think the main element in both films that people are keying on is the use of a machine to enter other people's dreams and manipulate them.
Hell, if Harlan Ellison had written Paprika, he'd have filed a lawsuit as soon as the first Inception trailer came out.
