Sure it's fun, just like Diamonds Are Forever & You Only Live Twice, but my take is that the best Connery Bonds are Dr. No & Thunderball- they reached that perfect mid-ground between fantastic & realistic. From Russia With Love strayed into the "realistic" realm a bit too much for me (which is why it's a fave with so many, I conjure).

Thoughts?

I think that's fairy's nuts. I like Dr. No more than Goldfinger too. Although i alo like On Her Majesty's Secret Service as well and everybody seems to hate that one. Maybe it's just patriotism but George Lazenby was WAY better than Roger Moore or Timothy Dalton.

Dr. No is probably the best but Goldfinger is way betterer than Thunderball. "You can turn off the charm, I'm immune."

Just remember there are plenty of agents waiting to get their second kill when you talk about Rodger Moore. Lazenby sweet baby jane he couldn't get 99 in bed. Goldfinger was the big budget blockbuster after to Russia with Love put Bond on the map. I like Dr No but Thunderball's hijacking of a atomic bombs off of Nato's bomber I thought was so cool. At that time it was cool stuff. Casino Royale I guess has made the most cash ever. The Dalton years where very 80s but the budgets seem low. Ya know everybody wants to be Bond, Bond girl, But nobody wants to be a bad guy. The Bad girls always get swayed by Bond. Cause it aint sweetsie.

Hey- I like Lazenby better than Moore or Dalton as well. Hell, I like him better than Craig too.
But if Connery had been in OHMSS, I believe it would have been universally praised as THE BEST Bond movie ever to this day.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Lazenby is easily better than Dalton and Moore and it's a pity he didn't get to appear in other Bond flicks. Moore was a comic Bond, fun and light-hearted but not a true Bond. All his movies rank at the bottom of my list of Best Bond Movies (but still above Die Another Day). There still, generally, good movies but just not amongst the better ones IMO.

As for Connery in OHMSS that's an interesting point that bears some merit as it's a great story that would suit his take on Bond. Of course we'll never know.

As for Goldfinger being over-rated then I have to disagree with you. Although I guess it depends whether I look at it from a 'fave' or a 'best' POV. I really like the movie even with it's obvious bigger budget and flashier FX/stunts.
Of course, as I mentioned Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice in the other thread it could just be you 'having a dig' at my picks.

Are you having a Bond DVD season by any chance?

Not at all, man. Just re-eval-uating. But I will not ster-il-ize.
Perhaps I'm just seeing the series differently now that I'm almost as old as Connery was in Never Say Never Again, heh heh.
In the end I feel that while Goldfinger WAS great, it just wasn't the *best*. Other flicks can equal it in writing & direction IMO. Not many though, I grant you.

You must be psychic, L.

Just a note here; We will *never* see a bigger Bond movie than You Only Live Twice. Its scope was beyond imagining today. All the CGI in the world will never replace the MAMMOTH sets & REAL stuntmen.
Sigh.

Bond was the prototype, but James Coburn's Derek Flint took the ladies' man/spy genre to a different level.
