I almost missed this - kind of like Firefly when I first saw it, it didn't grab me until the 3-4th episode, almost deleted it off our dvr list. But now... once you get past the huge cast and make all the family connections it's really very intriguing, quite a rivoting show/story.
HBO has done their typical high quality production, and the casting in particular, is remarkable all the way down the line, hard for me to think of any one actor that "owns" the show because each and every one of them is great in their part (although Peter Dinklage is my fav as the Imp).
Season 1 ended with a bang, can't wait for season 2... reading the books until then, thank the new gods there are 5 of them!

I finished all four books (bought as a set) in two weeks. Just in time for the 5th book to come out. A bit of forewarning (without spoilers) that the 4th and fifth books were supposed to be one book, but it was too large. So GRRM took several (of my favorite) POV's out of the 4th book and integrated them into the 5th. The 5th book has a bit of backtracking at the beginning, so it's a little frustrating at first. But it eventually picks up and delivers a fun ride.

I really enjoy how the show really stays true to the story in the books (with the exception of at least one character being renamed - supposedly to alleviate viewer confusion). I can't wait for the season 2!

America loves a winner!

I only caught it on demand, and had no idea what it was. Never read the books, and probably won't. Sean Bean... wow. Really like his work, sucks he lost his head though... Wasn't completely sold at first, but man... it really got addictive as the season went on. So many good characters / actors.

No HBO, so I'll be waiting for the DVD release. Looking forward to it, though.

Same here - I think LOTR dispelled the notion that screenwriters NEED to change a story to make it work for another medium. Sure, different format, different techniques, but keep the story.

The show is one that is best viewed multiple times imho - it is so rich. On my second viewing it was even better.
Jon Snow's story, The Wall, great idea. "Honor" was one of those Fantasy themes that I thought had been pretty well played out, but RR Martin brought a new twist that was completely believable to me, I didn't just have to go with it and suspend any disbelief.

No body brings serious, "bowed but unbroken" like Sean Bean!
I loved it when in the dungeon the eunuch tries to convince him to kiss the queen's great aunt fanny or he'll die... "you grew up with actors, and you've learned your trade well. I grew up with soldiers... I learned how to die many years ago..." Ooooo.

*** SPOILER ***

Yeah, I was shocked to see his and Drogo's somewhat early exit. But, unlike 2 other character murders I know of (I kid) these actually made sense. This is what JW wanted, something to propel the story and ratchet up the suspense. Martin succeeded, Wheldon failed completely.

Season 2! Crazed, fun-to-hate young King Joffery and The Queen Mutha V. The Imp - that should be fun. The Night's Watch riding north of the Wall "I'll not sit idly by and wait for danger to come to me..."
Oh yeah, and Dragons. I think the dragons are going to either make or break the second season - if they aren't done right they could make it a bit too skiffy.

I watched the second time around on an ipad and HBOGO and headphones (so free) - not sure if you can get that or have a notion to - I was surprised how good it was like that (not an online watcher usually). 'Course, can't watch with anyone else on an ipad, not well at least. And if you have a nice set-up TV-wise + surround, this will be even better, definite BluRay eventually.
