BOBKNAPTOR

Willow was communicating with everyone in episode 1 of last season (when buffy was dead and she was leading the pack).

I've got a theory, that it's a demon... a dancing demon! Neh, something isn't right there...

My theory is that Willow is the one who has the telepathy skill, and she's the one who formed the bridge between Buffy & the XandMan. Buffy did tell Willow to get Xander. That makes me think that she doesn't have the ability to communicate with Xander on her own.

I know, I know. I don't have to talk when I answer you. But I saw The Fury and that way lies spooky carnival death.

LIVINGIMPAIRED

OK, for the record, I think that this whole thing with Giles has "red herring" written all over it. However, whether it's the First or another instance of typical Whedon misdirection, it is clear that the Giles Thing is deliberate.

This is from the shooting script for "Bring on the Night"

Quote:

ACT TWO

INT. SUMMERS' HOME - LIVING ROOM - DAY

It's a few moments after the act break and everyone is gathered in the living room. Buffy, Willow, Xander, Anya, Dawn, Giles and his charges - three Potential Slayer girls.

Oh - Andrew's still tied up in the corner.

The mood is somber - Giles has some splain'n to do.

(NOTE: It is VERY important that GILES not touch or be touched by anything. He can walk and talk - but he can't fiddle or cuddle or caress. Got it?)

Hummm...

In the scenes from a few weeks ago, he was never pictured in any position other than standing up or walking, so I am slightly puzzled.

Actually, in the past two episodes, Giles has leaned against several walls and tables.

But!!

When The First impersonated Cassie (wasn't that the girl's name?) to get to Willow, it sat in a chair and leaned on the table.

Uh-oh ...

And I'm positive at this moment that Giles is NOT the First. Even if the First had wanted to see the "Eye Thing" to see if it gave any indication of how to defeat the First, it would have tried to keep Anya from getting the information too, by saying something like, "No Anya, you stay here in case the portal closes and it need be re-opened!" or seomething akin to that. If Giles is "dead" he's a ghosty with the best of intentions.

Unless of course The First knew all along what the Eye would say, so it knew there was no harm in playing the Giles role to the hilt for Anya's benefit and, through Anya's report, for the benefit of the rest of the gang.

There's another thing that's been on my mind though, and some clever soul has probably already raised this question elsewhere (I don't pay good attention to boards and threads and discussions), but what if The First WANTS to be defeated. Not just defeated, but destroyed. Maybe it was actually hoping that the Eye would give them some means to end its existence.

Maybe this situation is something more than just Big Bad Guy Wants to Destroy Good Guys. Some things The First has said (about being over the whole balance thing, planning a big apocalyptic ending, stuff like that) lead me to wonder if it wants to end itself. Taking out the Slayer and anyone within about a light year or so is just a plus (if not the only way to pull it off -- to destroy evil once and for all, good has to be destroyed as well; or as long as any living thing exists in the universe, evil or the potential for evil will exist).

Which means this whole conflict, slaying the Slayers, then getting them to Sunnydale, is all a cleverly orchestrated scheme. In seeking to defeat The First, Buffy and the gang are actually playing right into its grubby little mits. All it has to do is keep them angry, keep them fighting, and it'll get them to destroy it (and themselves in the process).

I mean, you've got to imagine being evil from the beginning of time gets a little tiresome. You've got this ongoing battle with good that neither of you can ever win because the balance will always maintain itself. How hopeless. How boring.

Now that the scoobies have poked and prodded Giles, and convinced themselves that he is indeed corporeal, this thread should not just be left hanging.

What if Giles is not the First, but not Giles either? Perhaps there is another player in all this... some anti-first, or some associate of the first that, like postulated previously, wants to undo evil and good at the same time. (The Dogma theory.)

Wasn't it Giles that told them the first couldn't touch anything? Hmm...

As for Tony being around to play Ripper, a prequel would probably require a much younger man, which is sad because ASH should be bronzed and left as the sexy "older" man forever, but makes much better sense than having a 50-ish man playing a 25-year-old. Maybe he could play Ripper's mentor.

Of course, after all the butt kicking Ripper delivers in BTVS, getting decapitated while looking the other way would be a very un-Joss like way to kill a character. Red herring is looking good here, but I'm not willing to rule further mischief out yet.

Hi i´m from Argentina and i don´t really know why you say Giles could be evil because we are just in the first ep of the new season. But for what i read, if it is because he doesn´t touch stuff i don´t have a clue, but if he did something evil, he could be under the first´s control with the help of our loved deceased technopagan and member of the clan that restored angel´s soul: Miss Jenny Calendar.
I mean, she´s dead, couldn´t the First use her essence to make Giles do his bidding?

Now, is Giles weird or what? But he shook hands today with Wood, so he is not one of the Firsts 'normal' projections. He may be something else or not, but he is still acting totally strange...
