Okay, Joss Whedon & Angie Hart wrote the song that was at the beginning of CwDP, as Angie sung it, but does anyone ahve the lyrics to this hauntingly lovely song?

This is my first time transcripting a song, and this is my best guess:

Quote:

Night falls; I fall,
And where were you?
And where were you?
Warm skin, wolf grin.
And where were you?
I fell into the moon.
And it covered you in blue.
I fell into the moon.
Can I make it right?
Can I spend the night…
High tide, inside.
The air is dew,
And where were you?
Wild-eyed, I died,
And where were you?
I crawled out of the world,
And you said I shouldn’t stay.
I crawled out of the world.
Can I make it right?
Can I spend the night…
Alone.

I've been haunted by this song all day. Until this thread was posted, I didn't know it was written my Whedon, and now I'm all thinking. He wrote it, and it played a large part of the episode, so what does it mean?

My guess: the speaker of the song is Buffy. The song--as far as I can tell--seems to have a very lost feel to it. "High tide, inside," is obviously a reference to her emotions. Buffy has a tendency to bottle her emotions until she explodes (ie. "Weight of the World"), and let's not forget that she let the seeming betrayal of her friends in "Becomming 2" fester for five years. (ie. "Kick his ass") CWDP was all about her venting, and letting things off her chest.

The references to the speaker dying, in this instance can be taken literarly, as well as the "crawled out of the world" bit.

Now, the question is, who is the song/poem addressed to? The speaker/Buffy repeatidly asks "Where were you?" in an accuastory tone. Now, the "wolf grin" and "said I shouldn’t stay" portions seem to indicate Spike, which would make sense, as most of her venting in that episode was over Spike. Yet the "warm skin" line would indicate otherwise. I believe that the "you" is plural. This is addressed to all the men in her life: Angel, Riley, Spike. Where were they when Buffy had to sacrifice herself to save Dawn? When she had to be sixteen, the Slayer, and a child going through a devorice? Through her mother's death? (Ok, Angel was there for a bit on the last part, but clearly not a long as both of them would have liked) The point is--we all know this already--Buffy always feel ultimately alone in all she does. No one else it the Slayer. (Kinda) Ultimately, no one is there for her, as she sees it.

Anyone like to take an alternate stand? Any ideas on the part about falling into the moon and painting blue and what not? 'Cause I'm stumpped.

Ok, not that anyone cares, but I just finished reading the shooting script for CWDP. It's an interesting read, to say the least. It still has Tara as Willow's visitor. And it sheads new light on "Blue":

Quote:

INT. BRONZE - NIGHT

Now we see the source of the sounds from the previous scene. On stage, a BAND starts to play a mournful tune. It's full of loneliness. Pain. You know, season six stuff.

We move slowly from the band, through the crowd, finally resting on SPIKE, who sits by himself.

It's clear as we move closer that the music reflects Spike's inner state. He's lost, hurting.

So, the song is probably written about Spike, and not Buffy. But since the song can be interpreted either way, is this a way of Whedon making another tacit parallel between them?

That song gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it.

Is there a full (3 or 4 minute) version of the song in existence somewhere?

The next BTVS-based compilation disc is shaping up to be quite a collection. The song from CwDP; The Breeders; Cibo Matto; Aimee Mann... off the top of my head are all acts we've seen/heard on BTVS the past few seasons.

Hopefully such a disc is being developed!

More Info:

Angie Hart of the band Splendid performed the song (it's called "Blue").

Upon visiting the band's official site, www.splendidtheband.com, I learned the webmaster plans to post a better version of the song in the future. Currently their mp3s of "Blue" are recorded off of the broadcast like the mp3s linked above.

I also found this bit of info:

Angie will be appearing in a "bit part" on the television series Firefly, which I have (quite honestly) never heard of. The episode is still being filmed, and we have no air date as yet. We'll be getting back to you with that piece of information as details are revealed. For the moment, we know that Angie will be portraying "a church whore who sings amazing grace over a grave site acapella." In addition, she has a single line. And, for the record, she's glad not to have more than that, as she is nervous enough as it is.

Sounds like one of the three eps we ain't seen yet.

Sorry, but Joss tried to get a Buffy soundtrack vol. 2 out a long time ago, but he couldn't. That's why it's one of my many hobbies to collect MP3s of songs featured on BTVS and making my own compliation disks. So far I'm up to 123 songs....

Most of those songs I found at http://impermanence.hispeed.com/lw/index2.html

http://www.buffymusic.net/ is also an invaluable resource for a Buffy music fanatic.

Also, as a point of interest, in thank you's section of the Once More With Feeling Soundtrack, Angie Hart is listed. She is married to a swell fellow by the name of Jessie Tobias who played guitar for Alanis Morrisette (a.k.a. God) and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He was also Musical Director/guitarist for Michelle Branch (another Buffy guest!) and Vanessa Carlton. Both Tobias and Hart run the band Splendid together and were, along with Christophe Beck, instrumental (ha!) in putting together the Buffy Musical. All of which Whedon points out in his introduction to the CD.

I managed to locate a single copy of this song, and it was hell trying to find it. It's complete, full length, and in mp3 format.

If anyone wants a copy, e-mail me at geckox@rogers.com and we'll meet online somewhere so I can send it. The more people that get a copy, the better... that way it can be spread around. It's a nice tune.

Is this a copy ripped from The Angie Hart Project, or is it just taken from the episode itself? If it's the former, well.... *droool*

Orius,
Just curious if you were planning on posting this song somewhere soon.

Has anyone downloaded a copy of 'Blue' from Orius yet? If so, perhaps you can post the mp3 somewhere easily accessible...

Thanks for your help!

That very well could be the composite version I did...I copied the earlier and closing versions of "Blue" from an encode of the ep and blended them together as a combined MP3, fading the two parts together in the middle. It actually does sound more or less like a more complete version of the song and I was pleased with the result. As far as I know, it hasn't been officially released in any format. I don't mind sharing for those looking for it.

This was acctually a score soundtrack that you are refering to, not a pop soundtrack. It was fully produced and ready to be published, but 20th Century Fox wouldn't give it the go-ahead, believing that it wouldn't sell very well. The same thing happened ayear or two later to an Angel pop soundtrack.

Apparently, "Blue" either is already out, or will soon be released on a CD entitled The Angie Hart Project. Which makes me wonder if there are more parts to the song than we have already heard. Cause that would be really shiny,

Neat, I hope that's the case. I know according to her site when they recorded it, that was the name they put it under, but I hadn't seen anything about exact plans for the song and/or CD.

It was about just about everyone. Trying to single it out to either of them, or even both is ridiculous. It kind of fit everyone's situation, excepting maybe Dawn. The whole Tera-Willow situation fits, and so does the Anya-Xander thing.

Heya
The Lyrics to that song you wanted:
BLUE

Night falls
I fall
And where were you?
And where were you?

Warm skin
Wolf grin
And where were you?

I fell into the moon
And it covered you in blue
I fell into the moon
Can I make it right?
Can I spend the night?

High tide
Inside
The air is dew
And where were you?

While I
I died
And where were you?

I crawled out of the world
And you said I shouldn't stay
I crawled out of the world
Can I make it right?
Can I spend the night
Alone?

I also love this song! When it blacks out at the end and you just hear "alone" it is so haunting and amazing!
Love from

Hello All,

If anyone would like to hear me sing the song "Blue", let me know and I will sing it for you...by the way, I have an 800 tele so that you won't be billed.
I offer this because there are times when I'd love to hear someone else's voice singing beautifully and just letting myself get wrapped up in the music. If anyone would like to lend their voices to sing songs, I'd like to know.
Also, if anyone would like to sing "Blue" so that I could listen, let me know.
