I recently sent in my application to a summer program at Washington University in St. Louis and was looking through the possible courses...and i saw this one... thought it was interesting...

SCIENCE FICTION AND RELIGION: MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU
This course examines religious and spiritual themes in science fiction and fantasy. We will discuss millenarian, apocalyptic, theological, and alchemical themes in classic works by H. G. Wells, C. S. Lewis, and Robert A. Heinlein, and in Star Wars, Star Trek, the X-Files, Harry Potter, The Matrix, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and other films and TV programs. The course will introduce genres such as Christian fantasy, Hindu science fiction, magical realism, and Gothic fantasy. We will also examine new religious movements, or "cults," growing out of the fan subculture. How seriously should we take popular entertainment? What happens if we take it too seriously?

MAL: This is my scrap of nowhere. You go on and find your own.
SAFFRON: You can't just leave me here, on this
lifeless piece of crap moon...
MAL: Sure I can.
SAFFRON: I'll die.
MAL: Well, as a courtesy, you might start
getting busy on that, cause all this chatter ain't doin' me any kindness.

Just what I was thinking - almost makes you want to go back to college!

Almost...

"Why would I want to leave Serenity?"
"Can't think of a reason."

When I was at the U. of Arizona many years ago, they already had a class called "The Philosophy of Star Trek" - and that was before any of the newer Trek series had come out. It was based solely on TOS.

Recently, I've read that there are classes on BtVS at many schools, not just in the US, but in England and Australia, also.

There's also an academic website devoted to Buffy, listing many academic papers and studies related to our favorite slayer. I can't remember the web address offhand, but I'll add it to this post if I can find it.

EDIT: This is so easy, I should have remembered it right away. The BtVS academic site is www.slayage.tv and it includes lots of interesting, but academically oriented (and sometimes long-winded) articles on Buffy.

Apathy on the Rise. No One Cares.

There are numerous Buffy based "philosophy" books out there too, with more to come according to Amazon.

I'd have been a whole lot more enthusiastic about school if I'd had these options...

"Why would I want to leave Serenity?"
"Can't think of a reason."

CHRONICTHEHEDGEHOG

I'm doing something pretty similar to that next year (hopefully):

Primetime Writers: Television Fictions

Covering Dennis Potter, Alan Bleasdale, Jimmy McGovern, Russell T Davies, Stephen Poliakoff, Steve Bochco, David Chase, Joss Whedon and Gene Roddenberry.

This isn't too surprising. While I don't think my school had a course on Buffy, I used the show heavily in my undergrad history honors thesis (Which Witch is Which: The Rise of Neo-Paganism as a Religious Movement in America and its Effect on the Archetype of Witches in Popular Culture.).

Sounds like a fun class.

At UCLA there aren't any classes on Buffy or anything too interesting. *But* in a visual media english class I took the professor showed OMWF (on a projector, I was thrilled to see it movie-size) and clearly knew her Buffyverse. A friend of mine had a Buffy fan professor that gave Buffy questions for extra credit. And for the final I just took this morning I was required to read a book with an interesting chapter on Buffy and female empowerment.

The closest thing I have at my university is a class about The Sopranos. But you have to pay a bit more so the prof can cover showing fees or something.

I would love to take a class about Buffy. If they showed episodes in class, I could totally skip because I own all of the DVDs.

But would you really want to skip? Maybe it's because i'm po' and don't own any of the DVD sets, but i take any chance I can get to watch eps of Buffy.

Early: I only hurt people because they keep getting in the way of me finding you. Tell her.
Simon: What am I? Your advocate?
Early: You are starting now.
Simon: He's really very...gentle...and fuzzy. We're becoming fast friends.
Early: You folks are all insane.
Simon: Well, my sister's a ship. We had a complicated childhood.
