I read a review that said seasons 4-7 were filled with 90210 sex and Dawson Creek angst, and that the characters we saw in seasons 1-3 became cartoon versions of themselves at the end. This same reviewer said Angel started out fine, and only got better, having it's best season in 5!
Having only gotten to the first third if Buffy, S3, I can't comment on this. Does it make any sense to the ones of you that've seen 'em all?

Just curious Chrisisall

Well, there certainly is a lot more sex in the last few seasons, that's for sure. And some of those relationships weren't too popular with the viewers...

It's hard to comment without giving too much away. But yes, there is a whole lot of angst coming up! And some singing. And bunnies.

Come on Chrisisall, you know you're in it for the long haul - just knuckle down and watch those remaining seasons...!

Well I'd say that's a lazy review to what is a very rich series of episodes. There are all those things that you mentioned, but Beverly Hills 90210 it most definately is not.

However as the very astute Fray101 said - you know you wanna watch the rest Chrisisall!!! Don't fight it bud.... Give into to your desires.

I resent becoming obsessed.
But seein' Cordellia talk down that western-like vampire- that was great! He totally bought it, and she was so cool, I thought she would faint.

Cordy fan now Chrisisall

I admit, I'm lovin' it.
But why would the guy not like the latter Buffy's, but totally praise Angel to the hilt?
Just a less teen-like show, maybe?
And, I already know about Willow's change to the all-girl team in 4, but she seems so into guys!?! The jump in the visual quality makes a really big difference. If only S2 was filmed this way!
If they top 'Anne', my head will explode! That was one of the greatest hours of tv I've ever seen.
Is Angel as kick-ass as that episode, in general?

Sellin' blood next Chrisisall

Angel, in general, kicks ass. Angel (the character) becomes his own man-pire when he's out of Buffy's shadow. It starts out a little slow, kind of monster-of-the week, but then the show finds it's own tone at the end of the first season. Angel (the series) might be more... uhh "comfortable" for Firefly fans since some of the themes are the same. These are adults who know who they are (in Buffy they're supposed to be younger and still finding themselves) and they live in a tough, tough world. When things are so bleak, it's hard to do the right thing, or even care enough to help people.

And there's lots and lots and lots of fights. ;)

Season 4 of Buffy doesn't have as strong of a story arc as seasons 2 & 3, but it's the season that has some of the most experimental and interesting episodes.

90210. pshaw rite. It never got that bad.

It's lookin' like, one more season of Buffy, and my journey towards the Mutant Enemy side will be complete.
Does Angel (the character) become more multi-faceted in his own series, I mean, I guess he has to, right? He's good in Buf, but kinda one-note, too.

Does Angel become more multi-faceted on his own show...? Yes, definitely. On BtVS, they mostly focused on Angel as he related to Buffy - the focus was on their relationship. On his own series, the focus is on Angel as a person/vampire separate from Buffy. So you get to see more of his evil side, as well as a humorous side that wasn't evident on BtVS. He definitely becomes a more rounded character.

I'd like to echo what others have said about BtVS 4-7. There's plenty of sex and angst, but NEVER does the show descend to the teen soap opera levels of 90210 or Dawson's Creek. That idea is absurd - I think someone above said it was a lazy review - that's an accurate assessment.

EDIT: I think everyone here will back me up when I say that the WORST episode of either BtVS or AtS is better than the best episodes of 90210 or Dawson, if those shows actually have any episodes that could be characterized as "best".

Apathy on the Rise. No One Cares.

Personally, I thought that Season 2 and the first half of Season 3 were the most soap-operaish, 90210-ey seasons of Buffy. I think that Buffy finally perfectly balanced drama, action, and comedy around the midpoint of Season 3, and kept going strong until the end. Well, I thought Season 7 was a bit of a let down...too much girl-power stuff for me, although Nathan Fillion was great. But seasons 4, 5, and 6 were perfection. Of course, my two favorite characters were Spike and Anya...so that might be why I like those seasons so much. I know a lot of people who don't like any Buffy post Season 3.

Oh, and Angel finally does develop as a character on his own show. I never really liked him on Buffy. Angel does get better every season.

GROUNDED

Everyone is quite right to point out the laziness of that review, but I have to agree that the dependency of the storylines definately shifted towards the character's inter-relationships. To be honest, I think this is fairly symptomatic of aging series.

"Personally, I thought that Season 2 and the first half of Season 3 were the most soap-operaish, 90210-ey seasons of Buffy."

I don't think that's true. The comparison is easier because they're in high school, but there's very little soap opera involved. The stories drive themselves, with the angst and hormonal component coming second. I'd explain this in the context of the later seasons but it's be all spoilery.

"Angel does get better every season."

I think Angel, like Buffy, has three almost perfect first seasons, then stumbles in its fourth and recovers well in the fifth. Whatever you think in the end, you *have* to watch the whole lot.
