Will his work on Firefly mean Joss has to spend even less time on Buffy? The episodes that he writes and directs are always thee most sublime and I hope he has time next season to focus on doing a few for BTVS. Or will he be totally engaged in Firefly??

My assumption is that he will be *overall* less involved in the series; however, I believe he will write more episodes than he did in season 6.

It's already been confirmed that he will write the season premiere; there have been rumors of a backwards-talking episode (stemming from James Marsters's comments about having to visit linguists to learn how to talk backwards) which Joss would presumably write; and finally, Joss has said that the season finale will be the biggest thing they've ever done (mentioned in an article on Scifi Wire), and I imagine if this is true he will want to write it.

Firefly will take a lot of time away from Buffy, and will most likely take away his involvement in the episodes not written by him. Joss has, however, plotted the entire season 7 story... so the plot is still all his doing.

He'll spend proably more time on Buffy if it is the last season, he'll spend some more time at the end of the season. He confirmed he's writing the finale, and if the backwardz ep happens, he'll write that, so prob three. Firefly he's worked on that all throughout S6, and will just be plotting out S2 if its a hit, so more time he'll have on Buffy.

Uh, is the tag the same as the signature?

Thanks for your detailed, informative response. It's good to read he'll be writing more episodes and the backward talking one sounds ace! Obviously I wish him well with Firefly and look forward to seeing it, but it's his BTVS episodes that make thee most impact IMHO.

He's a busy boy for sure!! At least he has some great writers and producers etc on Buffy who produce brilliant work while he's away. The more Joss shows the merrier I say!

HJERMSTED

Lynch & Co. had fun with the backwards talking effect in Twin Peaks during various dream sequences and hallucinations. I also remember the effect was used in Top Secret! (a 1984 Zucker/Abrahams comedy with Val Kilmer).

The actors sound out the words backward (and traverse their scenes backward) while the camera tapes them in its normal forward method. Then, the tape is mastered backwards to get a hurky jerky "forward" movement from the characters and bizarre pronunciations of their lines.

It's a trippy effect. As far as I know, no TV show or movie has done an entire episode in this manner. Could be real hoot or a huge headache. I wouldn't trust this endeavor to anyone other than Joss.

Man what he puts his actors through...

PS: Any Peaks-o-philes out there who can tell us which Twin Peaks episodes used this method specifically?

EUGENEMORROW

In response to the "Twin Peaks" question...I'm not very good with episode names and I haven't seen the whole series in quite a while, but I know "Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer" (the second episode, not counting the pilot), has the first "backwards" effect. I'm also certain the finale, "Beyond Life and Death," does.
I'd have to guess for the others, but I'd say "Cooper's Dream" (5) and "May the Giant be With You" (8, season 2 premiere)probably have some black lodge sequences.
Hope that helps. It's always nice to know Twin Peaks hasn't been forgotten.

ESME

As a Lynch buff (not expert)- I remember the backwards effect was used a lot for the lodge scenes in "Fire Walk with Me", for the characters who lived there on the other plane. I always interpreted it as a dream-logic effect, where the reality seriously twists and you don't know what's a dream and what's not. The benign dialog coupled with the effect is deeply strange.
FWWM is one of my ALLTIME favorite films. Still scares me when he's hiding behind the dresser....
