This doesn't really effect my case, but 20th Century Fox Entertainment has shut down the most accurate Buffy spoiler site on the internet, The Buffy Cross And Stake ( http://www.angelicslayer.com ).

To date, AngelX, the site's webmistress, has contributed some of the most accurate and in depth spoilers on the internet. Hopefully she'll find another venue for her scoops. TBCS will be missed.

This impacts us Firefly fans because FOX apparently seems to be coming down on the spoiler sites. Does this mean that Firefly spoilers will be kept under heavy lock and key? Heavier than Buffy? We'll just have to wait and see...

I'm not much of a spoiler guy myself (in fact, I hate plot spoilers), but I feel bad for the spoiler hounds out there who are being deprived of a very important part of their fandom.

Hmmm...I just looked over their site and couldn't figure out when they were shutdown. It seems as though their gallery was shutdown as well.

I think it's just the episode screen-cap gallery that was shut down... copyright protection and all. So, as long as you don't post (or don't advertise) screen-caps, you probably won't get any complaints from Fox.

I hate studio execs...

Spies? What spies? There are no spies here.

That reminds me, The Official Firefly Site is overdue in releasing something new to the fans. Their previous release dates have been about a week apart.

We're now past the 1.5 week mark and I'm getting withdrawal from the lack of further Pavlovian conditioning from FOX.

The spoilers at TBCS will continue, just not on the spoiler page. Check the spoiler FORUMS from time to time as Fox cannot regulate it.

What I want to know is why FOX goes after fan sites at all. They went after the X-Philers and now they're after us. Isn't the whole point of a fan site to PROMOTE the show they adore? It seems to me, all spoilers do is hype the future episodes. WHY on earth is fox turning down free advertising?! Are they stupid or something?

FOX

Grr. Arg.

Do you even have to ask? This is FOX we're talking about here... the network that puts crap in their primetime slots and good shows in crap slots. The network that runs such drek as "Bachelorettes in Alaska" and "30 Seconds to Fame." Of course they're stupid.

Unfortunatly, if you do not DEFEND your copyright, you lose it. The easiest way to enforce it is to send nastygrams.

Making site owners sign an agreement for value would be better, but then there's always some jerk who will ruin it for everyone else. That's life in the media biz.

You're thinking of trademarks. I've made the same mistake.

It does make some sense to go after people who use copyrighted material without permission. And yes, it also makes sense to give a little slack to people who are giving you free PR. Unfortunately, the people whose job it is to enforce IP issues usually aren't paid enough to worry about such little distinctions -- it's easier to just hassle everybody who might be breaking the rules.

True. Trademark and copyright are convoluted. I've been following the discussion on jerrypournellle.com he's got a "vested interest" in the subject. I think it would make sense to issue limited licenses, but the lawyers wouldn't like it.

Who still remembers when the Shyster Vermin for The Mountain of Garbage forced "The Alien Critic" to become "The Science Fiction Review" all in the name of "protecting" their Alien Trademark.

Knowing JP, "vested interest" means he's pissed off as usual. I used to be a fan, despite (or maybe because of) the fact that I'm on the other side from him on every political issue you can think of. But I got so tired of his selective use of the facts. No, that's too kind. He's lazy. I stopped reading his column in Byte when I realized he was ignorant of facts he could have learned just by browsing in a computer store.

Boy that rant was way offtopic, wasn't it? Sorry.

Well, blaming lawyers for that sort of thing is like blaming cops for silly blue laws, or garbagepeople for the landfill crisis.

We're big on freedom in this country. Economic freedom, personal freedom, general freedom of action. Which is not something I'd care to change. But the precise implementation has some flaws -- the biggest of which is that some rights are expensive to exercise. You have the right to have your day in court, but unless you're very rich or very poor, you can't really afford to exercise this right.

It's tempting to blame people who do strange things like claim total ownership of the word "alien" (or their lawyers) for abusing the system. But face it, when you have market-driven everything, you're supposed to maximize your advantage. You can even get in trouble if you don't -- a publically-held company that isn't obnoxious about its trademarks is gonna get sued by its stockholders.

Hey, I'm back ontopic!

Problem was a FIVE MONTH lead time on his columns. A fact us readers didn't understand many times, when computer hardware was a green grocery business.

The legal staffs of various big corps, look for trouble to justify their grossly excessive salaries. Legal intimidation must be stopped. If it ever happens to me, I intend to go down and swear out a complaint for intimidation and if it's across state lines, I'll go see the FBI. Defending anything now days costs $100,000 and UP. For TMoG (Paramount) shysters are a deductable expense, therefore FREE. You got $100,000 to throw away?

Hey, I'm not talking cutting edge technology. He was saying that he preferred internal modems because he could never remember how to wire RS-232 cables! Yes, there was a time when pre-wired serial cables weren't available for most computers, but it ceased to be true long, long before this column came out.

I've also heard Jerry rant against dynamic linking and multitasking in a way that made it clear he understood neither concept.
