I'm up to episode 6, and I gotta ask: why is Johnathan drifting to the Dark side? Didn't he thank Buffy for being 'Class Protector' at the end of 3?
And is this season shot on different film stock? It looks totally different than previous seasons, kinda grainy and orange-like...

it's possible that it's shot differently as season 6 was when the show moved to UPN.

As for Jonathon, he's lonely, he'll do whatever he can to get some attention, as we saw in Earshot and Superstar. So he decided to join Warren's little take over the world gang, just to have a place to fit in, as well as feel useful.

"Haha, mine is an evil laugh."

Unfortunately, Jonathan never really learned his lesson from "Earshot" or "Superstar." He looks for quick fixes to his problems instead of working hard to solve them the right way. Hanging out with Andrew and Warren is just another quick fix--it sounds like a good idea because he gets automatic friends and the sense that he's needed since he can do bits of magic. I can't say much more without spoiling the season, but hopefully that made sense...

Chrisall,

I ordered those DVDs you suggested, and they just came in...all $300 worth of season episodes. I have not watched them yet, because I've been sitting here for 3 hours staring at them for no particular reason. Also, I got to thinking...was it Dark Angel that I was suppose to order or Angel? Because Angel is what showed up. A whole bunch of boxed DVDs.

Well, I was meaning Dark Angel, but Angel is entertaining as well, just not as good as DA IMHO.
Pop 'em in if you like demon-killin' action, but get Dark Angel too, I think you might be able to relate to Max (the main character).
How's things at the moment? Any meditating?
And, on topic, have you seen Buffy? It's really good too.

as far as the different look...it could be that this was the year that the show switched from The WB to UPN (although why that would make it look grainy, I'm not sure... it IS why they got away with more stuff than they used to)

As far as Jonathan goes...the producers (ie Joss) wanted to use the geeks we had met before. And Jonathan had a lot of mojo in order to pull off the Super star stunt... I thought it wasn't a huge departure for his character (following his friends' lead). And I love to see Danny Strong (who plays Jonathan) on my TV screen!

Dawn does continue to annoy quite a bit in S6, but it is easier to accept her... particularly as one of the burdens that keep Buffy in the world.

sooooo have you seen the musical yet? I LOVE the musical! (well, of course, everyone does)

Yeah, I saw OMWF last night, and it was sort of okay, nothing special, and the songs were sorta weak...

I LIE!!! IT WAS AWSOME!!!
It was everything all the stories I read said it was! I got shivers up my spine from most of it- it was so surreal and tremendously funny AND touching...That was Joss at his FINEST- on par with the best of Firefly! Every little look and gesture, dance move and everything. I don't have the time right now to go into all that I loved about it.
Tablu Rasa was also excellent, and Smashed blew me away at the end!!!!!!!!!

More later.....

LOL
that is the thing...
people complain about season 6 being depressing and not as much fun as earlier seasons of Buffy, and that Buffy herself is so depressed and it is such a downer....
but there are some incredible things in S6, some are harsh, but the writers were going to some interesting places here....

of course the musical is the BEST!

particularly when you consider that Joss had to write each song, no only to further the plot of the this episode AND the season's story arc,
but also to suit the range of that actor's singing ability (Alyson/Willow's being a very limited range indeed...)
it is an amazing achievement, and one I can't see that they could have ever done on 'Firefly'

It may well be a good 'uh-oh' as far as you're concerned. The end of Smashed was basically the moment I gave up on ever seeing another good Buffy episode...

Ohhhhh. Yeah, I could see why you'd say that. It would've provoked the same reaction in me a year ago (The ep where Reilly left was like that for me, it pissed me off so much that I couldn't wait for the season to run out so I could sell it).
I'm more, I don't know, DESPERATE for Joss-y stuff now, and want to see Nathan's shot in S7- I'm relaxed about the whole thing, and am just going with the flow.
Season 2, 3 and 4 are still the best, though.

Quite right - you're not going into this unprepared/completely unspoiled, so I guess it's not going to have the same effect on you as it might have if you'd seen it first run.

Definitly.
Also, I'm glad I spaced Buffy out the way I did, if I had just got the whole series all at once, it would have been too much to absorb all in three months of viewing. It took me over a year to get this far.

I went into S6 completely unprepared and unspoiled, and that didn't hurt my appreciation of it all. Was I shocked? Yeah. Was it OOC? No way. Was I completely enthralled by what was going to happen next? You bet!

And S4 > S5? No way. :p

Up to Gone now; Johnathan better be careful, or he'll wind up in jail...

Surprised to find tears in my eyes at the end of Smashed. Two characters, desperately needing something, hoping they find it in eachother, and in the moment they do- but it's so wrong. Destroying the house as they shagged was a powerful metaphor.

Am I making you want to re-visit your assessment of the last two seasons?
You know, see if they're less deplorable than you remembered?

I actually rewatched 75% of S6 recently after having a forum chat about it and not being able to directly cite specific scenes/lines and so on. On rewatching I discovered that I enjoyed the eps up to and including Tabula Rasa slightly more on average than I had first run, while those that followed I came to despise even more. I have yet to risk rewatching S7, not least because the dvds cost a pretty penny... ;)

THESOMNAMBULIST

Hey Big C

So season six eh? Wow you must feel like part of the old school now :D

Well it's a different animal season six as I'm sure you're noticing.

It wasn't my favourite season for various reasons but mainly, for me, because that 'Jossness' is missing.
It's a silly thing but this really smacked of a season where the 'other' contributors are having more say and while they do a respectable job at keeping the show going, the entertainment element is gone. The contrived nature of many of the plot lines show through, and Jonothan is one of them. As you mention, the 'character shifts' are extreme and tend to feel forced.... At least for me personally anyway.

That said it has it's moments of genuine wonderment - but having only watched this season once kinda sums up the overall effect for me.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Yep. Always knew I'd make it.
Different is ONE way of putting it!
But the whole season was worth it if only for OMWF, that was awsome.

Chris:

So how far have you gotten on Season 6 now? Just so I don't spoil anything by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time...

I know, you've probably already heard it all before, but knowing some of the stuff that's coming still can't quite prepare you for seeing it happen. There are moments in S6 that STILL leave me shaken, even after repeated viewings.

And the Crack-Whore Willow arc, while it IS such an obvious metaphor, certainly does have its purpose later on.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Buffy S6 and S7 might not be the best Buffy seasons of all, but they're still pretty damned good. And I can find something to like in every single episode of the show, from S1 through the final episode of S7.
