(Looked around a bit but didn't find this posted here. If it is and I missed it, oh well.)

Joss to write "season 8" of Buffy for Dark Horse comics....

Whedon Pens New Buffy Comic
From Dark Horse in October
May 23, 2006

Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon is writing a new six-issue Buffy mini-series for Dark Horse Comics. The first volume is due out in October. A Dark Horse spokesperson has confirmed to ICv2 that the new series chronicles events that happened to Buffy and her friends after the conclusion of their televised adventures and will function as a "Season 8" to the highly popular cult hit TV series that ran for seven seasons (see "Buffy Returns").

Even though the WB aired the final episode of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series three years ago (May 20th, 2003), reruns have extended the life of the popular property, which still supports a wide array of tie-in products including action figures from Diamond Select Toys, trading cards from Inkworks(a new series is due in August), and Cine-Manga from Tokyopop (see "Tokyopop's 'Buffy' Cine-Manga").

Hiya, E!

Nice to see-ish you, too. I'm always around; I'm just a professional-grade lurker.

I recognize that photo in your sig! What a great day, eh?

Joss comics are always a good thing. If you haven't read his Astonishin X-Men run, I highly recommend it. Chock-full of Jossy goodness.

Well, you could buy them and purposely not read them. Then on top of that, you can fold them and crinkle the pages and completely neglect to bag-n-board them. (That should make comic book fanboys cringe)

oh yes, I love Joss' Astonishing X-men (I just wish he had written the script for the movie that opens today... although, come to think of it, they did lift a lot of the script from those very same Astonishing X-men comics he wrote...).

I own all the comics Joss has written himself,
when we met at Wizard World I got autographs on Tales of the Slayer and Astonishing X-men vol. 1

And unlike Chrisisall I DO have them in bags with boards....

(Iie... For the record - such as it is - Jossy isn't the first X-Author to address the "mutant cure." It's been done many times throughout the ages, so one could - if one cared - claim that the new movie lifts a lot of stuff from all those other authors. JW just did it the bestest. )

So how about that Buffy season 8 thing, huh? (feeble attempt to get away from thread drifties)

Oh I am totally excited about Buffy Season 8!
the only downside is the problems with ordering them;
Dark Horse will not sell directly and will recommend TFAW but they are NOT reliable.

I recommend that people tell their local store that they want these comics, and put in a 'pull' order (so they get them set aside for them when they arrive)

If you don't have a local comic books store then either at 258 West Authentic:
https://258west.com/index.php
or midtown comics in Manahattan (they mail to anyplace):
http://www.midtowncomics.com/

Joss wouldn't be doing these if he didn't have some stories he is dying to tell... so you know it'll be great!

Joss wasn't the first one to do the cure, but the movie did use HIS cure story specifically; they're using one of his original characters, Kavita Rao.

Yep.

JOSS: Well, there’s probably more of me in the third than the first, since they’re using my ‘cure’ scenario as a jumping off point (to be clear, I know many people have done cure scenarios before me – X-Statix did one that came out just months before – but I didn’t know that when I wrote mine. So my wildly unoriginal idea was, in fact, mine. Avi told me they were using it (and the character of Kavita Rao) for the movie, possibly because of the more modern genetic forum, possibly because they didn’t read the other ones either.

and probably worth a small fortune now, huh?

I'll bet your family is enjoying the Buffy & Angel tapes more than they were allowed to enjoy the classic comics collection (because I'm assuming you really did have them sealed in protective covers... I was just continuing Hell'sKitten's joke about abusing of comic books)

I've been rewatching old Buffy's and I am really up for a continuation of the story!

My son's too young, and my wife won't watch anything w/demons or vampires, they give her the creepy nightmares!!!!

Only one of my friends has even casually watched Buffy on broadcast TV!!!

(and that particular comic has seen better days, prolly only worth $10 or so...)

I had a friend who was afraid to watch them too...
but really they are pretty cheesy monsters (particularly that first season)
and the metaphor is the real story...
at any rate my friend only ended up finding Hush to be scary, and even that didn't give her any nightmares....

but I know how it goes...it is hard to change someone's mind when it is made up.
Luckily the shows hold up, so you know your son can enjoy them later...

I'm glad you lurk.

Having six official-like covers by you would be great. (I adore your artwork; where adore means to admire and to be jealous of all at once.) I understand you've worked in the bi'ness before, but if you need some guidance, as it were, let me know.

Cheers.

Maybe somebody already mentioned this, but didn't Buffy's series finale air on UPN, and not the WB, as stated in this article? Somebody needs to do some fact checking.

...and yes, I did enjoy Joss' "cure" storyline in 'Astonishing.' Actually, I've enjoyed his whole run thus far. Still, I think 'Buffy' had a fine sendoff, but "Serenity" wasn't enough for me...I want more 'Firefly,' dammit!

Joss, you're a brilliant writer, to be sure...just gimme more 'Firefly' stuff, dammit. DAMMIT!!!

Eh? As far as I know, the potential for more Firefly or Serenity comics is just that - potential. I don't know that anything's been even seriously discussed, much less set in stone.

Evidently, from what I understood in an interview w/Joss (which of course I can't find at the moment) he and Brett Matthews have worked out a story already and Dark Horse does (naturally) want to do it... so they need to line up an artist and start getting it done....
obviously that doesn't happen over night, but I expect to hear that the first issue is coming out some time this Summer.
Maybe I'm being too optimistic...
but of course I have to be ready to jump on it since they ran out at so many comic book stores last time (I did manage to get all 9 covers because I'm a freak)

Of course this thread is supposed to be all about BUFFY's canon series Season 8, and I'm very excited about it too (but I don't think the competition for the issues will be quite as bad...).

Heehee, yes, optimistic. My meager, amateur understanding of comicy things tells me a summer release for something that's been "worked out" is way optimistic. But, hey, what do I know.... Hope away! Comics are a girl's best friend.

Yea! Season 8! Joss can start off the 1st issue by shooting Kennedy in the head.

Or maybe turning her into a vamp.

Anything to get her out of the story and stop polluting Willow's internal character conflicts.

Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony.

Whedonesque posted a wonderful new intereview:
http://www.wizarduniverse.com/magazine/wizard/000495675.cfm?page=2
where Joss does say something about the Buffy comic

Quote:

BENDIS: [Laughs] Oh, speaking of, I saw on the board tonight they announced the new Buffy comic. You’re gonna write a new Buffy comic?

WHEDON: I am, in fact. This was originally a concept that was designed to tie in to some Buffy movies that are probably not going to happen. So now the comic is out there twisting in the wind by itself. But I have this arc; this concept of what I refer to as “Season 8” of “Buffy,” which is the “What happens next?” Although it’s very much more comic book in scale and style and time frame. Everyone’s like, “What week will it pick up during?” And I’m like, “It’s not quite like that.”

What I’m doing is working with George Jeanty. He’s gonna be drawing the first four, which I’m writing. And Jo Chen’s gonna do the covers. I’m a huge fan of hers. I have this arc laid out which I’m sort of writing up as where I want the series to go and then I’m gonna be bringing in anybody from the camp or any of our friends who have the time to do arcs within that. Just sort of servicing certain beats and then going off on their own. Because at this point, it’s sort of fair game. There are certain characters I’ve been saving because I thought I might make movies about them, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

BENDIS: Why isn’t that going to happen?

WHEDON: I think money is standing in the way. What is ever in the way? What ever makes anything happen or not happen?

I hope it is set after Ats S5...
but actually I don't care:
I'm sure Joss has a serious arc worked out because evidently it will be 20 issues long and will have some of those issues written by some of our favorite BtVS writers (Joss will write most of them himself)

Wow. The cover art is incredible, probably the best drawing of Buffy I have seen. There is just something about her that ususally doesn't come through in drawings...

I am excited about Buffy Comic Season 8. Really, if you can't have a new TV season, then comics are the next best alternative. I love books, but they rarely work for TB shows. They are just too different, too internal, to ever really work. Comics, while you have still lost the preformance aspect, have a strong visual element. The drawings can speak. It's all quite cool.
