Just watched it again last night, for only the second time, now. Forgot how kickin' that fight with Spike was! Definitly one of the best on Buffy. Anne had better all around action, as did the whole James Bond-like commando raid at the Initiative at season 4's end, but straight up hand to hand- it was almost as good (tho shorter) as Spike vs. Angel in Destiny.
Well...close, anyway..

Let me guess...this is a season episode I havent seen right? Why oh why do you want to rush us through all the seasons of Buffy? Do you eat this way too? Do you just gulp down your meals without tasting it? Hello Mr Man! Some of us want to chew and think about the episodes before we move on to the next one.

You need to be slapped.

Now yer talkin'! That's in line with this threads' topic.

You slap me and I reply with a double leg lock and forward takedown, what's your next move?

BTW, it's season 4, you saw it Chrisisall

Actually, I'm a bigger fan of the fights in Season 7 - though I don't really remember the one in Harsh Light of Day. My personal favorites are the opening fight of 7.01 Lessons, where Buffy is showing Dawn how to fight, 7.17 Lies My Parents Told Me between Spike and Robin Wood, and 7.20 Touched, the "lay a hand on me" dodge-fest between Caleb and Buffy.

Though I do like the season 4 big fight - seems like they got a big increase in budget from the previous year (oooh, such a bad big snake. Arg!)

Oh, and it's great to see such a Spike fan. Query: do you think Spike is Buffy's equal in a fight? There are a lot of arguments both ways, but I don't really know.

Both Spike AND Buffy are so subject to their moods...I think at the top of their game, Buffy would beat Spike because she's good at 'dropping away' and letting herself fight without the self to judge and edit movement- she's just very 'Bruce Lee' about it, whereas Spike, for all his decades of experience, relies on a 'Rocky' style 'never give up' attitude, that fails when bones get broken.
Just mho.

Hmmm, but the whole "both at the top of their game" seems rather impossible. At the top of his game, Spike can unsettle Buffy, thus making her not at the top of her game. So both of them peaking simultaneously would never happen. But then, I have to confess a sneaking desire for them to be equal. But then I remember that Angel says Buffy's stronger than he is, and Angel beats Spike every time but the last time (which means what? Not sure). Oh, well, I'll just Spuffy on, in my blissful ignorance, dreaming of Spike and Buffy fighting and shagging and never being friends...

...while Riley is off in his own little world, preferably one with four pink walls and a straightjacket. ;-) - just yanking the Riley/Buffy chain.

In their first fight, Spike actually beats Buffy and she is rescued by Joyce: "Get the hell away from my daughter." However, as time goes by the advantage shifts to Buffy. I attribute this to her learning the flaws in his fighting style and her own growth as a fighter (fighting monsters to the death on a practically nightly basis).

NOTHING can ever beat the brawl in "Desinty", but "Harsh Light of Day" was certenly a good one. Every one knows Spike's thing is hand to hand. [Nothin' but fist and fangs]. Take for example "Fool for Love" and "Lover's Walk".

Two of my other all-time favourite eps...

Angel's Destiny was king of the hill, fight-wise.
But HLOD had one of the best ever in Buffy IMO.

Don't forget some of the fights with Angel and Connor, or Angel and Hamilton in "Not Fade Away". And in the bigger scale battles, "Chosen" "The Gift" and that one in Ats 4, where the gang is hiding in the sewers from Jasmine's minions and Connor... 'Member that?

Haven't seen Angel 3 & 4 yet, but for big battles, Chosen is the one for me.

Don't temp me. I know practicaly all there is to know about Buffy and Angel, sans everything about the actors. If I really put my head to it I might be able to tell you everything that happens step by step... Like I said, I'm a geek. :)

Here's one, we the viewers all saw it coming, but at what point precisely did Spike himself realize he loved, not just liked or lusted after, Buffy?

That's still up in the air, but it could either be during the Thy Will Be Done spell, or his dream when she come to kill him and kisses her and actualy says "I love you". He most likly started lusting after her becuase of Faith and the body swap incedent.

Are we talking about Buffy the show, or Buffy the character?

For the show, I don't think anything tops Spike's two little throwdowns in "Fool for Love".

For Buffy personally, come on, this is easy: against Faith, at the end of "Graduation Day, Part 1".

It's funny: I just watched HLOD again for about the millionth time, and that fight just didn't jump out at me as anything special. Different strokes, huh? In fact, if anything, I probably dislike that fight, because it's one of the times where Buffy's stunt double is really obvious as being someone other than SMG. Most action scenes are shot in such a way that they at least do a decent job hiding it, but not this one.

Okay. you're likely right on both counts, it's just that HLOD's tiff was so fast and brutal- I loved the footwork, and doubles stopped bothering me in season 2, heh heh.

YES YES YES, that is my favourite fight ever... ever. aw chrisisall, were you unwed I would take you in a manly fashion

when I first watched that (taped off tv) I had to rewind it 3 times and watch it through again, but most people I've mentioned it to didn't think it was anything special. I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's seeing spike in the sunlight, maybe it's the tongue-between-the-teeth leer, or when he jumps off the steps and roundhouses[?] her... it's just brilliant... and great dialogue too "squirrels makin' lots of nasty little sqirrels" "what exactly did it take to pry apart the slayer's dimpled knees?", and the stuff about angel.

I found a lot of the later fight scenes quite dull, but that ones still so fresh and snappy although fool for love was very good with the switching between past and present, those fights were very well done too.

Being a fight afficianado, I have to say the fights on Buffy were for the most part very good, but every once in a while I woud sit up and go "WHOAH!!!"
HLOD was one of those times. Anne's final battle was another. And Chosen.
JM is mostly excellent in the fight dept.

Way I remember it, the fights were much better in the first four years of Buffy. My fuzzy memory (I keep my good memory in a jar for special occasions) says that the stunt choreographer was a lady (SMG's stunt double ??) that left somewhere around season five. Can anyone verify this? Anyway, I thought she did a much better job than her replacement, and the fights took a dive after that point.

As to ranking, definitely Buffy > Angel > Spike. But as Spike said, "All it takes is one good day..."

ETA: The fight that stands out in my mind is the one in season four where Buffy's fighting the initiative goons in the dorm hallway. Doesn't a chair get thrown from between her legs?!

spike's at his best when he's doing the overconfident cocky thing. like in season 7 get it done when he's goes to get his coat and bring the demon in for the trade, he's staggering around and sneering and for me that harks back to this fight in THLOD which was probably the last time he got to be 'bad boy' spike. and that's where his 'one good day' thing thing comes in, he may not have the technical skill of buffy or angel but when he's having fun, he's better.

I didn't know that about the choreographer changing, but it doesn't surprise me, the early ones used to make me want to prance around punching the air, but towards the end it was just like 'yawn, another fight' waiting for them to get back to the story again... that could just be me getting old though

another good one I remembered is the first time buffy and faith fight, in revelations, seeing 2 slayers going at it full tilt for the first time was pretty spectacular.

They definitly changed in pace and style- actually got more interesting for me as then I no longer knew exactly what to expect... but I don't know if they were markedly worse...and the battle in Chosen and the fight in LMPTM were great.
I'll give ya an analysis soon, I'm going through the last 2 seasons presently.
