So, I'm just sitting around with the TV. Pretty much nothing on, so I end up watching My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988). And as I'm watching, what do I see but a young Alyson Hannigan. After a while, I think wait a minute. Is that an young Seth Green? I check out the imdb and sure enough it is! Gotta say, it's wild to see them so young! And they went on a date!

Looks like the Willow/Oz relationship was destined long before any of us thought

America loves a winner!

Ha! I forgot all about Seth being in that!! But I will always remember how different that young girl was in that goofy movie. To be honest, I couldn't understand why she was even in the movie to begin with. Sure, she's cute enough, but it was the way she delivered her lines which seemed so different, so unique. It's hard to explain, but she talked kinda slow, and pronounced every word almost as if she was reading the lines for the first time while the scene was being filmed. ( Which is silly, I know ) I always thought.." why'd they pick her for this role again ? ". No lie, I wondered if her parents weren't good friends w/ Dan Akroyd, or that someone was owed a big debt, and so to even things out, she got the part. Man, that sounds brutal, and I honestly don't mean to sound like that, but her performance always stuck with me. And the funny part, it was after watching at LEAST 3 or 4 seaons of Buffy and after seeing American Pie that it hit me!!! Willow is that girl from My Stepmother Is an Alien!! I've been a 'fan' of hers for far longer than I even knew! And now she's so incredible on 'How I Met Your Mother'...*sigh* Way to go Alyson!

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

It's weird. Sarah Michelle Gellar has always been considered the biggest star to emerge from any of Joss' shows. But personally, I always found that Allyson Hannigan has had a more prolific, if not respectable career. I mean, if you mention Allyson's name to different people, you get three different responses. You either get "Willow", "the flute chick from AMERICAN PIE" or "the chick from HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER". She's not typecast. And even though she's not some indie darling or doing a Hollywood movie every hiatus, she's almost a character actor and go from one thing to the next with ease.

SMG on the other hand is slumming it in either bad horror movies or doing voice over work for bad CGI cartoons (it's kinda sad to see her voice a third generation clone of her most famous role in TMNT). That being said, I'm interested in seeing her in SOUTHLAND TALES and how that would impact her career.

Hey, there's no better way to change your image as the ultimate girl-power warrior that playing a character who whores herself figuratively and literally. She's this porn star enterprenuer psychic (I think).

I like both Aly and Sarah and will watch most stuff they are in but I have to say that Aly has made the better choices as far as career goes. Sarah may have had the bigger budget movies but it hasn't really got her anywhere. She's still referred to primarily as the actress who played Buffy.

Aly on the other hand played a killer move with American Pie and got the best joke in the whole film (amongst a lot of funny jokes). Multiple flute and band camp jokes on their way! Even just sticking to BTVS I'd say that Aly is the better actress (not that Sarah is bad).

I too remember Aly from her younger days, although mine was a true story movie called Switched At Birth. She played a minor role as the other 'switched' kid. Ariana Richards (of Jurassic Park) played the main kid. But when BTVS started showing she was the only one I'd seen elsewhere (not counting Tony Head in a Gold Blend advert, but I only found that out later). Couldn't remember where it was from though and then when I rewatched the movie, there she was.

I had never seen the coffee commercial everyone talks about with Tony Head, but aside from BUFFY, I keep thinking of him as the Prime Minister in LITTLE BRITAIN (his sketches are the funniest ones, just to see him play it completely straight against Sebastians come-ons) and his guest stint on DOCTOR WHO. To me, he's not only just Giles. Same with Seth Green and Aly. They've done other really good stuff, so I don't think of them too much as their BUFFY counterparts.

Everyone else in the cast, on the other hand, I always think of as their BUFFY characters, so maybe in regards to career versatility, those three have had the biggest successes, with Michelle Tractenberg (?) being another slight example. Even if you've seen her in MYSTERIOUS SKIN, there's still a part of you that recalls Dawnie as you're watching her as this girl who does tricks in a small town and whose best friend is this gay hustler.

And if any of you actually want to see it, you'd better have a really strong stomach for pedophilia.

I knew Alyson was in it long before BUFFY ever was a thought in Joss's mind. I found out about Seth Green being in it too from The Watcher's Guide Volume 1, I think. I'd seen him in a bunch of things before, but didn't remember him being in that movie with her.

I don't usually believe in these sorts of things, but there are far more connections between cast members/crew members that are too bizarre to be simple coincidence.

One of my favorites things I found out about is that Gail Berman (who was the casting director on BUFFY) once casted a Burger King commercial that featured SMG and Seth Green both. Neither of them remembered it, but she did. I even saw the commercial, but I don't remember where.

Well I believe SMG and Michelle were in All My Children at the same time before Buffy. I remember a rumour that SMG helped MT get the role of Dawn??

Tony Head's coffee commercial (Nescafe Gold Blend in the UK and Tasters Choice in the US) was the first long running 'soap' advert. It started (I think) with him knocking on a door and saying that he's just moved in but has no coffee. The woman then produces Gold Blend and he is smitten. Every so often they changed the advert and moved the story on a bit as their relationship developed, complete with all the neccessary romantic obstacles.
It became so big they would actually announce when the new one would be shown and it pulled in massive veiwers each time. People were hooked.

Not bad for an advert.

Oh my God I REMEMBER those commercials. That guy was the one who played Giles? I am astonished. I followed those commercials as religously as most people followed a Soap, they were so well done, and I kept waiting for THE BIG MOMENT. I just fell in love with that man.

In fact they did a spoof about it on Coach. Coach's news reporter girlfriend was in a series of coffee adds (the male character was the lead male in Fran Dresher's show I think) and the Coach was jealous believing there was real chemistry, the girlfriend thought he was silly, and the male actor himself believed they were falling in love. What kind of a geek am I knowing that?

Now I need to see those commercials again. It was it's own mini series, and all for a coffee brand. WOW, what a memory stroll.

Thanks for making me remember that amazing moment in tv history Iwaves.

Btw, they did eventually do it.... tastefully of course, and had a good cup of coffee in the morning.

Guess what brand of coffee I'm drinking right now?

Yeah, I remember those commercials, too. Loved them to the point of wondering if I could accept him in the role of Buffy's Watcher and not see those commercials every time he was onscreen. Thankfully, there was no need to be worried. He's Giles--end of story!

I was actually watching AMC when SMG and Michelle Trachtenberg were on. I think the "official" story on how Michelle got hired was that she just happened to be visiting SMG that day (Michelle was also a huge BUFFY fan) when they "just happened" to be casting for Dawn and she ended up auditioning for it. Considering they were looking for a younger actress which was evident in how Dawn was written most of the time, you can probably guess how much I believe that one.

That was great rewatching them. Tony seemed so much like Hugh Grant.

Thanks
