Agreed. The first half of season two wasn't as consistent, but the second half was more than enough to make up for it. On the other hand, season three had great episodes throughout (though it's still not as jaw-dropping as season two, in my mind).

Well, for me, 5 had three absolutely stunning episodes (The Body, Fool for Love, the Gift), but the rest felt a little lacking. Like in the episode where he splits into two halves? The "weak" half or whatever was basically regular Xander at that point. I don't think they really fixed that until the season 6 finale, which I absolutely adored.

However, I'm willing to forgive all that because of Giles in the wizard's hat.

That was a jem no doubt. I don't know if you've noticed but next to Joss, Drew Goddard is the next best comedy writer.... Well he and Jane Espenson are equal I guess. He frequently writes the funnier episodes, even now he writes for Lost, his stuff is always funny. And that's tough with Lost, it's not exactly trying for the humour so he does very well to have any in at all.

Kind of hard. I don’t know if I could state absolutely what order I would go with, but this sounds good me. But I would hasten to add that I don’t think that the season order is equidistant. I think 3 and 4 and 5 are pretty close together. And 1 and 2 are pretty close together. 6 and 7 are probably close together, but they are both so far away that the rest look like a point source from them.

3,4,5,1,2,6,7

A caveat is that I never actually watched all of season 7. Season 6 killed the magic for me.

That's weird, 'cause that's initially how I felt about 5! At the end of seeing it, I cursed Joss, dried the tears squeezed out of me from The Body, and sold the season to a used CD/DVD place- it irked me that much.
But lack O' Buffy soon forced me to get the Chosen Collection, and continue my journey, and after season five, I found six to be fascinating. It may be that I had some similar RL experiences- there was a couple of years a while back (like two decades!!!

) where I was utterly heartbroken, and 'going through the motions', as Buffy said. Funny how when you have no need for sex, the possibility seems to present itself over and over again. Like Buffy, those moments were the only time I felt even half-alive again, carnal urges brought to the surface and such.
So season six is totally okay with me, and seven is GREAT, IMO, 'cause she comes totally out of that, and finally takes charge of her destiny!

But I understand how peeps milage may vary.

Season 5 was devoid of the playful innocence in season 1. It was about a mature Buffy, who was on her own and struggling to keep her family together. Fighting for her sister, fraught with the loss of her mother and facing overwhelming odds that ultimately culminated in an act of bravery and selflessness that only a true heroine would accept. It was the logical progression, in the Buffy’s coming of age. We always knew she would have to die. The tragic death of a Slayer was a constraint that was applied to the storyline right from the beginning. Season five was where it should have ended and season six just sort of rambled around with no real direction. As far as I’m concerned there are only five seasons of Buffy. The last two are just writers and tv execs milking the genre, which is fine; they have to bring home the bacon like everyone else.

That’s not to say there weren’t some good episodes and some excellent writing in Season 6 and 7. There were, but it just didn’t fit into the story.

I SO totally disagree with you, Finn. Seasons six, and even seven, did meander a bit, but they were about an adult Buffy & co. re-defining themselves, discovering who they were in the world. The metaphore of Buffy coming back from the dead was a thinly veiled 'going out in the world' after the protection of parents and school, IMO.
And I so totally loved Buffy changing the rules from those that MEN devised so long ago! To me, it was the perfect cap on the saga!!!

There was a time when I would have said that for me it ends with season four- boy am I glad I went all the way.
But I do see your point, and it is a perfectly valid one, if you like those all-or-nothing endings. I just love the last frame of the last ep too much to trade it for more a more realistic (whatever that means in the Buffy'verse) ending.

I wouldn't call the first half of season two inconsistent, assuming you're saying in terms of quality. A lot of people seem to like season two mainly for the second half and believe the first to be inferior. The 'monster of the week'episodes ('Reptile Boy', 'Go Fish' etc) seem to be considered as what makes the season qualitatively inconsistent, but I don't think so. To me, this creates more variety. These episodes are still clever, especially when compared to the lesser episodes of other seasons.

Also, I didn't like particuarly like season five, because it was the season that was least Buffy-ish, not season six, or even season seven. It was probably because of the different, sort of blander tone and the fact that the dialogue was plainer and not as witty.

I think the first half of season two suffered not from a lack of good ideas--I think the monsters-of-the-week were at the very least entertaining--but a lack of emotion. They were witty, and fun to watch, and at times really cool, but the second half is when Buffy really started to pull me in emotionally, and when it got me reacting to episodes with something deeper than just, "That was pretty cool." When was Lie to Me? I think that was the first episode of the second season to hit me.
