1) Don't know how we could really know this. She is Buffy. She defined the role IMO. So, I guess she's the best possible.

2) No. I think she phoned it in sometimes.

3) I'd say the episode that she kills Angel was the best. It's not one moment but she has to run the emotional gambit in that episode. Plus sword fighting.

4) Yes. Her hottness was the reason I started watching the show back in the first season. She was not the hottest. Alyson Hannigan outshines her by the end.

5) No.

edit: bah only one 'l' in Alyson

1) Was she the best Buffy that could be? Could another actress have done it better? Yeah she IS Buffy to my mind. I'd seen the film and as much as I liked Kirsty Swanson, I think Sarah Michelle Gellar defined the character.

2} Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance? Yeah I think she nailed it every week. She strikes me as a very professional actress.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise? The Body.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show? Not to my mind - I don't really go for Blondes. I didn't particularly find the regulars hot, but I had a soft spot for Jenny Calendar

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them? Nossir! I did watch a little of the sequel becuase I found it funny that OZ (Seth Green) was in it with her. I was looking out for the ironic nod to Buffy - but gave up waiting after ten minutes.

1) Was she the best Buffy that could be? Could another actress have done it better?
She was the only Buffy. Watching Kristy Swanson is like watching a cheap high school production of a broadway show.

2} Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance?
Yeah, I think she was always there. At a certain point her wide eyed devasted look and the flailing arms of frustration got a little tired, but that doesn't mean SMG was phoning it in. Real people don't have different reactions for every single emotion. After a certain amount of time, a facial expression or movement IS part of the character and we should see it in the right circumstances.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise?
Hrmmm...I personally loved her in I Will Remember You, but that wasn't a Buffy ep. She broke my heart in the end. I loved SMG as the Buffybot. Killing Angel was an amazing moment. There were a ton...it's hard to pick a best.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show?
She's gorgeous...but the other women weren't given much of a chance to shine. Aly is stunning, but as Willow her style was 'blah'. Emma Caufield is also very pretty and was allowed to be a bit glamorous as Anya, but never outshone SMG.

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them?

The first one...but more for Freddie Prinze, Jr.

First off I've just started the 4th season (I've been meaning to start watching again but it hasn't happened) but I can answer some of these.

1) Was she the best Buffy that could be? Could another actress have done it better?

To answer that I'd have to see every episode done by every other actress. I can guess and my guess is that any other actress wouldn't have become the iconic figure that SMG\Buffy is.

2} Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance?

So far I think that she's usually been good, there have been subpar moments but everyone has them and it's not necessarily the fault of the actor, could be writing or directing.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise?

Haven't seen all the episodes but so far I'd say when she killed Angel.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show?

Hot yes, hottest I'm not sure, I suspect that Alyson will end up hotter like a previous poster said. One a side note, anyone else not find Eliza Dushku very hot?

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them?

Absolutely not.

Maybe. I don’t know. It depends a lot on what you mean by “better.” I think a lot of actresses could have acted circles around her, but that doesn’t mean she was bad or that there weren’t times that she shined as good or better then anyone. I think she did a great job with the role.

The show phoned itself in sometimes, so it’s hard to say. But no actress in a TV series is ever 100% all the time, especially a low-budget show. I think she was a lot more consistent then most actresses.

She was cute, but she got less cute in the later seasons. I think she lost a lot of weight and made her look gaunt and unhealthy.

1) If you had asked me this question three years ago, I would have said she is the ONLY Buffy. Have to say I'm not sure someone else couldn't've done it better. Maybe not better, but just as good. That would be Kristen Bell. Rent or buy VERONICA MARS, Season 1. She's petite, blonde, uber-talented (damn good actress, pretty singing voice, too), and doesn't have an overblown ego (meaning, she's willing to do a big screen movie of her cancelled tv series because she loves the character and almost worships the talents of the show's creator like we do Joss--and unlike SMG, I don't think she's B.S.-ing.)

2) Honestly, there were probably occasionally some eps. or scenes I felt that, but because of my sometimes overblown frustration with SMG, I wasn't the most objective I could've been. Probably am still not. I would consider her to be the best actress on the show. (Emma Caulfield best supporting, by the way)

3)The Body, probably. But the first one that really got me was the "I'm 16 years old...I don't want to die" speech KILLED me.

4) I could care less who was hottest.

5) I did that for the first one, decided against making that mistake for the second one. I caught some of it on cable though. I wouldn't pay to see any movie just because of her again for personal reasons.

Not an SMG fan. She LOOKED like Buffy. I'm not sure she WAS Buffy.

2} Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance?
There was phoning in by everyone at one time or another.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise?
Dunno. The Body, I guess.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show?
No. I agree that she looked better with meat on her bones.

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them?
No. I did partially watch them on TV. I enjoyed Linda and Matthew more than SMG or Freddie.

You know...as much as I love Buffy...I can completely understand SMG's reluctance to reprise her role as Buffy. She was very young when she started Buffy, it's what she's known for and she is STRUGGLING to break out of the type cast mold.

Kristen Bell was only Veronica Mars for 3 years (? - I never watched) and she or the show hasn't gained nearly the notice that SMG or BtVS did. If BtVS ended after season three you may very well see SMG willing to do a big screen version of Buffy. As is, I think she is being very smart and really trying to break free of that role.

1) Was she the best Buffy that could be? Could another actress have done it better?

Asking that is like asking if anyone else aside from Jim Gandolfini could play Tony Soprano. Maybe someone else could have played the part, but she made it her own so much that you can't imagine anyone else playing her.

2} Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance?

Maybe she did near the end, but I personally never noticed.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise?

"Forever" Especially the last scene with her and Dawn. Just how she delivers the line "Of..Course...I..Care!" just sends shivers through my entire body.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show? Meh, not really. I wouldn't exactly describe any of the actresses hot. Attractive, yes. But not something for the spank bank.

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them?

No. Never will. When I hear about the live action SCOOBY DOO's, I think of two quotes.

"The only mystery here is why we keep taking our cues from a dick in a neckerchief.";"Keep it up, beatnik. I'll feed you to the fucking dog."

"What kind of performance do you call that? You made me sound like a total space cadet, man!!"

I'm still waiting for SOUTHLAND TALES to come out so I can see her as a porn star entrepreneur.

1) Was she the best Buffy that could be? Could another actress have done it better?

It's likely that another actress could have done it better, not that she didn't do it well.

2} Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance?

Yes, but sometimes her acting annoyed me... Maybe there was just something about her personality that didn't agree with me.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise?

In Innocence in the scene where she was crying in her room.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show?

No. At least not in the classical sense.

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them?

No.

Rugbug: My problem with SMG isn't so much that she didn't want to do the movie, but the cop-out reason she gave for it ("because the first movie didn't work"--knowing as well as anyone that Joss didn't have creative control over the first one).

Had she been honest about the reason she didn't want to do a movie (that she wanted to seperate herself from Buffy after doing the show for 7 years), I would've been sad, but I would've understood and still respected her.

That said, if she actually did want to seperate herself from Buffy, why did she choose mostly campy or horror roles since the show ended?

She's cementing herself into being typcast into those types of roles.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

1) Was she the best Buffy that could be? Could another actress have done it better? - She worked for me. There could always have been 'another' Buffy. Just like Ian McKellen might not have made the 'best' Gandalf. ( Christopher Lee had actually read for the part of Gandalf, being a life long Tolkien fan himself )

2) Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance? - I think the last few eps of the series, she / her character really took a nose dive.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise? - I've only seen the entire series once all the way through. Some of spoken of 'The Body', but I'd have to watch it all again. I think.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show? - Uhhh yeah? SMG was able to portray a wide array of looks, which I think helped her in 'being' Buffy. Of course she was hot. What a silly question.

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them? - I never really liked Scooby Doo in the 1st place. I was mildly interested to watch it, though, because she was in it. That the gang on 'Buffy' referred to themselves as 'Scoobies' and then she was in the Scooby Doo movies , makes me smile a bit.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

I'm not sure she is the one doing the choosing. You can only choose what is sent you're way.

Just like Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite and Summer Glau are mostly seen in Sci-Fi. If they're not being offered roles (or good roles) in mainstream stuff, how can they do mainstream stuff? People get type-cast for some very small reasons.

Alyson Hannigan broke out of Willow by doing American Pie...a movie she was type-cast into (dorky/geeky sort). She was funny enough to rise above the role.

SMG has had some other roles, but none that have been all that stellar. That could've been her choice, the choice of the scripts offered or maybe it's a product of her talent. It's too complex of an issue.

I have to admit that I haven't followed SMG and the 'will there be a movie' rumblings. I've known that she didn't want to, but never read anything about it, really.

But no matter, she's Buffy. She will continue to be Buffy until she shatters that type-cast MULTIPLE times...and receives recognition for it.

After all, isn't David Duchovny still Mulder and Gillian Anderson still Scully?

(Oh how strange...I'm typing the above line and my co-worker is on the phone and says Covarubbias. Eek!)

Rugbug: Did you happen to catch the Entertainment Weekly article where she "broke the news" that BUFFY, in it's current form at the time, was ending? When she said she hoped fans didn't hate her or blame her for the show ending? I wasn't one of them actually. I realized the series was ending from the back-to-the-beginning theme of "Lessons". I didn't blame her for it. I knew it was time, that Joss had taken the series as far as it could go, even though I was pretty sad about it.

What helped me through it though was both that ANGEL ended up being renewed and that in that article she claimed she told Joss not to kill Buffy because she'd love to show up on ANGEL and bring closure to the Angel & Spike romantic triangle (for me it was more about hope...I wasn't as interested in her choosing between Angel or Spike as I was about seeing the character again). What I came to find out, when ANGEL was cancelled and Joss was looking to take her up on it, she turned him down. Maybe I needed the closure myself a little too much, but it felt like a slap in the face, like the whole speel about wanting to do ANGEL was simply an attempt to keep fans from being angry at her and that she never actually meant any of it. Even David Boreanaz seemed to take it personally, as did Alexis Denisof.

A looong while later I read somewhere that Freddie was pissed that fans were pissed ('cuz believe me, I wasn't the only one who was upset by this) and belittled them (for not standing by her) and BUFFY in general. SMG ended up saying that she never meant to upset anyone, but that her aunt had died around the time and that was why she couldn't do it. Understandable if it was actually true, but why did she wait so long to explain? I have my doubts, but I'm fully willing to admit it if it turns out I am wrong.

As a former fan (way back to her AMC days) I feel insulted by her. I also feel she insulted Joss by saying the reason she wouldn't do a movie was because "the first one didn't work", which sounds like she doesn't trust that he could make a better movie with complete creative control. Another part of that same statement she made at the time was that she "didn't want to put the fans through that." So, in her opinion obviously, the fans were too stupid to know that Joss's vision for the original movie was raped by the director, so she took it upon herself to decide (for us, apparently) that it wasn't a good idea. Gee, I guess I owe her a lot then . She was really looking out for me!

I just think she has a problem with honesty, and in a pathetic attempt to make herself look better, she's gets condescending.

The best thing I can say about her now is that she didn't alter or destroy my feelings toward the character or the series.

Nope, I sure didn't. I don't read much in the way of entertainment news...except for the ocassional People while on the treadmill at the gym.

I suppose if I had followed the press I may feel differently.

And as a long time fan of Buffy...I'm not sure I want a movie anyways. The story is done, IMO. I bought the first two comics and wasn't happy. I'm okay with Buffy ending at 'Chosen.' so, that tempers my view as well.

I'd love a movie that would serve as the series finale of Season 8, whenever that will be. The comics renewed my interest in seeing it done on the big screen in a huge way. I adore these characters, and I would absolutely love to see the overall series end in live action form (Buffy & Co. verses "humanity"?!!). Especially since we never got to see the live action version of Joss's actual vision of the original BUFFY movie. Or his version of Wonder Woman.

I feel it could potentially also give some of the actors a career boost...so they don't have to resort to cheesy 'B' movies on the Sci-Fi or Lifetime channel and the like. Think about all the little girls out there who might not have been exposed to the Buffy series? It could potentially reach them, too, which might make them want to see the series. And I'm not just thinking about DVD sales here, I'm thinking about them having a strong female role model to inspire them. Not all of us had that growing up.

very cute, but I'd have to say Charisma Carpenter really does it for me...

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them?

They made Scooby Doo movies???

The characters have aged too, don't forget. I don't think age would be a problem.

1: SMG shows how Buffy should be done. Kristy Swanson shows how it shouldn't be done. Even in her not so good movies SMG still does a professional job. Although Alyson was the better actress overall IMO, SMG still did a fantastic job.

2: For the most part she was there. All actors/actresses have off days when a show has a long run. Even when she did she was still better than some other shows 'acting'.

3: Easy. When she killed Angel and the rest of that episode (the favourite of many with good reason).

4: Yes, but again Alyson was hotter. She wouldn't be that high up if I was to make a list either, FHM style. There are plenty of hotter females out there - in no order: Grace Park, Summer Glau, Reese Witherspoon, Emilie De Ravin, Nicole DeBoer, Elisha Cuthbert to name a few. But she is still very pleasing to the eye.

5: I watched Scooby 1 half coz she was in it, and half coz it was Scooby Doo (who is cool). But it was utter trash and watching Scooby 2 would be torture of the worst kind that only soap operas and reality TV could beat...

...or a surprise visit from the Spanish Inquisition with a fluffy cushion.

No, really, 2 was way better than 1, and actually worth seeing IMO!

Thing with Scooby Doo and the Gang was that they went to great lengths to disprove the myth of Ghosts and Ghoulies and yet in the film these very things are just part of the reality... Which is odd because it kind of makes the whole Scooby and the Gang redundant... Doesn't it? Or did I read that all wrong... I'll confess here and now I've only watched a few minutes of two....

Anyway... hohum.

Zoinks!!
Now I guess there's no point in me doing my marathon Scooby Doo cartoon weekend. It was the dude in the mask, with the candlestick at the abandoned funfair all along.

Well as a fellow Browncoat says it's better I'll take the chance and watch SD2, next time it's on Sky. I won't hold CIA responsible for what state my mind will be in after though!!

1) Was she the best Buffy that could be? Could another actress have done it better?
Like many others, I can't imagine anyone else as Buffy. Especially Julie Benz, who read for the part. Imagine Darla as Buffy!

2} Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance?
Everyone eventually phones in a performance in a show that goes on for that long. The one I remember being disappointed with was 'Older and Far Away'. Oh by the way, when I saw everyone, I exlude Alan Alda in M*A*S*H.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise?
'Amends' - the speech on the hill. A big suprise choice from me.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show?
Eliza Dushku. 'nuff said.

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them?
Nope, caught half of one on TV once. Seemed crap.

1- I don't know who could have been better, I thought she was fantastic. The only one who could out-Buffy her is Kristin Bell, but she's too late.

2- There were times in the last season where I felt like the whole cast was phoning it in, mainly because they didn't seem to get what was going on. I didn't either.

3- Body, with her mom's passing. Outstanding.

4- Hot, you betcha. Hottest on the show, yep, after Cordy left. Cordy was smokin. Of course, this is not to say that there weren't other hotties on there, just that SMG was the hottest post-Cordy.

5- Yes.

While me and my household have long been fans of the Doo, I was in no way interested in seeing the movies until I found out she was in them. I hold my head high in the fact that I'm honest, as opposed to many others who either claim to haven't seen the films, or who claim support for another star.

I'm surprised that so many people have mentioned "Amends" as the favorite bit of SMG's acting ability. I didn't think too much of that episode to begin with. When I first saw it, the thing that took me out of it was the fact that at the end of the ep during her speech it began to snow.

It's the same thing that took me out of CRASH. I cannot believe for a second that it would snow in California. I don't care if it is a Hellmouth and that weird shit happens all the time there. For there to be half a foot of snow in the streets on X-Mas Eve in California, that just makes me go "Nope. Don't buy it. You're pushing it with the fact that in this town that full of monsters and demons that very few outside of the Scoobies notice this. But snow in California is too much for me."

If there's a YouTube clip of that moment, please send me a link to it.

Sorry, but I don't think you could have missed the point more.

It began to snow not as a coincidence, but as a sign that something other than the First wanted Angel to live. I think it's generally accepted this is where we get the first hints of The Powers That Be who became so prominent in AtS.

The snow was a direct response to Buffy's question "If I can't convince you that you belong in this world, I don't know what can". Angel required a miracle to show him that he was more than a timebomb waiting to go off, and the snow was that.

I saw parallels between the snow in 'Amends' and the rain in one of my other favourite Joss-scenes from 'Lullaby' in Angel season 3:

Select to view spoiler:

When the rain came down to wash Darla of her sins as she committed suicide in her one redeeming selfless act. The rain was symbolic of the gift of grace for her. Snow on the other hand, is more of a symbol of a fresh start. Snow doesn't cleanse, only covers. It gives you a chance to "write" what you want on it, and that was what AtS was all about - what Angel chose to do with this blank canvas. In fact, I would almost say that in a way, 'Amends' was the first episode of Angel. Maybe a view shared by whoever chose to include a couple of shots from 'Amends' in the opening credits of Angel season 1.

EMBERS

1. I think that SMG did an awesome job as Buffy, I never had any quarrel with any of her performances...
but I do think the other's could have played the roll, or could at some point in the future.

In the mean time I hold to my stance that the Buffy in the S8 comic book looks EXACTLY like the real Buffy (and SMG has gotten a little bit delicate and skinny looking these days)

2. I never for one moment felt that she was phoning it in, I thought all of her performances were strong and believable (I really do admire SMG's work as the Buffster).

3. Okay, everyone is talking about the drama of The Body, but I actually liked her work the best (and thought it was the more difficult to do) when she had to do comedy. I loved Pangs, when SMG was channeling Martha Stewart! She was very funny. I loved her when she went nuts in Living Conditions... I love the comedy!

4. well, she is very cute, but I thought that Giles was hotter (LOL)
and Spike! Big Spike fan here.

5. I tuned in to Scooby-Doo a couple of times and I couldn't stand it for 2 minutes without changing the channel! One thing though: her doing so many of them just proves that she'll do ANYTHING on the big screen, I'm sure she would be happy to reprise Buffy if it was a movie format!

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I've been watching the series a second time through. The first time I watched it, I mostly disliked Buffy as a character and SMG as an actress. I thought she was, for the most part, closed off and cold, with little to no tenderness in her nature. I thought SMG as an actress was flat and uninteresting and not very skilled.
Watching it again, some of that still holds, but not all. Actually SMG is a good actress, she has tremendous technique. The thing is, technique isn't everything. She can be acting flawlessly and I still feel nothing. I'm not sure if it's passion that's lacking in her performance, or what it is, but it doesn't always touch me. It has gotten me at times, though. I've shed a few more tears over Buffy's travails this time through. Mostly, though, I still think she's kind of a total bitca. She fails to express simple gratitude at several points. She is closed-off, much of the time, and it causes her to treat people rather badly. Not through malice, just through unawareness. Okay, some of it is also malice, especially when it comes to Spike. A lot of that comes from the writing, and I wonder how much of the writing was inspired by the personality SMG might have brought to the role and how much of it was calculated. It seems kind of... odd, I suppose... to make your heroine a rather unsympathetic character. I don't know if they just worked harder at making the other characters more sympathetic because the show wasn't named after them or what it was, but there are many factors that make Buffy one of my least favorite characters on her own show, and i think at least some of it is the actress. Now that I've babbled about that because I've been so immersed in the show for the last few weeks, causing me to dig up old threads that I wonder if anyone even cares about anymore, I'll go ahead and actually answer the questions posed.

1) Was she the best Buffy that could be? Could another actress have done it better?
I don't think she was, no. I found it really interesting to find out she was originally cast as Cordelia, because I was figuring she was cast as Buffy because she was petite and blond, and likely gave a good performance. The two actresses on the top of my head that I think would have made a good Buffy are both on the show as other characters I love, so... I'll have to think about who I really would have liked to see do it. Claire Danes kind of comes to mind, but I'm not sure that's quite right. I like her, though, and I think she would've been around the right age for the role. Not sure I can see her kicking vampire butt... although I never would have thought it would be convincing when SMG did it, either. And actually, since her stunt double is taller and a bit more built than she is, I play "spot the stuntwoman" a lot in those fights. I digressed.

2) Was she always there on Buffy- ie, never phoning in a perfomance?
Well, as I said earlier, I don't think the passion was there much of the time. I think she worked at her performances, though. Kind of a tough call, really.

3) What was her best moment on the show, acting-wise?
I've actually been most impressed by her as Buffy-bot, because it was so different; light-hearted and silly rather than all dark and tragic, which I think she only nailed about half the time anyway.

4) Was she hot, IYO? Hottest on the show?
No. I thought she looked pretty good in the first few episodes, darker hair and more curvage suited her well, but even then she was far from the hottest. I'll admit I think her nose looks funny, and the more weight she lost the odder it seemed to look, not to mention all her curves going away. I've spent most of my Buffy-watching time being not at all attracted to her. Willow, Faith, Tara... I could go on, but I'm kind of stuck on those right now.

5) Have you watched Scooby Doo 1 & 2 just because she was in them?
Oh hells no.
