Everyone talks about how in season 2 when Buffy and Angel have sex which turns Angel into Angelus, that that moment is when the show became THE SHOW. And that and her running a sword through him to keep Hell on Earth from opening up at the end of the season were the most powerful moments of the series and that an entire generation cried and all that and said Shakespeare ripped off Whedon or some crap like that.

Personally, that was one moment that didn't do a damn thing for me. Maybe it's because I never really bought the Buffy/Angel relationship. It seemed more of a plot contrivance than a genuine attraction, which never really had much chemistry, I found. Plus, when she saw Angel acting the complete opposite of his regular self, a huge red flag should have gone up in her head instead of just crying about it. Maybe I'm saying this because I'm not a teenage girl, but from a storyteller's POV, this just seems lazy and cheap.

Also, I found Angel in the first three seasons of Buffy to be a pretty bland character with not much of a personality. It was when he left and got his own show that Angel, to me anyways, actually became interesting. So him turning into Angelus in season 2 didn't have that much power to me because I didn't care about him to begin with. When Angelus returned in season 4 of ANGEL, THEN I actually sat up and considered him a true threat.

So I second you Clementine. With the exception of "I Will Remember You" in ANGEL, Buffy/Angel means absolutely nothing.

In that scene as Angelus beats Buffy down, he gives the whole, "You've lost everything" speech. What I still find moving is the
A: "What have you got left?"
Buffy catches the sword blade in her bare hands.
B: "Me."

Wow, if I'd said anything close to this on Whedonesque, I'd be a charred cinder by now. And sternly warned by the moderator about 'shipping issues.

I love that in the end, Buffy truly loves both Spike and Angel, and that it goes beyond the simplistic 'boyfriend' thing.

but that was true at the time, it was the most powerful up to that point, it just pales next to what came after...

hmm, maybe, but I actually was a teenage girl at the time and I can see why she'd just be confused and a bit slow to catch on... I don't think it was lazy...

Related subject: The impact of Riley's leaving has also faded for me; I cried for Buffy the first time, but now his leaving seems contrived, on more than one level. I still feel bad for the Buffster, but it reeks of 'Time for Rebound Guy to go' syndrome.

When they were moving Buffy back out of the dorm (Anya: Didn't we just move her in? Yay, lifting heavy things!) and it's just Riley and Xander, Riley says that he loves Buffy utterly but he knows that she doesn't love him the same way...

No fade, I still really feel for the guy. Poor pathetic weenie.

See, now ya got ia all backwards. I was having a go at Chrisisall for goin' all Nancy on the Spike/Buffy couplin' NOT because of Spike, but because of what Buffy was going through. I then said the whole affair was simply Buffy needin' to get her itch scratched, which I felt was a very Spike way of puttin' things. ( One could also argue that's something Faith would say, but because I said Spike first, that's how it is )

Chrisisall was all a flutter over Buffy's feelings, ya see ? It wasn't so much about Spike, but the tragic situation Buffy found herself in. Get it ?

And Chrisisall still has the mental make up of a teenage girl, so you 2 have THAT in common.
