I just read that she's apparently turned down a role seemingly written for her (the new character sounded suspiciously like Veronica Mars) in favor of doing Broadway. Specifically the next lead in the Legally Blonde musical which would begin in February. She's turning down the opportunity to live and work in Hawaii on a mainstream show (a show I love almost as much as VERONICA) that would have undoubtedly boost her visibility, in favor of living and working in New York doing something that, well, wouldn't.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that she's doing something that will evidently make her happy, but I was so thrilled about the idea of her joining LOST in a Veronica-like (okay, ANY) role, that I can't help but be disappointed too...for me.

Gorramit!

Joss Whedon: Well, there may be some female empowerment in it at some point. [Laughs.] I don't know who put that there. It's the same brew that I tend to brew, which is a combination of horror, and heroes, and people crying, and female empowerment. It's the thing that's made my career..."

That's surprising to say the least. Guess she wants to stay to the stage route these days.

It's oddly similar to the road I hoped the Buffy/Angel/Firefly casts would've gone though. That they'd get/do roles that would earn them respectability rather than whatever would make the most money or fame. I wanted them to be taken seriously...and B movies on the Sci-Fi Channel just ain't cutting it. It's good that they can pay the bills and I get to see them once in a while, but when the average viewer/critic/casting director sees it, what the hell are they going to think? I want those people (the PTB I guess) to see in them what WE see.

But in Kristen's case, LOST is actually a really good show (with a cult show mentality) that happens to have mainstream success. That's what kills me.

Just a voice decision of hers. I'd assume she's doing it just to have some sense of down time and not be in the lime light. Probably end up staying on the stage and film route until something else comes along that really hooks her attention.

Just read that she's also going to be appearing on Heroes. Hmmmm, Heroes vs Lost. That may have had more to do with it than the stage acting.

According to this article, a main factor for her choosing Heroes might have been the shooting schedule. They are just able to fit around the times she's available.

Again, happy for her, sad for me. I don't watch HEROES any more than I go see Broadway shows. Nothing against it at all, it's just not for me.

If she'd done LOST, it'd be a triple treat for me. Not only do I love the show already, but the idea that the character was clearly written with Veronica in mind (not just the hopeful casting, but the personality of the character she would have played) would have made losing VERONICA MARS a little easier to get over. Plus she's just great...period.

personally I lost interest in Lost two years ago,
and I see nothing surprising in Kristen Bell not wanting to commit to being in Hawaii for filming.

I think Heroes is a very fun show and I'll be interested in seeing what her role is on it...
and hopefully it will allow her free time to do other things as well.

I completely understand your opinion about LOST. Even I was getting bored in Season 2, but I LOOOVED Season 3, except for the long gap between the first quarter and the rest. I never thought about giving it up though, EVER. I'm way too invested in the characters for that !!!

I love VM, but I don't think I would want to see her on LOST if she were just going to play the same character again. Wings! Stretching! Good!

Kristen was so believable in that type of role though, that I couldn't accept her as a dumb little weakling either. No random role would do. Just like it was kind of pathetic to watch I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER or SCREAM 2 and seeing SMG act all helpless and dumb. Not to say that's what she'd play on HEROES, I don't know. I was too upset at the time to read that part. Like I said, I have nothing against that show, but I would have to have seen it from the beginning to know for sure if I would even like it or not, which I have yet to do.

I doubt the role on LOST would've been exactly like Veronica, anyway, but there were definite similarities. As interesting as those qualities are, how do we know it wasn't a ploy just to get her interested, since it's fairly well-known how much she loved playing Veronica?

Also, just want to say to HEROES fans who never watched VERONICA or don't know much about Kristen Bell, I'm glad you finally get to see what the rest of us (and critics) have been raving about. Happy for you, still sad for me.

The Auseillo Report:

Kristen Bell's my Hero!

It's enough to send fanboys over the edge: Kristen Bell, who earned her cult-TV superstar stripes during her three years as Veronica Mars, is joining HEROES for at least 13 episodes beiginning October 22. In this quickie Q & A, Bell dances around the subject of her myserious character, explains why she turned down an offer from LOST, and takes a stand on the subject of a Mars movie.

It's no secret that you've been fielding offers, including from LOST, right?
Being able to stay in {Los Angeles and not relocate to Hawaii] was a little bitof a factor for me [in turning LOST down]. But I was honored to even be considered. I love that show.

Was part of the appeal of doing HEROES the fact that it's a limited gig, thus allowing you to keep your career options open?
That was extremely appealing. Also, everyone I know who is involved in HEROES has had nothing but excellent things to say about what it's like to work there.

There's buzz that your HEROES character, Elle, may be evil. True?
That's a possibility. I hope so. It would be really nice to play the bad guy.

Does she have a power?
Yeah, I have a really awesome power.

Mars creator Rob Thomas has expressed interest in doing a movie version of the show. Would you be up for that?
Oh, absolutely. I'd do anything Rob asked me. I knew some things that were going to happen in Season 4 that I'm not going to dare say, 'cause that's probably what the movie is going to be about.

C'mon, give me a hint.
I wish I could tell you, because it's REALLY good.
