Yes, sadly it's true. After jumping in and out of pre-production for nearly a year. It was supposed to be part of FOX's FOX Kids Saturday morning line-up, but FOX decided that they wanted to try a different approach to Saturday mornings. A production pilot was made, and apparently you can find it on yahoo if you search hard enough (I haven't found it), although the series never entered production. (A production pilot is a short presentation produced in order to get the network to pick it up. "Firefly" does not have one b/c, in a weird deal, FOX just offered Joss 13 eps. The original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" did have one, a 25 minute presentation similar to "Welcome to the Hellmouth" starring Riff Reagan instead of Alyson Hannigan. This one is easy to find online.) At least half a dozen scripts were written, by authors including Joss Whedon, Jane Espenson, and Steven S. DeKnight. The show also had some legal issues, namely, finding a satisfactory animation house. That is why it never entered the production stage. Hopefully, Joss will try again on this one in a couple years.

The last information I heard was that there were 3 episodes completed, all staring the original cast. Then, 6 more scripts were turned in, and the ADR began with all new voice actors. I don't think that any more than the first three episodes were animated, though.

My info. may be off... I could have misunderstood the whole thing.

Still, they say the reason the show has been shelved was that they couldn't find anyone interested in it. While that may be the case, I find it hard to believe that Cartoon Network or Kids WB! wouldn't be interested. Perhaps this is an issue with Fox not allowing their product on non-Fox related networks?

Do you have a link to where to download the unaired pilot, because I've been searching forever and I can only come up with screencaps and the shooting script.

Try using KaZaA. That's where I downloaded it.

I'm almost certain it never entered production (although everyone but SMG did sign on to do their regular characters voices). It did enter preproduction at least twice. If you dig through BBC's Cult Buffy News Archive ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/buffy/news/), you can find very accurate info.

New Info from Sci-Fi Wire:

As far as the animated show, "I still like the idea," Whedon said. "We still have a bunch of really good scripts. But I won't do it at a price. That's a show that has to look wonderful. It has to be as good as it can be. And a lot of animation houses just can't contain that. So the money isn't there right now. So right now, I'm not planning on it."

New Interview @ the Hollywood Reporter:

Quote:

THR: What happened to the plans for the animated series?

Whedon: We just couldn't find a home for (it). We had a great animation director, great visuals, six or seven hilarious scripts from our own staff -- and nobody wanted it. I was completely baffled. I felt like I was sitting there with bags of money and nobody would take them from me. It was a question of people either not wanting it or not being able to put up the money because it was not a cheap show. One thing I was very hard-line about was, I didn't want people to see it if it looked like crap. I wanted it to be on a level with "Animaniacs" or "Batman: The Animated Series." And that's a little pricier. But I just don't think it's worth doing unless it's beautiful to look at as well as fun.

I just found it at www.thehollywoodreporter.com. Whedon interview is promo'd on the front page. You will be annoyed at fact that click on promo takes you to another bloody promo, this time with couple of extra paragraphs. Click on Full Story to get complete interview.
Here's direct URL (if it works)
