Oh my gosh, what a GREAT episode of Buffy last night! monster of the week was a little bit cheesy, but the dialog was hysterical, great tension level throughout, and (spoiler quotes for those who haven't seen it yet...)

Select to view spoiler:

Spike being stark raving mad! James Marsters was so good. I'm so glad that they didn't try anything remotely angel-like. I was not looking forward to even a few episodes of Spike being mopey/broody boy.

And, the MonsterMorph at the end... is it a new big bad? or is Spike just crazy?

What did everybody else think?

Loved it :)...

I was one of the seemingly few that liked season 6 too... But I have to agree that the humour (that's back) been sorely missed...

This seems to be a very interesting season... :)

No, I don't think that morph-o-monster was just a voice in Spike's crazy little head. After all, there is no evidence to suggest that Spike ever knew the Mayor or the Master, except by reputation.

Maybe I'm still recovering from the incoherency of last season, But it seemed like the whole show is getting a little dog-eared. Yeah, it had its moments, as always. But some of the jokes were pretty forced (you've lived in England for 3 months and you still don't know what "Bangers and Mash" is?). And it's always a bad sign when a show starts commenting on its own credibility issues. Like the fact that vampires all seem to have studied martial arts (some things are better left unsaid) and Dawn being taller than her "big" sister (not even the first time they used that one).

And WTF is that chase scene at the beginning of the teaser? Obviously the beginning of a some major story line, but how can you throw something like that in and ignore it for the rest of the episode.

Still, the ending has a nice "and then what happened" quotient.

JOSH, WHERE'S MY CHECK???!!!

PANDORA

I have to agree with Ziccy's assessment of the episode.

It was a welcome change from S6 reruns, mos def, however, it felt awkward in places.

I wasn't all that impressed with the beast of the week, however, it was a little more reminiscent of S1 fare in its lack of arc-iness.

Dialogue was funny, but Zic's points about old and awkward jokes rings true.

Overall, I'm hoping this was just a bit of a weird transitional thing, and that over the course of the season, things will improve. The episode made me ok with the end of BtVS - it peaked at S5, and it's time to give her a good send off. If it's a good season, it'll be a nice way to end things. I only hope it will be.

As a bit of a nitpick, it seemed like Dawn was saying a whole lot for somebody who claimed not to like being in the introduce the self to the class situation.

They've been doing that since season 2 and the gag about the Scoobies forgetting that the library is actually a place where kids occasionally want borrow books. My feeling is it's fun if you don't overuse it and I don't think they have yet.

I'm also tempted to say that in a universe where Dawn can learn some pretty nifty moves just by watching, maybe martial arts come pretty naturally to anyone.

Also the height thing isn't incredible, it's just a fact of life in some families. My brother was taller at 16 than my sister who was 20.

For me a general problem with this episode is there seems to be so much setup for the future and little pay-off now. Doesn't help that the zombies were dealt with so easily.

I may like this episode more in retrospect when I see where they're going.

Well, obviously this wasn't the plot of the episode. Obviously it was a little glimpse of the season's major plot... something that will be gradually explained. You know... like a mystery... cause that's what this plot thread is...

You can ignore this for two reasons:

1) The characters involved in the main plot have no idea what is going one yet.
2) This plot thread will most likely be a gradual satisfaction kind of thing. It's a mystery who that girl even is... and would you want the mystery to be laid out on the table up front? That might be bad for the suspence.

Now onto my opinion of the episode:

Lessons was a *fantastic* episode. It just might be the best season-opener they've had (even better than "When She Was Bad" and "Anne!"). The humor was clever, the story was mysterious, the acting was great (epspecially Marsters), and it did a phenomenal job of introducing the season's plot.

Plus, it contained *the best* coreographed fight scene on Buffy ever (the last one with the backpack... now *that* was hysterical... cause kids' backpacks are so heavy nowadays... get it? Get it!? ), and potentially the most exciting Buffy scene ever (the opening was exhilerating).

Finally, he cinematography was great (the best I've seen on Buffy, actually. Kudos to the new DP! S/He really has a skill for lighting a scene to get the fullest emotional effect!) and the direction was fantastic (nice job, David Solomon! I believe I've underestimated your talent). My only gripe was with the filmstock... it was sort of grainy.

So yeah, I'm expecting quite an amazing season.

Thank you, Dylan. I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved it. Was there nothing I would change? of course not. But, I'm not working for the show (much to my disappointment). But so long as Joss hasn't hired me, I'd say it was a darned near perfect Buffy episode. The only thing that could have made it better is if they had somehow managed for there to be cross-over action to/from Angel.

As far as I'm concerned, Buffy rocked tuesday. I'm probably gonna watch the tape a couple more times this weekend. Oh, and about Istanbul chick from the teaser--how is that any different from the way "The Freshman" ended with the sholdier guys running off with the vamp? It's called "setup." And knowing Whedon, when all is revealed, it's gonna rock.

And I think the ending alone qualifies the episode as the best season opener ever. The morph-O-monster scene is now one of my favorites ever. What a great set up for things to come!
