1) Nicely written, low in budget, but creative as Hell(Mouth).
2) Too much teen angst, but ambitious, and totally entertaining.
3) Wow. Just, Wow. Raise the bar, why don't you?
4) Fun season, nice new boyfriend, good transition to college- if you dislike it, HUSH!
5) Glory was funny, but the whole season didn't work for me. Fool For Love was its saving grace.
Kill Mom, Kill Buffy...
6) Ahh, dark Willow. I can work with that.
And Once More With Feeling... awesome!!!
7) Now we're TALKIN"!!! My favourite season by far. Best music. Best fights. Andrew... "Chosen"... and I even didn't mind Kennedy!
Poor Anya & Xander, though.

Next?

Reviwed and in order of appreciation:

1) Season Three - Strong arc all the way through, great individual episodes - Slayerfest 1999, Oz going Wolf, Mayor Wilkins, Wish and Graduation Day... Simply brilliant!

2) Season Two - Spike and Drusilla. Best villains and Buffy was still 'cute'

3) Season Four - The best for laughs and the best for music (take a bow Christophe Beck). Has Restless, and Hush which are serious contenders for best episodes ever.

4) Season Seven - Wrapped up nicely. Brilliant to see Buffy smile, and Principle Woods' story was clever. Plus y'know Nathan as Caled - best villain since Spike and Drusilla.

5) Season Five - Hmm. All that hopsital action with Joyce is tough to revisit but it had a cracking finalé, and I kinda liked the idea of Dawn. Glory was tiresome though.

6) Season One - It's just fun, and Xander falling for Buffy was heart-wrenching. Willow is awesome and unlike any major character on TV and Buffy becomes an ICON.

7) Season Six - The only one I truly don't like. Willow is a different character, and the darkness is contrived and the finalé is just embarrasing.

Season Three has always been my favourite, It's about as perfect as can be. Over the years I've appreciated season Four more than I did first time around as it has the best laughs, but It'll probably never push season Two from 2nd place because of Spike and Drusilla who frankly make season two so good.

That season made me squirm, cry & get angry.
I liked it for slamming me, unlike season 5, where I thought they took some easy roads. Kill the hero- been there, read that.

But she wasn't just a Heroine - she was an ICON. Joss killed an Icon! It was really rather brave... Pity it didn't end there, it would have been epic!

Season six made me feel that Buffy slipped into Dawsons Creek territory.

Season six made me feel that she was as real, as flawed, and as capable of being in as much emotional pain as I was...
I guess we see in our shows the importance reflected in our lives at the time.

When Joyce died, it was SO painful to watch- it was like re-living the time when I was called home to see my own Mom lifeless on her bed...
Yes, it was a masterfully done ep, yes, it was high art in its way, but for me, it was waaay to close to the bone...
And placing it in a season full of Glory shenanigans just made it that much more unsettling for me.

Okay, rant over.

I've not had that personally big 'C', but I did have to endure two years of my mother in and out of hospital, with each visit promising a cure. She got lucky because one such visit did provide one, but it was harrowing for some time, and incredibly exhausting. Another reason why season five is hard to re-watch for me.

Sorry for what you had to go through though Chris.

I'm currently re-watching the series (midway through 4 right now) so I shall opine once I'm done.

I understand big 'C' but I just couldn't buy the darkness given she had just come back from the dead. Surely what she was going through with Spike was well... not that bad! Least she was alive! I mean the guys a louse sure but so what? I think the 'Buffy is in such a bad place' thing was just too rammed down out throats it became contrived, especially as all this guilt over an unforbidden relationship had been done already with Angel.

Add to that, the other characters and their individual woes and really you are taking your audince to a place they already know where you're going. So much so that the idea that Xander and Anya were going to actually get married was ridiculous. I must say there were about seven or eight episodes where it just didn't do anything I wasn't expecting - which for Buffy was unusual.

As you know I re-watched six again to give it a second chance and the best episode for me was NORMAL AGAIN. That was very interesting and genuinely conjured conflict in me as a viewer. I'd have loved that arc for four or five episodes! But what ya going to do. I guess there has to be one season which falters compared to the others right... Mine just happens to be Season Six.

....Just realised.. I really enjoy a discussion about Buffy

Personally, I though Glory was just silly. And the reasoning behind Dawn just didn't work for me. It was too much nonsense in what was essentially a downward spiral in her life, eventually ending in her death.

The thing I liked about six is that it was just DARK (you know, aside from the terrible trio). And she found her way out. And Spike fought for his soul!!! And Willow was gorram SCARY!!!
And Xander got to save the day!!!!

In order of greatness

Season 3 yeah it was pretty much the best. Faith was a great way to show what Buffy could have become. The Mayor was hilarious. Angel was still around. Golden.

Season 2 Angelus, Spike, Drusila. Enough said.

Season 5 Initially Dawn was so much of a wtf moment that I was really ticked. Then when we found out she wasn't just some ridiculous "what you never noticed Buffy's sister before" addition it all started to sort itself out. I don't know why people hate on Glory. She was another funny yet dangerous villain. My biggest hang up for the whole season was that Buffy seemed to be killing those ren fair losers left and right. Then they talked about how she was too good to kill Ben.

Season 1 Obviously they had a low budget and not a lot of time to develop a big long story. Still the funny was there and buffy wore lots of boots and short skirts. Can't argue with that.

Season 7 There were definitely some issues in this one. Kennedy? What a disaster that was. Conversations with Dead People seemed like an awesome episode but then there was no payoff. A warning about Xander driving Dawn to safety? Really? I understand that they needed to introduce the potentials to get the finale lined up, but they were just a big ball of annoying most of the time. Plus they killed a nice hot one right off the bat. Basically is started out strong and ended with a wimper.

Season 6 The trio was a pretty awful idea IMO. The magic = drugs = bad thing was too heavy handed. Buffy and Spike never worked for me. That was just thrown in for the fanboys IMO. If it weren't for like 1 episode with evil willow and Once More with Feeling this would easily be the worst season.

Season 4 what a disaster this was. We trade Angel for Riley - fail. We trade Oz for Tara - mega fail. We find out the government has their own organization designed to study and fight demons. Makes it all too mainstream. High point was Faith's return. Hush was ok and all but I don't get the love fest over that episode. Like the Initiative this season should be buried and they should salt the Earth.

Yeah, it looked to be going somewhere big, and then, *reset button pushed*
It was like, they really weren't prepared to go global with future stories. Kinda make me wish it hadn't gone there at all.
The comics picked up on it bigtime, though...

Yeah, definitely the best (although my favourite was 7).
One thing though, why would anyone WANT to become a creepy giant worm-thing???

IMO, if Buffy had ended right there, it would have been awesome enough (as season 4 was iffy at times, and season five was my least favourite of them all). Luckily for ME, we got season 7.

Indeed Storymark I see that, but it just doesn't compare. None of it is as dark as being dead. Not for Buffy and not for her friends and it is they who seem the most shocked. And as for us the viewer well we're happy to see Buffy back so her canoodling with Spike is a bit like:

"Sure go do your thing..."

Wait what! I'm supposed to be disgusted... Why? We had a Slayer kill a guy already. She's gone rouge and fighting her demons in 'Angeland'. It is not that bigger deal that this slayer is messing with Spike....Was it really that dark?

My DVD history with Buffy:

After getting Firefly, I was intrigued by Buffy, so I bought the first season. Crude FX and VHS-like picture did not take away from the fact that it was well written, so I got the second season.
I enjoyed Spike & Dru immensely, and weighed whether I should get the next season. It wasn't a hard choice.
Season 3 was all colourful & sharp-looking & such! What an awesome ride!!
I then found season 4 on sale used, and snapped it up. Different, but good. Had some misgivings...

So, I bought season 5.
Whoah, majorly bummed. Not liking it too much...

Around then another DVD set was coming out (I think it was Brisco County Jr, or maybe something else...), so I sold Buffy 1, 2, & 5 to finance the new purchase.
THEN the Chosen Collection was on sale, so I sold seasons 3 & 4 to help pay for it.
I had been warned on this very site that season 6 might be hard to get through, but I found that season 5 was what gave me problems. I grooved on 6. And 7? Well you know how I feel about that.

Then Star Trek remastered season 2 (my favourite season) came out, so I sold the Chosen Collection, and with the extra $$ after buying Trek, I got season 6 & 7 of Buffy, and the Spike DVD collection.

I watched most seasons of Buffy at least 3 times, 5 times for #3, and 6 or more for #'s 6 & 7.

Well, that's my history with Buffy.

In case anyone's interested.

Nice history of Buffy Chris. I remember egging you to purchase those DVD's.

Like to think I did some good in the world :D

My history goes thus:

A good friend (also called Chris by the way) says to me:
"Ric watch Buffy!!!"
I'm like:
"Balls to that! I saw the flick and it was bobbins!"
So friend says:
"No Ric - WATCH Buffy. It's WAY better than the film."
Me thinking to myself - What TV show is better than the film? When did that ever happen?
"Nah you're yanking my particulars! Leave me alone"
Time passes. Friend calls me up.
"Dude switch on your f***in TV!"
I do. I catch 'The Harvest'. I see Buffy in a Prom Dress with a Crossbow!
"What the ?! This is actually pretty good! and how come this Xander dood is almost as bad with the ladies as I am...?"

Fast forward a few years:
Me:
"Chris I just had a crappy day at work and to cheer myself up I bought Seasons One,Two & Three. Come over for a week and we'll watch the lot!"
After that I was pretty much pre-ordering seasons, and inviting several friends whom I'd converted, to come over and watch Buffy.

You were a main pusher, if memory serves.
I kept posting questions, and kept getting positives.
Except for Finn, remember? He kept saying that season five is where you should stop buying. HE was the reason I paused in between getting season 5, and going for the Chosen Collection! GRRRR. Little did I know then that I'd like the end the best.

I think the point was that a Slayer's life is SO tasking, that death in the warm embrace of the Afterlife feels like a calm & loving reward for services rendered. Being yanked out would be a shock to say the least.

3. The show knows what it is and all cylinders are firing. Best story, best arc, best character development.

2. Finds itself and becomes the "Buffy" we know and love. Does a lot of what 3 does just a bit less of it.

5. Really ups the ante for Buffy and does a great job of pushing the concept od Slayerness and Buffy herself to the limit. The end is beautiful Heroic tragedy.

4. Very underrated. There's a string of good to great standalones in this season, some of which are the most innovative eps of the whole show.

1. Bit of a wobbly colt but all the ingredients for greatness are there.

7. At least it's not 6.

6. Overall a godawful, miscalculated, mishandled misfire.

P.S.

8. Can't judge as I have no idea why anything is happening or why people are doing what they're doing.

But what I would really tell any Joss fan who is actually sad is to watch their favourite Joss thing. Be it whatever season or episodes of whatever show, movie, comic, or internet extravaganza is their favourite.

PERFECTPARADIGM

Well...

S1 –

Funny, clever, endearing. I recently watched this season again and was surprised by how much I laughed, cried and wet myself like an itty bitty baby connecting with these characters. It really is a superbly crafted character-driven show. Unfortunately, the character of Angel doesn't fully blossom here (later), but that would be my only character qualm. Buffy as a character is also, to me, at her most likable in this season. This is what gives the season, despite its shortcomings, something the other seasons don't have. After this season, Buffy is less bubbly and carefree and more worrying and angst. But she’s still an icon, and an awesome icon at that. The character of Giles seems fully formed from the get-go, Willow is instantly relatable and adorable, and Xander is... Xander. 'Nuff said. What also held the show up despite the corny music and low budget, besides the characters, was the dialogue. Witty and, as I said, endearing.

S2 –

ANGSTY ANGSTY ANGST ANGST.

Just kidding. Awesomeness.

Touching, heartfelt, poignant. Many of the themes related to adolescence (well of course there's gotta be some teen angst, which is just sadness as experienced by teenagers really, who hasn't been there. IT'S PART OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE PEOPLE). Introduction to Spike and Dru, and later Angelus – excellent.

S3 –

The Major and Faith = fabulous sensational seasonal villains. Moreso the previous vamp trio. The themes touched on morality and guilt, responsibility and freedom as Buffy’s high school days come to a close. Faith savours her freedom as a Slayer far more than Buffy, but at what cost?
Also, best way to finish high school ever! Epic win!!!

S4 –

Underrated, yes. Not the strongest season arc, but episode by episode... many of the true Buffy greats lie here. You've got clever, light, comedic episodes like 'Something Blue' and 'A New Man', enchanting episodes like ‘Hush’ and ‘Restless’ (my personal favourite episode). And many more. Also, Beer Bad was underrated. Don’t hurt me, Buffy fans who still remember the names of the episodes if you’re still around here...

Despite the comparatively weak seasonal arc, I also thoroughly enjoyed the original four merging in ‘Primeval’. I really appreciated that. ‘You cannot begin to grasp our power’ Buffy says, as she is joined by the mind of Giles, the heart of Xander and the spirit of Willow. At the core, nothing can break these four friends apart.

S5 –

A very solid season. Outstanding season finale. But there was something... something different. And it wasn't just Dawn's sudden appearance or Spike’s sudden affections for Buffy. The season didn’t make me like the show any less, however I understand why some are turned off by it. There was something genuinely different about the feel of the show, but it wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Wasn’t loving the absence of Christophe Beck, the music made it seem a little like some kind of schmulzy family adventure movie. Yeah... no thanks.

Still, loved Glory as a villain and also appreciated the boldness of the show in introducing the new character of Dawn in such a way.

James Marsters did a great job of pulling off the ‘Spike loves Buffy’ thing. A lot of old fans would have been turned off by it (and a whole lot of new ones created *cough* outrageous spuffy fic *cough*...), but I didn’t actually have that much of a problem with it. It wasn’t exactly as though Buffy’s romances were what drew me to the show in the first place... I prefer Angel in his own show and find him to be a stronger character there. Years go by... things change. I mean, when 4 years have passed you would expect some kind of change (not necessarily full on LOVE as result of pure burning HATRED but still) – in fact, that’s what I like about Buffy. Every season had a different atmosphere, a different quality, a different.... taste almost. I like that – because in my life every year seems to have a different flavour, atmosphere... that’s how it is, change is the only constant in this crazy world.

S6 -

ANGSTY ANGSTY ANGST ANGST

Just kidding. This season is truly UNDERRATED. Yes, it's dark. Tragedy happens... IT’S A PART OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE PEOPLE. I will admit that such tragic breakups and occurrences are unlikely to happen all in one go... but it was a rollercoaster... and what a ride it was.
But seriously, I like this season a lot. Some great nerd moments (which got a little annoying later in the season), and genuine emotion gave way for the actors to give us what I believe was, at times, some of their best performances. The musical episode wasn’t the only great ep in the season, there wasn’t any particular episode I would call distinctly ‘bad’, even ‘Doublemeat’ had its moments. I enjoyed Dark Willow, though I did not enjoy seeing a certain character killed. Joss, you scandalous sneak you!

S7 -

It’s big. It’s evil. It’s gonna kill us all!!!!!! Oh no! it’s...... the apocalypse!!!!

Hmm yeah... like we haven’t heard that one before...

Started out promising, with some great ideas – the reopening of the high school, more Xander (at the beginning), Andrew, the potential slayers. That could have been really interesting... But it didn’t quite... get there. Sorry. If it’s any consolation, I haven’t watched it in a while and will soon refresh my dvd collection soon to see if any of my opinions will budge, as they do that sometimes. Sometimes, not a lot.

I liked how at the beginning it seemed as though they were going to have lots of stand-alone episodes as well as the big bad, as if to reflect season one in some way. But then it got all arcy and repetitive and boring. There was Andrew though – he did well, very well.

So, as you can see, I’m huge Buffy fan with too much time their hands. Or... not enough time on their hands with a pesky tendency towards procrastination.

I liked Chosen. I also liked Kennedy. However, I felt Buffy, Willow and Xander were often acting out of character. Admittedly, it has been a while since I watched the season though.

I've been away from the Whedonverse for quite a while. It's been too long, actually... I haven't even seen Dollhouse or read the Buffy comics. Have to get onto that sometime.

Yes, it was a masterfully done ep, yes, it was high art in its way, but for me, it was waaay to close to the bone...
And placing it in a season full of Glory shenanigans just made it that much more unsettling for me.

I hear that. "The Body" was hands down the most painful 5 minutes I have ever seen on screen(tv, or film). I just felt so bad for Buffy. I'm thinking they shouldn't even had a "big bad" in the season. But oh well, that's just me.

Chris said: "And Spike fought for his soul!!!"

I was wondering if you could explain this further. I just finished watching Season 6 and that's not how I interpreted it. I thought Spike left Sunnydale in order to find some way to get the chip out of his head so he could finally kill Buffy and end his emotional turmoil. That is why he went to some evil entity for help. He doesn't say anything about trying to get a soul so that Buffy would finally be able to love/accept him, does he (in season 6)? I don't think he knew the evil entity would decide it was more fun to torment him further by giving him a soul. Am I misinterpreting this?? I know in Season 7, they try to make it look like Spike chose to get his soul, but that feels revisionist to me and doesn't mesh with the reasons he gave for leaving Sunnydale in Season 6... I may have to look up the specific dialogue in Season 6...

Yeah, went to it for the wrong reason, but in fighting for & getting it, he gained grace.

The truth is, Spike left Sunnydale because he thought he was gonna be young Picard...

I ignored the show for the first season and a half, and then one day I was carpooling with a guy who proclaimed he was "now officially addicted to Buffy". I shot him a look, "What, you mean that show they made outta that cheesy movie with PeeWee?"
He gave me that "Awww, Dude! You have no idea!" shake of the head, and proceeded to explain all about which end of the stick Joss had gotten from the Kuzui's & Donald Sutherland.
I just kinda thought "Whatever, man."
The following week I channel-surfed into the middle of "Innocence", and it was the scene where The Judge has just incinerated somebody, and Drusilla is gleefully stomping her foot, "Do it again! Do it again!"
I watched for another five minutes, and I was hooked.

I watched religiously from then until the end of Season 3, but then stopped, because a) nothing could top The Mayor as a Big Bad, and b) I couldn't afford cable anymore.

Poor Anya & Xander, though.

Kennedy is ok in your book..fine. Buffy becomes the super hero she was destined to be. Willow, and Xander play second fiddle to "potential" slayers. What a waste.

Just rewatched the "Bad Girls" episode, and was suddenly reminded why the Mayor was so awesome...

Y'see.... TV just doesn't do this kind of thing anymore. Or at least not with the finesse that Buffy did.

Ho humm....

Best season by miles!

I actually liked the *idea* of the potential slayers. I thought it had.. well, potential. I think they could have had some great scenes with Willow, Xander and Giles training them. It could have been interesting to make Willow and Xander 'authority' figures as well as Buffy. A world of opportunity for humour and character-driven dialogue. Also, it would have been good to draw more on what had happened in the previous seasons. The 'potential slayers' could have been great if the idea was handled better. The characters weren't developed enough for the audience to be able to identify with them, as we had with Buffy, Willow and Xander and Giles before.

What I don't like about the Kennedy thing is that it happened to soon after Tara. Kennedy herself didn't annoy as a character.

---

I recently started watching the motion comics on itunes, but I can't say it 'gets me' like the series did. The actor's voices are too distracting and the drawings don't really look like the actors anyway. I think I'd be better off reading the comic without the voices or even a novel.
