I have a friend who had just seen 'Once More With Feeling' and was curious about Buffy....
so last night we watched the two part first episode of Buffy's Season one...
and then I skipped to 'The Pack' because that was the one I thought had the best metaphor of S1
(plus I love the dodge ball game!)

soooo
should I skip the rest of S1 and go into S2?

or is it that important to see Buffy dying for the first time?

I just don't think it is necessary for this newbie to waste time on EVERY Buffy episode (since she is only coming over once a week to watch at my house)....

what does everyone else think?

The thing is, that with every Joss show, there are so many little things you can miss by skipping just one show. To fully "get" the BtVS experience, I think you must watch every one.

But stop at season 5. Season 6 and 7 were just a waste

Another thing is Joss (Mutant Enemy) weaves details into later eps. For instance, if you miss Out of Sight, Out of Mind, you completey miss a joke or two in later seasons and that happens throughout. Yeah, it's just one little line, but that's part of the soft, chewy center of Buffy. Continuity with a capital "C". IF you skip "Prophecy Girl," how do you explain Kendra? 'Oh, yeah. Buffy died in Season one so another slayer is called.' That's not easy to buy into unless you watched it. And her fear of the Master?

And Nightmares is really good. Willow and Opera.

Some of Season 1 can be hard to watch...more so if you've seen the other seasons. But it's worth it to have the whole story from the get go. And the experience of seeing the show work out the kinks and really hit its stride is pretty cool, too. Trust that the show will work its magic.

I *finally* convinced my big sister to give Buffy a try. She loved Dark Shadows way back when it was on the air (the original vampire soap opera). I took her Seasons 1 & 2 to start on, with the caveat that Season 1 isn't the greatest, but that she should get through it anyway. I assured her that S2 gets tighter and even more fun, but S1 establishes a lot, from the very first scene. And to me, Prophecy Girl just should not be missed. The Master was good rollicking fun, and I just love how everyone keeps telling Buffy, "By the way, I love your dress." Even The Master does it, after he kills her. :)

By the way, my sis just turned 47. I think she'll have a great time with Buffy, even if it is a "teen show". We're still young at heart. :)

Your friend doesn't really have to see EVERY episode of S1... but at some point, she's probably going to want to.

I don't think Seasons 6 & 7 were a waste. By Buffy standards, they might not have been as great as some other seasons, but there was still some great stuff in there. Caleb, anyone?

I'm just moving into season 3 of Buffy, and I have to say that I like that brave, courageous slayer Buffy in every episode that I've seen her in. Matter of fact, I liked every episode so far. Am I to be expecting a bad episode coming up in season 3?

I'd say to get the full effect have your friend watch from "Welcome to the Hellmouth" through to "Chosen." Some say season six and seven were a waste but I actually kind of enjoyed them, not as much as seasons one through five but I did see a place for them in the scheme of things.

well, there's my two cents.

I was new to BtVS a couple of months ago and started watching from S1 and am glad I did. It wouldn't feel right to skim past the creation of the series (everyone making friends, understanding the slayer's responsibilities etc) so I suggest that you let your friend watch everyone.
