One of the things I admire about Joss's work is how far ahead he thinks and plans, things like the inkling in season 2 of where Willow may be heading, 2 seasons further on. So, one thing that has alwasy confused me is why certain questions havent been answered, or perhaps I mean plotlines not explored....

Why was there never any mention of another slayer after Buffy died (again) ? I understand they might not want to explore a plot about it, in the 'been there done that' way, but never to mention it at all? Especially once they start rounding up potentials in the final season, surely it would come up then, that there is a 3rd slayer running around somehwere?

Speaking of which, how come the council knew that Kendra was a potential, (she was given to her watcher to raise as a small child) and yet it got sprung on Buffy with no preperation? I know that kendra's culture "take the calling very seriously" but how did they even know?

I have always wondered about those 2 things. Seems if I lok closely enough, there is a small reference somewhere to any other query I ahve had, except for those...

Spoilers if you are unfamiliar with Buffy!

Well, in the good old days, when a Slayer died, another potential Slayer gets activated as the new Slayer. So when Buffy died the first time, Kendra became the Slayer. When Kendra died, Faith got activated.

I think that Buffy passed it on. Despite the fact that Buffy was brought back to life, I think that she passed on the mantle of Slayer. So, when Buffy died again, nothing. Faith would have to die to get a new Slayer.

I also think that the detection and training of potentials was one of the reasons that there were so many Watchers. It is just that the science of detecting potentials was not exact. They had a bunch of them, perhaps including Kendra, identified. But when Buffy's predecessor died and Buffy went from being Potential to Slayer, it blindsided the Watchers. They had to hunt her down, which they did.

If you take the movie as canon, then it was Donald Sutherland who found her. Otherwise, there is that one guy we saw in... early Angel? When Angel was having a flashback watching Buffy first come into her powers.

I've heard a couple ideas as to why Buffy's second death didn't trigger a new slayer, I think the one thats taken as fact is that when she died the first time, whatever magic is in the slayer that is sent out to activate the next one is a one time thing, so no matter how many times a slayer "dies" she can only activate one other slayer.

The other one I think I read in an alternate version of "chosen" or I may have just made it up or dreamed it or something lol. But that one was that even though Buffy died again in season 5, Dawn was still alive, and since the monks used part of Buffy's essence to make dawn, it was like part of her was still alive, so that didn't trigger another slayer, but again, I think the first explanation is the correct one.

And as for buffy not having a watcher before she was activated, that's just because unfortunately she was one of the hundreds of potentials that hadn't been located by the council yet. I think the council tried to find and train as many potentials as they could, but they couldn't find them all.

"Haha, mine is an evil laugh."

I never understood it myself why it was never explored onscreen but Joss said in an interview before Season 6 that the Slayer line runs through Faith only. Only one replacement per slayer. Kendra was Buffy's, Faith was Kendra's.

"What if you could have the power? Now? In every generation, one Slayer is born...because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule...
So I say we change the rule. I say my power should be our power...
Every girl who could have the power, will have the power. Can stand up, will stand up...
Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?"--Buffy Summers, May 20, 2003
