Gellar Says No to Buffy Return

Sarah Michelle Gellar has further broken the hearts of Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans - she has turned down the chance to recreate her famous TV character in episodes of spin-off series Angel.

Buffy creator Joss Whedon had offered the actress the chance to return to TV in 2004 to play Buffy in two special episodes of Angel, but she has turned him down. A disappointed Whedon says, "She feels it's not the right time."

Did you catch Joss's comment on Serenity about how uncomfortable Nathan was filming the zero-g shots. He said he was "as cranky as a seventh year TV star." Wonder what that could mean?

You know what? Good for her. Buffy is over. She put in her time and did a great job. Let her rest. I would much rather Buffy continue having adventures (or not, depending) off-screen than come back for a weak follow-up. What's going to be said that hasn't been already?

Let Buffy- the character and the actor who played her- rest.

If Buffy came back there would certainly be love-tension between her and Angel and Spike. She would get to thank Spike for saving the world. Who knows what else Joss had in mind, but are you so sure it would be a "weak follow-up?"

This could well be the last season of Angel. I think a Buffy appearance, an Epilogue, would be a nice touch.

Well, she wasn't that good in that show anyways. And Scooby Doo and SNL certainly sucked whenever she was on. Come on! I say let her go and she will sink to the bottom of oblivion.

I don't blame her. If she wants to move on to other things as Charisma Carpenter did, I certainly respect her for that. Yes, I was looking forward to seeing Buffy on Angel and am a bit disappointed, but that's okay.

Let her be done if she wants to be.

sounds good and I certainly respect people's
decisions when they make them intelligently.

But when they flaunt them in a 'oh, I am too
good for you kind of attitude' (and especially
when they aren't really up to that kind of
standards), it truly is a huge insult.

This kind of decision has the true hallmark
of someone else speaking for her - handlers
who don't necessarily have her best interest
in mind, but only her money. People like that
make you sacrifice and kill off your childhood
relationships, your family relationships, and
your real friends. They manipulate you so that
you become wholly dependent on them in that they
can squeeze every last drop of worth out of you.
They don't make you become better, they just control you and make you their puppet until
you rot away.

Give an example, many of SNL's older generation
cast have gone back to the show to cohost and
do a couple of skits even when the show sucked
and they have 'moved on' and become much more
successful.

i was under the impression that Charisma Carpenter was shocked that she 'no longer had a job.' That she really didn't see it coming and was dissappointed that she would no longer be a part of the series. I read something like that in TV Guide, i believe.

Right after I saw the final episode of Buffy, my first thought was "I hope we never see Buffy, Giles, Xander, or Willow again." Their end was so perfect...another appearance couldn't add; only detract.

Even mentioning their names doesn't help. I wish Andrew hadn't given Spike the update about the gang. They're not together anymore? For seven years, they hardly part, and now they're all on separate continents?
Perhaps they were only at their locations temporarily, though.

It sounded more to me like they they were on different continents to recreate the Watchers Council, and train all the new Slayers.

Don't shoot me, I'm just the new guy.

Oh gack! I hope that Buffy doesn't show up on Angel. HATE that character. Bring us somebody else, anybody else from BTVS but her. If it does happen (doesn't look like it will though) I would hope that they would make it have little to no bearing on the plot (like Angel's appearance at the end of Buffy did). Buffy had its swan song. Let Angel have its own.

Wow, we haven't seen this kind of rebellion since Amber Benson said no to her appearance in S7. I never did understand that one.

Is it lack of gratitude? Is it pure artistic belief that the character has run its course? I could go either way, because I miss Giles and Willow way more than Buffy. Strangely, Buffy was never the star of the show for me. It was always the writing and the ensemble. That character was probably the most interchangeable and could have been replaced at the right moment, but which of us could say goodbye to Spike or Giles and not miss them more?

But I have to respectfully disagree with some comments that she didn't do a good job. She may not have the depth of say, yer average Anthony Head or Alexis Denisof, but she walked into a very weird show and made it work as a supposedly empty-headed shallow teenager, who grew up and saved the world.

I {am} sorry to see her floundering in schlock like "Scooby Doo 2". She's better than that. It just illustrates what the non-Whedon entertainment world consists of. It scares me.

Hmmm..To me SMG IS Buffy Summers. I thought she was amazing and perfect as Buffy. When I see her picture in a magazine or on E! I think 'hey look...its Buffy!' Not only would I enjoy seeing Buffy on Angel but I think it is very important for the buffyverse mythology. As I watched my Buffy and Angel DVD's I couldnt say that she was my favorite charecter because for me that kept changing from Giles to Angel to Willow to Wesly to Cordy to Xander and so on, but when I look at the mass of work I think that Buffy makes you believe. Buffy pulls it all together. Buffy is the reason.

My 2 cents

i have to agree with you. sarah michelle gellar did an amazing job with buffy, and i challenge anyone to tell me she cant act. she turned what kirsty swanson ruined into a multi dimensional living breathing super hero. a woman who will forever live on within the media and tv cult groups and thats the way it should be!

I believe Amber chose not to return because they only wanted her for 'Conversations with Dead People', as FirstEvilTara, and she felt that having the character return just to be evil wasn't something she wanted to be involved in. Fair enough.

Further, I gather Joss retaliated with a (presumably tongue-in-cheek) claim that he'd planned for a big Willow/Tara happy-ever-after reunion.

I also read that at least part of the reason she didn't do a guest appearance was that she went to film 'The Grudge' in Japan. She offered to do the finale of Angel, but Joss felt having Buffy would detract from Angel being its own show.
