Was just watching REAL ME (episode 2 of season 5) and noticed that one of Harmony's minions was in actual fact Actor Tom Lenk, who later appears throughout seasons 6 adn 7 as Human Nerd Andrew.

How come there was this minor role in season five?

Explanations welcome!

Joss enjoys using the same actors over and over. He calls him his "hattricks". And they don't always get to play big roles, I would guess.

Like Willow's warlock enabler in season six was also the insane vampire Krychek in "Helpless" from season three.

And Luke from the pilot was also The Judge in season two.

He also switches from show to show like with Jonathan Woodward who was Tracey in The Message and is now playing Knox on Angel.

Oh and the guy who played Dobson was a demon in the Buffy season three premiere "Anne". He was on Angel too if I not mistaken but I can't remember which episode.

Then there's of course the fact that Gina and Nathan have been on Angel and Buffy respectively.

It's just something Joss does.

Well, it's not necessarily something he "likes" to do, it just happens. Casting the same actor in different roles on different shows is very different than different roles on the same show. Though of course with Angel being in the same universe as Buffy, it's a little trickier to define there. It happens with non-Joss shows too... just the Hollywood TV pool recycling a bit. Note that none of the people who played more than one role on Buffy had large roles (more than 2 eps) more than once. You'll also never see somebody who played a large role coming back in a small role, since they'd be too recognizable. Though of course to fans the minor people are recognizable too. :)

As for "hattricks," Joss is specifically referring to actors who've been in all three of his shows (hence the term, usually denoting scoring three goals in one game in hockey or soccer). Without counting stunt-people and extras, I think the list is: Jonathan M. Woodward as Tracey in FF, Holden in Buffy, and Knox on Angel; Carlos Jacott as Dobson in FF, Ken in Buffy, Richard in Angel; Andy Umberger as Dortmunder Captain in FF, D'Hoffryn in Buffy, and Dr. Meltzer in Angel; and Jeff Ricketts as Blue Hand Guy #1 in FF, Weatherby in both Buffy and Angel, and Spider Monster in Angel. Those last two I only figured out from the FF commentaries, so there might be more.

"Tom Lenk plays one of Harmony's minions in this episode. He impressed Buffy execs so much that he was brought back as nerd Andrew in Season Six."

Brian Thompson's been in soooooo much stuff. My husband and I have an ongoing game. Whenever we watch something, whoever spots Thompson first get's a....um, treat. heh.

I'm still waitin' for the rest of the old Kindred cast to show up on Angel. We've seen four of them so far on either Buffy or Angel, including Thompson and Kober. No, I won't hold my breath for Mark Frankel, goddess keep his soul till he returns to us... Would be a wacky trick, though.

Thought I read an online interview with Lenk saying that he just auditioned again for the Andrew role ... It's not like he was such a comic powerhouse that Buffy execs tracked him down.

Q: How did you get involved in Buffy? Were you a fan of the show before you joined?

Tom Lenk: It was the normal way of things in television - auditions, I actually played a vampire during season five, and that was in full make up so I was able to audition later for this role, and I got it!

and spikes crush elizabeth when he was human was played by the same actress who plays halfreck so they decided to tie the two ends together with a throw away comment in 'entropy' which only hardcore fans would pick up on, love the little touches made by joss and the gang, they are like little rays of sunshine only...well not.:)

I got that, but I fully noticed it because they mention it in a commentary. They mention the comment, though, just that it's the same actress.
