Some friends of mine have had an ongoing discussion about Spikes intentions with the demon in the cave who gave him back his soul. Basically, there are two camps in this discussion.

Camp 1: Spike went to the demon seeking his soul. All of the "So that bitch will get what she deserves" was just to throw us off the scent.

Camp 2: Spike went to get his chip out so that he could be all monster again and maybe get Buffy out of his system. (we already know he doesn't need the chip out to try and beat her up.) Giving his soul back was a lesson to be very specific in your wishes. Meaning, all spike asked was to be the way he was before, and was not specific about a time frame.

I'll throw the discussion out there to crowd. what are your thoughts? Did he want his soul back? or did the demon just have a sense of humor?

Well, "Give that bitch what she deserves" is pretty lame misdirection. But it makes more sense than "speak clearly". I can't believe that the deal was "pass my ordeal and I'll grant you a wish."

As long as he doesn't go back to writing bad poetry!

Was I the only one who saw this coming? I mean everyone knows since The Wish - BE SPECIFIC!! I was just waiting for Spike to be re-souled like a bad pair of Birks.

I'm just waiting for the return of some bloody awful poetry :)

Jane Espenson said in her interview with the Succubus Club that is was written that Spike went to get his soul back, but that it was acted and directed that he went to get his chip out and made a mistake in wording. I like the latter.

Spike and Buffy are perfect for eachother... even when you go back and watch season 2 episodes, you realize this. Then Fool For Love came on and I thought "Holy God! William is perfect for Buffy too!"

Anyway... the way I see it is that Spike will be more human than even Angel. Angel still has to deal with the demon inside, and having the desire and ability to feed, but he knows it's wrong... it's all part of his torment. Spike, however, is still chipped. The chip killed the demon in him, but he still had no soul and therefore no humanity. So... chip kills demon, soul gives humanity... we have a Spike who is more human than Angel... not nearly as tormented, either. So, we have a human-ish Spike with the ability to kick demon ass. Sounds perfect... we get human spike, and we still get superpowered spike.

/me sits back and waits for him to be brutally murdered in front of the woman he loves.

I saw this coming as well, and was not surprised by the plot twist. But I am convinced that he is fully human now, not a vampire with a soul and chip. I think this for 2 reasons. Spike wanted to be the way he was before. He was never a vampire with a soul, but he was a human. Secondly, I think Angel is supposed to be the only vampire with a soul. There are prophesies mentioned in the show that talk about a vampire with a soul, and I don't they were referring to Spike. I think Angel is unique, and the writers would not make another Angel.

Why would you think that Angel is supposed to be the only vampire with a soul? How do you know that the prophesies don't refer to Spike? Spike could do something so massively redeeming that he gets his humanity returned (the prophecies in Angel said that "A vampire with a soul will have his humanity returned" (or something like that), so they could either be referring to Angel or Spike)

The prophecy now leaves open ends... and potential for a happy ending on Buffy that doesn't involve Angel (I hate the Buffy/Angel relationship, BTW, and think that Spike/William is much better for Buffy.)

That makes a lot of sense. And while Spike (William) was human, wasn't he rather pathetic? He was ridiculed to no end. Men looked down at him. Heck, women looked down at him. The guy was a crybaby who wrote bad poetry.

I can see the final season with William walking a road from humiliation, to hope, to redemption. Then again, this is Buffy. There are no happy endings.

I think that when Spike is revealed next season, weather he be human or just soulful, he will be different from the personalities that we've all seen. He's no longer just William or just Spike. I think he'll be a mix of them both. He'll have the experience of being pure evil and also of pure good. Maybe he'll be good like William but with a bit more attitude and bravery. Not only that but Spike is the most human vamp we've seen. I don't think that just because he has a soul now, that Spike is completely gone. Since both the soul and the demon don't want to hurt Buffy and Dawn, then it's possible that the demon could get along with William enough that he's not constantly trying to surpress what the demon wants. For example: Angel might always have to deal with hearing his demon say how it wants to kill Angel's friend's. Since Spike doesn't hate Buffy but infact loves her, then it'll be less tormenting.
Just a little something to whet your Buffy/William appetite, I remember hearing Buffy say that she LOVES poetry but doesn't have time for it. Maybe she will now.

PS I think James should sing on the show. He's got a heavenly voice.

I agree with you completely. Angel already has a soul. That makes fullfillment of the propheticies much simplier if they refer to Angel. Since there is no benifit to having a second vamp-with-soul, it has always seem much easier, and much more entertaining to have Spike become William. He has been behaving more and more like a normal human-with-soul, so it is just a small jump to becoming fully human.
Besides, it would be much more interesting for Spike/William to face Angle as a normal mortal with no demonic hangups. Now William could go after Buffy and make her happy the way she deserves. Of couse, a weak human William had better be careful because Angle won't be happy at all.
