“I love spaceships,” Whedon said. “I love sci-fi. I love hard-science sci-fi. I wanted to do a show without latex. I wanted to come back down to Earth and do a western. I wanted to make STAGECOACH really bad and that was the impetus. [I don’t think] there will be aliens three or four hundred years from now [when FIREFLY is set]. There would just be people, and that’s the point. They’re not smarter, they’re not better. War hasn’t been abolished. Some of them are decent, some of them aren’t. Some are just trying to scrape by after being trodden on by history. … It’s a very low-tech show. It’s a sort of immigrant story, taking from all the cultures we already have and imagining them spread out over a galaxy.”

So... I've been thinking over the basis of the series: using the past to relate to future society.

What I've become increasingly concerned about is Joss's research into a realistic social climate of a society 400 years in the future, and how thorough said research has been. *Major* changes in society are not only likely, they are guaranteed. This concern is relevant in that it seems as though the story of Firefly will be based more on society than on the epic space stories prominent in most (all?) science fiction. It's vital to understand what a society 400 in the future will look like to develop a viable vision.

I don't know why I haven't worried about this with any other sci-fi I've seen... but for some reason, I want Firefly to be as realistic as humanly possible. To date, a viable vision of future society has yet to have been developed in modern entertainment, and I sorta want Joss to be the first.

At the moment, I'm not feeling that with Firefly. I just can't imagine people 400 years from now dressing up like cowboys. Besides the purely American fashion statement, there are numerous other things in Firefly that needs to be explained to create a realistic vision of the future.

Most obvious of which is how does everyone get around the galaxy? What is the primary source of power? What is the monetary standard (if there is one), etc. etc.. So until those and many other questions get answered somewhat, Firefly remains a science fantasy series as opposed to a science fiction series. Don't get me wrong, science fantasy is fine with me as long as it adheres to its own logic and be consistent with it.

Would you consider Star Trek "science fantasy?" I'm leaning toward the yes side... because, while it does somewhat realisticly tackle technological aspects of future society, the little ground-based society that is explored is not much different from now. This leads me to believe it's a fantastic portrayal of society in the future, not to mention the existance of alien life being so abundant in the ST universe.

Sure, a lot of the technological developments are very intriguing in science fiction, but I'd much rather be submersed in the society. I want to know the complexities of inter-personal relationships that will be so different than they are today. I want to know how technology is helping/hindering humanity's ancient urges and the flow of evolution. This is an arena that has only been tackled in science fiction literature (Brave New World springs to mind)... and even rarely there. I care about technological accuracy as much as any science fiction fan, but societal accuracy is equally as important, and regretably, rarely even researched.

But, yes... I agree. If it ends up as a science fantasy, as long as it has an internal logic, I will be more than satisfied.

Dylan wonders if he's taking science fiction too seriously
