I know we talked about Buffy's new job in another thread, but I don't remember which thread, so I'm starting over. hehe.

Here is a thought I had:

Other slayers have lived that were not living at home with their parents. How did the rest of them support themselves? Did the council pay their bills? or at least put them up somewhere?

At the end of S5, Giles was supposedly reinstated with full pay to the coucil. And at the time, I thought that meant Buffy was rejoining the council as well. But after they handed off their information on Glory, they were never heard from again.

So what's up? How did other slayers live? How was Faith paying for the hotel she was living in before she went to jail, and before she became kept by the Mayor?

I was all ... dead and frugal.

So I'm thinking that the reason the Watcher is paid is to support his slayer. Since Giles isn't there anymore, The Council should be at least funneling a *little* money into Buffy's pocket.

That bring up another problem I'm having... how can Giles, Buffy's official Watcher, leave Buffy alone? I mean, surely The Council would have a bit of an issue with that...

As for what I think Buffy's job should be, I want her to become a firefighter. There's a lot of down time for a firefighter... enough for Buffy to patrol, and I'm certain that most Sunnydale fires are caused by some sort of demonic activity.

I think maybe this is one of those issues we shouldn't think to much about, like why Angel doesn't use blackout curtains, and why Maggie has time to teach Freshman Psych.

Anyway, I think we can assume that most Slayers don't live long enough for employment to become an issue.

Oops, did I just contradict myself?

I hope we'll see what's become of The Council next year, or on Ripper. I always love a little insight into the CoW -- Checkpoint is one of my favs.

It's been hinted in Grave and others that they're already breaking down (into lunacy, as seen in FRAY). Their resources are shriveling up -- they never bothered to assign the Buffster a new watcher when G-Man left. And Faith's in jail. For the first time, they have no slayer under their control.

They may not even have the money to pay Buffy for her services. But if they did, I doubt she would accept. She doesn't trust the Council and wouldn't put herself in a position of dependency.

And I loved the powerful anti-patriarchal statement of Helpless and Checkpoint; the writers shouldn't tamper with that.

I could be wrong, as what I think happened was a season or two ago, but doesn't Buffy not need a watcher anymore?

Like, after she went through that trial (the one where she lost her powers), she's loose and free, with Giles only there out of affection for her?

I could definitely be wrong.

The Watchers should most certainly be funnelling slayers money, considering the occupation eats up a lot of one's spare time, leaving time for school and career advancement extremely limited.

As far as what Buffy should do, I've always been a strong proponent for higher education, and I'm still holding out for her to finish school... then she can be Officer Buffy all she wants.

But that might just be me...

Wes was assigned as Buffy's watcher after the events of Helpless, so she wasn't free of CoW by passing (though she would later quit, anyway). I don't recall what exactly was the goal of the test.

BUFFY is about growth. But it won't be on for long, so the process has to be accelerated. Buffy in college. Done. Buffy gets a 'daughter.' Done. Now ... Buffy in the workforce.

During season 4, a friend of mine (who refuses to watch the show) mocked me ... "BUFFY: The College Years? Is Screech her roomie?" He still says it now. I'm like, "Dude, there's only 1 character still in college right now."

Giles is then re-instated as Buffy's watcher when the council comes back to Sunnydale to deliver information on Glory with full retro-active pay for the year he was unemployed. This happens in Checkpoint (my favorite Anya scenes are in this episode).

Yeah, I'm with you. I've seen this episode several times, and I still don't remember the point. Maybe there wasn't one. Maybe it's like Giles said, it's an archaic ritual.

As for Buffy, The College Years, I will admit that I used to mock my Buffy watching friends mercilessly. I would say "the movie was ok, but come on, a weekly show? You’ve GOT to be kidding me." I couldn't believe that people who I thought of as intelligent and interesting people would watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But it only took one episode to convert me. And now I'm a bigger freak about the show then the friends who introduced me to it. There's still time to convert your friend.
