Being a supporter of P2P technologies, I was wondering what your thoughts are on using something like BitTorrent to distribute fan vids on FFF.NET. Instead of FFF.NET hosting the fan vids themselves, FFF.NET will serve as a tracker instead. Any thoughts?

I am also big on the P2P technologies.

One problem I can see is that BitTorrent works best when there is a big demand at one point in time (like when the ComicCon teaser came out, etc.) If there was like a featured fan vid of the week, it might work out, but if you want it to serve as more of a long-term storage & bandwidth savings, it's not as good because people aren't likely to let their seeds run for long periods of time.

I'll most likely keep a seed on FFF.NET. The biggest headache I have now with hosting fan vids is automating the process.

Due to the large size of the files involved, I don't have a reliable way for people to upload other than through FTP. And once uploaded, I have no way of getting it automatically posted to the site.

It's not very elegant, but I've played with the idea of writing a little program that would scan the FTP directory for new files and along with the help of a description file that the poster also uploads, have the program automatically posts the file to the site.

While it might work, it doesn't help with the bandwidth problem at all.

Featured vid of the week is a good idea, and there are plenty of Browncoats here I think who would be willing to help you seed the torrents, perhaps two or three individuals per torrent, to assist FFF.net, we may be able to work out a rotation. I know it’s far fetched, but I am more then willing to volunteer.

I like this idea

I'd also be willing to provide long term seeding for a few torrents (I have a server ).

The way I would work it is the way Haken suggested.

Someone uploads a torrent and seeds it. There are loads of torrent sites that would be able to help with the code to automatically put up a torrent.

Then at Haken's leisure, he can start the torrent to have a seed on FFF.net.

A vid of the week (mentioned above) is also a good idea

As a vidder and a HUGE P2P fan (BitTorrent and Limewire mainly), I am very interested in this.

I saw a lot of vids on the thread, and if the actual vidder could be notified of when his/her vid is featured, then they may be able to keep anohter torrent open as well. I know I usually leave mine open till I have uploaded 2-2.5 times what I have gotten (doing my part to negate the leechers!).

Whatever you decide, just make sure we vidders know. Thanks for the opportunity to spread my obsession(s)!
