Who here mainly likes Buffy season 1 - 3,
Who here likes S1 - S5,
who will go to S6,
and who stands with S1 - S7?
(I'm assuming no one just likes, say, S5 - S7... but correct me if I'm wrong)

I like them all, but am of the opinion that (akin to the Star Trek movies) the even-numbered ones are best. I like seasons 2, 4, and 6 best, followed by 3 and 5, with 1 and 7 rounding out the rear.

I'm in the 3-platform group: S1-5, S6, S7
S6 had enough good moments that it can't be relegated to the S7 dumpster, but any season containing Doublemeat Palace and Smashed/Wrecked can't be grouped with the top of the order.

I think Smashed/Wrecked have an unfair reputation. I agree that the Willow drug addiction storyline was too heavy-handed, but the Buffy/Spike/Trio scenes from those episodes are brilliant!

I can offer no defence for Doublemeat Palace though!

Second group. 1-5. Won't get into my thoughts on 6 and 7.

Have you started Season 5 yet?

To be truthful, I want to re-purchase S1 And S2 (used, of course; as you might know, I sold them to get S3, then just couldn't part w/3) then get S5. Finances a littly dodgey right now, but it'll happen.

Looks like it'll take a while if you're going to rebuy 1 and 2 first. What about 4?

I'll try and be patient : )

LOVOK

Here's how I'd rank the seasons:

I like S2, S3, S5, and S6 about equally as much.
A notch lower is S4, then another notch lower is S7, then a chunk lower is S1.

The top seasons...
S2 - The best arc episodes in the series. The show at its emotional highpoint with eps like "Innocence," "Passion," and "Becoming." There were a lot of stand alone duds in here too though.

S3 - The most consistent season. This season was great from start to finish. This is definately the "best" season even though it's not my "favorite" season.

S5 - I love this season. I feel it's a mix between S2's emotional high and S3's strong arc. I thought the Dawn storyline was clever and innovative, and I love how much character development happened this season.

S6 - I call this season depressingly addictive. I know it's not for everyone, but I find myself re-watching eps from this season the most. There is just so much emotion in here, I just eat it up. Smashed isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, and aside from the terrible druggy scene in Wrecked, that episode isn't bad either. Even Doublemeat Palace isn't AS bad as people say. There's stuff to like there. From "Afterlife" to "Once More, With Feeling" to "Dead Things" to "Seeing Red" to the final 3 eps, this season has a ton to relish.

A notch down...
S4 - The main arc was weak. That's the #1 problem with this season. Aside from that, this season rocks. There lots of really funny and exciting stuff here from "Pangs" to "Something Blue" to "Hush" to "This Year's Girl/Who Are You" to "Primeval" to "Restless."

Another notch down...
S7 - This season is NOT worse than S1. This season is NOT terrible. Yes, there are a lot more flaws in this season than any other season, but there's still whole lot of great stuff in here. The tops are "Lessons," and "Selfless," and "Conversations With Dead People," and "Storyteller," and "Chosen." I agree that as the final season it's a bit of a disappointment, but there's still a whole lot to like. Maybe watching it quickly on DVD makes it better (this is the only way I watched it)?

A chunk down...
S1 - This season has a bunch of just plain bad episodes. The basic dialog is starting to form and get interesting, and you get to know the characters, but the eps are generally quite boring. The music in this season is terrible, and the special effects were in need of serious help (which they got in S2 thankfully). Though it's the worst season, there's still some great stuff. The pilot is decent with a handful of hilarious lines, and the last 4 eps keep getting better until the great "Prophecy Girl" caps the season off.

It was different and exciting (and I watched a lot of eps more than once), but ultimatly I don't think I'll re-purchase that one (I sold it and a couple movies to get the new Galactica set from Best Buy), I mean, unless S5 sinks it's teeth into me big time...

Damn, I keep thinkin' I should maybe just sell a LOT of my junk and get the mega-set due out in November!!!

2 and 5 are actually my favorite - I feel they most closely touch on the show's overarcing themes, and have similar stories for Buffy, the story I find most compelling. Some of the details were off, and the pacing wasn't wonderful, but the story is my favorite.

Plus Spike is hysterical in 5th season, some of the best moments in the show.

Actually, I'm choosing which dvd's to sell next; S5 is in my target hairs! I'll have it before the BDM.

I will attempt to purchase Seasons 1, 2, and 4 later...

As of right now, I have no plans on S6 or S7, but never say never!

wow that's a long link. Anyway... most Buffy and Angel seasons are 30.99-34.99, which are really good prices.

Yeah, 3 is the best (IMO). You're already pulled in because of the end of S2. And then it takes off from there and just doesn't stop. 3 is a well-oiled machine, all aspects of BUFFY come togther in a cohesive way that pushes the arc all the way through episode 22.

"Gingerbread" is the only weak spot for me and it's okay. Plus it created the ratification of Amy and thus more BUFFY lore.

Love them all!

Fave seasons of BTVS:
2-5
these eps played best episodically (watched week-to-week) AND worked well within their season long themes/big bads.

Neither 6 nor 7 worked so well episodically for some reason but both seasons seem to work better when watched in marathon sessions (on dvd). Seasons 6 and 7 each have their own fantastic episodes that you can't help but love (and belong in the top 10 or 20 of all time best Mutant Enemy accomplishments):

Once More with Feeling,
the return of Faith arch,
Conversations with Dead People,
Lies My Parents Told Me

just to name a few.
