WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The White House is not amused by The Onion, a newspaper that often spoofs the Bush administration, and has asked it to stop using the presidential seal on its Web site.

The seal was still on the Web site www.theonion.com on Tuesday at the spot where President George W. Bush's weekly radio address is parodied.

With headlines like "Bush To Appoint Someone To Be In Charge Of Country" and "Bush Subconsciously Sizes Up Spain For Invasion," The Onion is popular with readers looking for a little laughter with their politics.

White House spokesman Trent Duffy said people who work in the executive mansion do have a sense of humor, but not when it comes to breaking regulations.

"When any official sign or seal is being used inappropriately the party is notified," Duffy said.

"You cannot pick and choose where to enforce that rule. It's important that the seal or any White House insignia not be used inappropriately," he said.

Duffy said while he does not personally read The Onion, he admitted knowing others in the White House who do. "Like everyone else, we like a good laugh."

Scott Dikkers, editor-in-chief of the satirical newspaper, said its lawyer disagrees with the White House assessment.

"I've been seeing the presidential seal used in comedy programs most of my life and to my knowledge none of them have been asked not to use it by the White House," Dikkers said.

"I would advise them to look for that other guy Osama (bin Laden) ... rather than comedians. I don't think we pose much of a threat," Dikkers said.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Perhpas The Onion will spoof this particular "request"? I can only hope! BTW- If you like humor with your politics, you should listen to Stephanie Miller on AM radio. What a hoot!!!

Please don't think they give a shit.

Where's this 'blaming al Qaeda' part of the story ? I'm not seeing it in the post. Seems like thee's no 'there' there with this story. The W.H. simply asked them to not use the official seal. They can ask, and that seems reasonable enough. Doesn't mean The Onion has to comply, from how I read the story. But there's no blame here, so I'm at a loss of why this story was even posted in the 1st place.

Isn't it obvious? I don't agree with a neocon opinion. Therefore I hate freedom, apple pie and mom.

If you don't see why this is hysterical, take your sense of humor in for servicing. It is in dire need of maintenance.

You're special. You're a unique and beautiful snowflake, Hardware.

And what you think is funny is hysterical. It really is.

And I understand why you like your dogs more than people. I really do.

so you're saying that a Republican can't have a sense of humor? I find that the onion is funny sometimes, but tends to lean a lot to the left for my tastes. But I like Lewis Black. He leans to the left. Hmm. Maybe just because someone doesn't find the Onion funny, doesn't mean that they don't have a sense of humor.

Also? Made no mention of them asking the Onion to stop writing, just the seal thing.

Also? I think people would have hated anyone else in office during these past two administrations. For whatever reason. When the next president, which will be, I fear, a far left-leaning pinko commie fag, runs the country even further into the ground with it's extremist Democratic policies, maybe we'll get our act together and nominate some gorram moderates for president.

Never said that. Besides, it doesn't follow. Not all Republicans are neocons.

It does seem however, that the current bunch of ******* (Opinion edited to avoid legal entanglements. Let's just call them bastards.) to inhabit the White House don't like it when people disagree with them. To the point of hilarity in asking a comedy group to not use a public symbol. I haven't heard the White House asking Saturday Night Live to stop using the seal. Maybe because Will Farrel left. Nobody does a shrub like Farrel.

I don't find this remotely funny, and my humor is just fine. Some things just aren't funny. That you hate freedom, apple pie and mom might be more telling than anything.

I seen him talkin' all nice to his ma, and stealin' pie right off her plate; I'm of a mind he was kiddin', is all.

But he wears handcuffs a lot, so he's probably serious about hatin' freedom an' such.
(BTW, Freedom is a Yang worship word, you will not speak it!)

I just checked out this Onion business. Funny? generally no. The story on the 'Puppy Dies Adorable Death' was funny. The rest...not so much.

As a Republican and a prosecutor and a volunteer for my Mayor's reelection campaign, I find that I have a very good sense of humor. I laugh daily at the latest crazy antics by those zaney liberals. I chuckle softly at my Mayor's campaign managers strategy to have us personally call every undecided voter in the City and convince them to vote for the person running againt us by annoying the hell out of them. As a prosecutor I find myself laughing every day at the people I send to jail. Had this guy yesterday, I convinced his attorney that we'd already spoken about the case a week or so ago and he'd already agreed to plead his client and send him to jail, even though it was our first pre-trial and I'd only just looked at the case for the first time some minutes before. Guy went to jail, even cried a bit. Can't tell me thats not funny.

Wasn't anything unethical about my behaivor. The Defense Attorney...perhaps. I note for the record that the Defendant was guilty, else he never would have pled so, and got a just sentence based almost entirely on his prior record of similar offenses.

Today had a real ethical problem. A translator was acting as an advocate and adivising the Defendant. This interfered with the Public Defender's ability to represent the client. An unethical prosecutor would have taken the deal offered by the translator and gone round the PD. Instead I called the problem to the PD's and Court's attention and had the translator admonished on the record. Now instead of resolving today, the case, with the same deal, will be resolved with the PD in a week or two.
