I'm curious, are you just gathering information for your own enlightenment, or do you actually plan on doing something with the results?

I read fanfic on PDAs. the black and white old ones with background light and exchangeable batteries (rechargable of course) are the best for this. but not the older Palms because they only have 160x160 pixels and that's no good for reading texts.

you can read with a PDA in your bed while your spouse is sleeping because of the backlight you wouldn't need any lights on. and it's very easy on the eyes, at least on my eyes. and when the power runs out you switch the batteries and go for another few hours.

I used my old Psion 5MX for reading (lasts 10h on one set of batteries)and now I use a Sony Clie SL10 (lasts 5h with the smaller batteries and it's lighter and more convenient to hold). the SL10 should be easy to get (eBay?) and cheap and you only need a small memory stick (or a larger one if you want to keep lots of fanfic on it) and the freeware version of Mobipocket Reader. and a tool for converting .txt to PalmDoc or Mobipocket format on the PC. there are several, some are like text editors others simply convert the copy-paste-buffer to a file and they are all free.

so just copy-paste (shortcut whatever) the fanfic and hotsync/beam whatever to your PDA. much nicer reading than on a PC monitor and no paper involved.

Well, mostly it was for my own purposes. To see who was reading what, and why. But maybe when I have time, I can compile some of the general data and rank answers... I'm not much of a maths person, but it could prove kidna interesting.

I format my fic online at 600 pixels wide, dark text on a light background because that's basically the layout for a standard 8.5x11" printed page. Tho I admit, when I'm reading anything longer than 10,000 words, I usually pull it over into Word to print it out in 2 magazine collumns, at 8pt Verdana (so each page is equivalent to about 1 paperback page--and san-serif fonts are easier by far to read at that size than a serifed font like Times).

I don't do Palms :) I like full-screen, or paper.

I usually read anything short of a novel (50,000 words) online--I used to print everything out, but I've grown accostumed to reading on-line now, tho if I'm editing, I'll usually print out hard copy. It just makes it easier.
