ok, i've decided to take the plot idea i have in mind, and run with it and write my own story. But i've a problem, i still have a few things i'm not sure of. i know the story is going to be a river/kaylie pairing, or a river/inara pairing, but i'm not sure which(hint for you to post which you like more). And i'm having a bit of trouble starting the story out, thats always been my weak point. i'm great at writing sudden twists and being sneaky, or making you bawl your eyes out because i've done something terrible to the characters. But i'm not sure of an opening(i'll take advice on that too by the way). So, any help i can get, i'll be happy for.All i know so far, is that the story will start out in Rivers point of view, told in third person most likely.

I can't help you with the pairings because I am not into slash and neither couple appeals to me, but the best way to get the voices correct is to listen to the DVD's over and over again.

You should choose the pairing that really means something to you. It will be easier to write than to choosing one to satisfy others.

I've found that the first 6 pages are usually the hardest to write, then after that everything flows. I can only tell you what I do when writing, and that is to just do it. The odd thing I do, is that each time I open the document I started working on the story from beginning, changing a word here, rewriting a sentance, adding something that really needs to be said. Often it grows from the top and middle instead of the end.

Thank goodness for cut and paste! I can't tell you how many times I've moved whole sections around, once things get moving.

Good luck, hope you get it figure out.

My advice is to start writing the scenes you know. And LittleLady is right - choose the pairing you like, and the characters you know best. You'll please readers by writing what you like rather than what you think they'll like.

The opening is hugely important, but if you sit around waiting for the perfect first sentence, you won't get much done. So write what you know, and jot down any rough beginning that seems possible to work. You'll change it and redo it 1000 times, but finally you'll end up with something that fits the rest of the story.

I must admit, I believe in getting my fic (or at least a lot of it) done before I start posting. That's just me - but it does make for better continuity and gives you time to work out a beginning that will fit the action that comes later.

Good luck!
