how do different writers/rpgers (hell just daydreamers!) approach scale??

what is mean is - the series FireFly and the movie Serenity are very different in scale (thanks to budget and length) and this dramatically alters the tone of a piece...

in your fics (or thinkings) how do you deal with this?

in trying to link F.F to BDM for example in Words on the Wing, i attempted to build from the initimate (show like) to the more adventure orientated and filmic... (tho i still had fun going "ok Jane Espenson in writing pt 4 - tim minear is doing pt 3" call me sad!) now the rub...

post BDM in our pretty little heads - aim for the epic?? or not?? the same problem holds for Joss himself with Buffy8... you risk losing the flavour of the source...
my headgame is to mentally imagine a series of straight to dvd mini movies in chapters...
(less money than BDM more than F.F.)

which could allow for tonal shifts reflecting writing styles - and just the basic need to combine forms and styles (which they could do for real ala Conversations with Dead People in Buffy7).

reading the fics here i notice a wide range from the domestic/intimate to the epic...

which captures the elusive browncoat atmosphere we crave?

does it matter? should i have mal save the universe every week?
or just concentrate on those special moments across the serenity dining room?

maybe this is a bit vague but... reading a few thoughts would help me structure things...

thanks to anyone who reads this far!

Just my two cents...

What most people love about Firefly is the characters. Yes, the plots are great and the 'verse is a really interesting place to play, but the working-class crew of Serenity is what draws Browncoats in.

I'd suggest not saving the universe every story. When it is about saving the universe, keep the focus personal, not epic. Even in the BDM, most of the movie was about Mal & co. trying to just survive the storm they found themselves in. Saving the universe wasn't even a consideration until the last act. When the switch happened, in Mal's "St. Crispin's day" speech, the fact that you knew the characters as people made it all the more epic and heroic.
