Or seen another way, the EU has every right to be hard on the US if the US gets itself involved in an unnecessary war and it isn't able to spend its resources in areas where they're needed more.

And things aren't getting better, what with the US wanting to install missile-intercept systems in the Czech Republic, and Russia saying that they will respond not diplomatically, but militarily, to any such threat. If they hold to that, then there's every likelihood that the EU could get sucked into the middle of yet another shooting war.

Sadly, I think that this is exactly the kind of thing Bush WANTS - for everyone to be at war with everyone else!

While Yurp/Med had the strongest economies, I've heard of the Spanish Empire, the British Empire, the French Empire, the Third Reich, Greek Empire, Roman Empire, Franco-Russian War, and something called The War To End All Wars, and the sequel, WWII, not to mention the Yugoslavs can't wait to kill each other all over again.

Then, following WWII, the U.S. became the world economic power, and the world babysitter.
Vietnam (vs USSR/China), Korea (vs USSR/China), and now sprouting peaceful allegiances in the Mideast, don't really compare the the carnage wrought when Yurp/Med is the econimic power.

Now the EU is returning the world's economic power to Yurp.

Is there some reason we like to bash the French?

Wasn't their support critical for winning our war of Independence against the British?

Weren't French citizens fighting in resistance cells helpful towards recapturing France from their occupiers during WWII?

I can't remember what the French did, exactly, that should encourage us to hold such enmity against them?

the problem with the e.u. is that it is very similar to the u.n with a group of disparate nations held together by not much apart from economic intrests .i think youll find that if sarcozy would have been in power at the time of the iraq war france would have been involved.plus the french helped america in the war of independence not for truly altruistic reasons as disposeing of the british opened up a huge market for france which then had no tariffs to pay on imports.the french have a worse history than british for tyranny against other countries Algeria anyone

AnthonyT, the French speak a horrible language in which they mispronounce one half of a word and don't pronounce the other half, they gesticulate wildly during their ostentatious conversations and their idea of a meal is bread with a choice of 50 different sorts of cheese, eaten over a period of several hours while talking about nothing and being incredibly pretentious while doing so.

They also had the nerve to make Americans call freedom fries "French fries", but this is one horrible mistake that the law-giver corrected.

Everyone mocks the French, hell, even the FRENCH mock the French...

That bein said, they've been fairly decent allies even when their country was half conquered, sent the Legion to assist us in WWI, helped us fight for our own *WITHOUT* immediately maneuvering us into a position for them to take over during the Revolution....

And they built, and sent us, the Statue of Liberty, an American Icon that (in theory) defines all that we are, and is placed prominently in our culture forevermore.

Yes, the Statue of Liberty is, essentially, a French chick holding Americas ideals in her hands to display them to all the world as something to be prideful, and respectful, of.

NEVER forget that.

That all bein said, I still mock the French, cause they're like Americas weird, geeky little brother, you can't not do it.

I also point out that they have been, in the past 200 or so years, a bit smarter than us - they lopped off the heads of *their* imperialistic, neocon elites, and for many years thereafter, did not have to deal with the problems the bastards have caused us during the same time period.
