I'm new here, so forgive me if this subject has already been visited, but I would love to bounce a theory off of you.

Perhaps Book is not a spy or a great man the BS Corp is indebted to, but royalty traveling incognito?

The last emperor of China was hidden away in a private city for most of his life. What if Book is one of the last of a former royal family of some planet kept away in a private city for most of his life by the Bluehands?

He is obviously not actually a Shepherd, but his dismay at the way of the word and his feeling of being lost are so geniune. He seems like a prince in disguise - learning about the world.

Interesting theory... but it doesn't hold up. First of all, you've got his age. Second, River's visions from Objects In Space had jer seeing people saying things that they'd said in the past, for example Jayne saying "I got stupid, the money was too good." Book was in a position of judge, jurry, and executioner that was respected by the Alliance. He's already been out in the world, because he knows about military technology (and how to use it) and about criminal activities (the web in Our Mrs. Reynolds) and about Niska (The Train Job).

That doesn't necessarily preclude his being royalty. Someone that inherited a position of power, such as the second or third child of royalty, could easily be responsible for handling matters of planetary security for their older sibling. Having said that, I don't think he's royalty. Interesting idea though - keep 'em coming. The more Browncoats that speak up, the better!

You're a funny guy, Succa. Loved your short "Who the Hell is Shepherd Book?" Nice page.
