Anti-government crowd finds new complaint: Public transit service should’ve been better
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2009/10/06/ST200910

As it turns out, some of the marchers also had this odd complaint:

Not enough public transportation.

U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, a Republican from the Houston suburb of The Woodlands, wrote D.C. officials, saying older constituents had to walk or hail cabs and missed the start because overcrowded subways didn’t "provide a basic level of transit service."

Even The Wall Street Journal is laughing at Brady. Headline: "Tea Party Protesters Protest D.C. Metro Service."

Now let me get this right.

You go to Washington to vent about spending.

And then you complain that you can’t catch a publicly funded subway?

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Yeah, I got a kick out of that one, too.

Almost as funny as all the tea-baggers telling "patriots" to tear down their American flags and stain them with tea, thereby defacing them. Y'know - because they love the flag and the country so much...

Oh, and the VERY conservative little town of Taylor, Texas just had a big protest and petition against having a rehab center open up in town for wounded Iraq war veterans. Because "Support Our Troops" really means "Not In My Back Yard!". One of the worries was that these wounded veterans would snap in a fit of post-traumatic stress and open fire on old people crossing the street and kids on bikes. I shit you not.

What public transport, airplanes?

No trains in TN.

Buses are empty, run on no-bid govt contracts, parked in long lines with diesel engines running causing deadly pollution in downtown Knoxville.

It's like school buses that literally poison the school kids, then crash and kill kids because no seat belts are allowed.

The biggest polluter and killer is always gubmit.

Cops killing patrons of mass transit is a buzzkill.

" TAYLOR — A California company wants to convert an empty facility formerly used as nursing home into a trauma assistance center for as many as 88 female veterans, including those who have been sexually assaulted by fellow soldiers. "

One, how sad is it that you would need a seperate facility for how many? women who were sexually assaulted while serving their country overseas ?

Two, how sad is it when a town like this tries to resist it ?

" Pasemann said the trauma center would not provide an economic boost to the town. "We don't have enough jobs as it is," she said.

The facility would provide counseling and rehabilitation services to female veterans in Central Texas, Rivera said. It would also provide about 40 jobs, he said. "

self interested idiots, tar and feather time

Should pull any government funding state or federal for anything to do with this shit little town and let it tumbleweed off into the desert, as it appears to deserve

Also because in most places it doesn't even exist. I'm out in NW Indiana, not too far from Chicago, and we don't even have busses out here. The closest thing we'd have to public transportation would be calling an Uber if you didn't want to drive home drunk from a bar. That's about it.

Who wants to sit on smelly busses with bums shitting in the seats anyway? People are gross.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I'll try to answer the question.

It's called "the problem of the last mile" (or, since people hate walking, the last 500 feet.)

My parents got along with one car, but my dad had to walk a mile, rain, sun, or snow, to catch a bus to work. My mom drove the car to the hospital where she worked as an RN because there was no bus service there. The walk was good for his health, but he was raised a farm boy and used to labor. Not many people are willing to do that.

Suburbs are too spread out to service. Transportation companies would have to spend a fortune to install all of the stops they would need to service such a spread out population, and their total fares would be meager. You can reduce costs to some extent by making the vehicles smaller, but then efficiency goes down.

Along heavily traveled routes ... here, the freeways ... you can set up trains, and the collection point can be a "park and ride", but what about at the destination? Again, the last mile. There has to be some additional transportation at the destination - a combination of open air trams, driver services, vans etc to get people reasonably close to their destination.

Plus, our trains, buses, and cabs/ gig drivers - nobody seems to have coordinated them. I had to drop off our former yard worker at a train station and I was shocked to see it was bare of shelter, and there was no place to catch a bus or ride.

The 105 freeway ends at a very popular destination - LAX (los angeles airport) but it stops about a 1.5 miles short of the terminals. What would it have taken to set up a parking structure and a bunch of trams runnning the loop continuously to reduce airport congestion?

Hubby came up with a brilliant idea, called a "land ferry". You drive your car onto a rail car, and it takes you most of the way where you need to go.

Anyway, most cities and their associated suburbs simply aren't dense enough to support public transportation bc they were developed in the era of the car. It would take ingenuity to adapt public transit to suburban land use.

I hope that answers your question!

And, even in congested cities like NYC where subways are possible, or heavily traveled corridors like the 95- adjacent Amtrak service, there is the issue of maintenance and safety.

Did you know that Superstorm Sandy flooded all of the subways and many areas of rail lines, and NONE of the corroded switches were repaired? That means subways and trains have to run slow.

Trash, graffiti, predators and homeless and crazy people using public transport as hunting grounds or shelter. Why anyone would still use them ....

And switches and lines still haven't been repaired since 2012.
