Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury

Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies.

HFCS has replaced sugar as the sweetener in many beverages and foods such as breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS, but teens and other high consumers can take in 80 percent more HFCS than average.

"Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply," the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy's Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies, said in a prepared statement.

Four plants in Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio and West Virginia still use "mercury-cell" technology that can lead to contamination.

The use of mercury-contaminated caustic soda in the production of HFCS is common. The contamination occurs when mercury cells are used to produce caustic soda.

IATP's Ben Lilliston also told HealthDay that the Environmental Health findings were based on information gathered by the FDA in 2005.

But mercury in vaccines and dental fillings is ok, since brain damage is great for crowd control.

Damn are you late on the draw regarding this one, this is already common knowledge amongst a lotta folk, and lemme throw you a bone to bulk up your case against it with something other than hysteria.

I do think the revolting video campaign is outta line and reeks of the counterproductive backlash inducing tactics of PETA however.

That said - one thing that pissed me off recently was the lack of availability of ACTUAL maple syrup, all that shit is HFCS and the one that advertises not having any lists "Corn Syrup" as the first damn ingredient PLUS whatever the hell Sodium Hexametaphospate is, I sure as hell don't want it on my pancakes, thank you muchly...

And let's not even go there about Bisphenol-A, which of course temperature changes increase the rate of leeching - which they don't seem to get around telling you about on those handy "microwaveable" bottles, eh ?

I was right damn tempted to find a nice chunky maple tree at the edge of site three and pound a tap in myself, yanno ?

But apparently some enterprising folk down at Maple Grove Farms have carried the day, with a competitively priced GLASS bottle of REAL maple syrup, which I have noted that Walmart and Meijers both seem to carry, so very likely your local grocery store is packing it, and the reason there's no ingredient list on it is case what you see is what you get, Maple Friggin Syrup!

Tell ya what, it's right damn good too.

And if you want some soda that don't have HFCS in it, try Jones.

Of course, if you want to dig for conspiracy, have a look at how that whole sugar is bad for you bullshit came about, and the involvement of the folk who make HFCS in that little scheme - not at all unassisted by the fact that like a pack of dumbasses we're still basing our ideas on national health on the ravings of that madman Koop, who they KNEW was clinically insane when he was still surgeon general.

I quit sodas many years ago because of phosphoric acid (deadly toxic waste), which I take kidney medication to get rid of. Sugar/HFCS also effs me up.

The mercury in cola is the final straw.

The wife of our local Coca Cola bottler is on city council, voting to enforce the Police State and taxation grid. Coke is legally allowed to import cocaine which is "de-cocaininated". The pure cocaine is then resold.

Problem now is HFCS is so many other foods.

Hopefully I'll have my own garden and chickens soon.
