Since so much negativity is easy to find about Muslims on the internet and around the world, here's one from the other side:

Islamic Relief is sending an emergency response team from the UK and the US to Haiti tomorrow to assess the damage. But at present it appears that the most pressing needs are for food, clean water, medical care and shelter.

The head of Islamic Relief's Humanitarian Department, Moustafa Osman said, "This earthquake is the worst to strike Haiti in 200 years and it appears that three million people have been affected, many of whom have been left homeless and without food or water."

"Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, where endemic poverty, food shortages and conflict are a daily occurrence. The country often struggles with natural disasters such as hurricanes but this earthquake is a disaster of an unprecedented scale and people need urgent assistance if we are to prevent many more lives being lost."

Islamic Relief has already made 250,000 available for the initial response. We will be working through local organisations in Haiti who already have experience of implementing projects in the country. Our partner in the United States, Islamic Relief-USA is also sending $1 million worth of emergency aid to the stricken country in coordination with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Charity is a big part of the Islamic faith

( oil sheiks aside )

more than a little ironic when the US criminalized most Muslim charitys limiting their ability to assist each other, and seizing money given with that intent...

Keep the Shiny side up

Individuals are individuals. Some Muslims contribute to relief for Haiti, and some are suicide bombers. Some Christians contribute to relief for Haiti, and some are Pat Robertson. Folks should be judged not by their labels, but by what they do.

Ongoing problem, alas - it also discourages folk from donating to them cause you never know when they might be labelled as such and you find the goddamn MIBs kickin in your door, as one Ann Arbor college professor found out a while back, and it's the reason I use dead drops and cutouts to funnel assistance to RAWA.

Geeze has the right of it, though, people are people, and should be respected as the individuals they are, bonus points that doin that keeps folk from playing divide and conquer against ya.

Good to hear all that; that's why I put it up. Doesn't hurt to recognize that all Muslim's aren't suicide bombers now and again; we tend to talk about the latter all the time and rarely, if ever, the former. Kudos!
