Amnesty International is calling on Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah to stop the execution of a Lebanese man sentenced to death for "sorcery."

In a statement released Thursday, the international rights group condemned the verdict and demanded the immediate release of Ali Hussain Sibat, former host of a popular call-in show that aired on Sheherazade, a Beirut based satellite TV channel.

According to his lawyer, Sibat, who is 48 and has five children, would predict the future on his show and give out advice to his audience.

The attorney, May El Khansa, who is in Lebanon, tells CNN her client was arrested by Saudi Arabia's religious police (known as the Mutawa'een) and charged with sorcery while visiting the country in May 2008. Sibat was in Saudi Arabia to perform the Islamic religious pilgrimage known as Umra.

Sibat was then put on trial. In November 2009, a court in the Saudi city of Medina found Sibat guilty and sentenced him to death.

According to El Khansa, Sibat appealed the verdict. The case was taken up by the Court of Appeal in the Saudi city of Mecca on the grounds that the initial verdict was "premature."

El Khansa tells CNN that the Mecca appeals court then sent the case back to the original court for reconsideration, stipulating that all charges made against Sibat needed to be verified and that he should be given a chance to repent.

On March 10, judges in Medina upheld their initial verdict, meaning Sibat is once again sentenced to be executed.

"The Medina court refused the sentence of the appeals court," said El Khansa, adding her client will appeal the verdict once more.

The case has been covered extensively by local media. According to Arab News, an English language Saudi daily newspaper, after the most recent verdict was issued, the judges in Medina issued a statement expressing that Sibat deserved to be executed for having continually practiced black magic on his show, adding that this sentence would deter others from practicing sorcery. Arab News reports that the case will now return to the appeals court in Mecca.

That's nuts - but then, I've always had issues about our cozy relationship with the Saudis given how intolerant they are.

I will say that while we are more tolerant, it's not as sure a thing as folk think, having been beaten and shot at over it, as well as threatened with arrest under the UCMJ, and I am not the only one who almost got courtmartialed for my beliefs, as my buddy Rev had JAG (EDIT: according to him, was CID) all up his ass and a full investigation for it (and a notorious incident with the MPs which had the misfortune to be caught live of AFN) as well.

Btw, I actually dug up some of the newsbits on that coven shooting I mentioned.

This was before my depth perception went to hell, mind - I got sent down there by folk I owed favors and "explained" to those redneck assholes that pissing off wiccans could get expensive...

By blowing out the radiators of their trucks from three hundred yards away with MickT's precious hunting rifle.

THAT stopped the bullshit, and quickly.

Well, other than Gingrich, no - and he ain't no prize either...

Problem with a lot of it is that perception that all non mainstream beliefs are a buncha happy-fluffy pacificist new-agers they can just steamroller, who'll wilt at the first sign of violence.

Even funnier is the somehow mistaken belief that hippies and flower children were like that, which is not true - yes, they were against war, for many of the same reasons I am, one of which is no desire to kill some poor dumb shlep who's only REAL difference from me was to be poor and stupid in another country, who I prolly have more in common with than the leaders on either side.

But that does NOT a pacifist make, you push a hippie or flower child too far personally, you're really likely to get your ass kicked!
Just cause they prefer reason, compassion, and dislike confrontation when it ain't likely to solve nothin doesn't mean they're wimps, it means that they prefer means other than force, is all.
That does NOT mean they're not willing to use force in their defense, not by a longshot, most of the leftovers I know who still live on a couple communes are well-versed in the MEANS of violence, they just desire a life where it has no place - which is IMHO, pretty cool, Ghandi would smile upon them...

Anyhows, the hippies and flower children weren't the wussified pansies revisionist authoritarians would have you believe - they call it "berserkerly" for a reason...

And so too with modern beliefs, which are as varied as people are, and so when some nimrod fundamentalist, intolerant, authoritarian shitheel gets the idea that they can screw with the pacifist "weaklings" and play the game of might makes right, welllll...

My response is to introduce them to my Astaru friends, and that usually goes something like this.

Me, I think they're kinda mental, but if you're gonna go bonkers, why do it halfway ?
