An ignored tiny part of the health care reform bill which I think is great, and for which "it's about time"!
Quote:

The student lending overhaul ends the current program that subsidizes banks and other financial institutions, allowing students instead to borrow directly from the federal government. The bill, which first passed the House in September, also would greatly expand the Pell grant program for low-income students. The reforms also aim to revitalize community colleges and increase support for minority-serving institutions and historically-black colleges.

“Year after year, we’ve seen billions of taxpayer dollars handed out as subsidies to the bankers and middlemen who handle federal student loans when that money should have gone to advancing the dreams of our students and working families,” Obama said. “But this time, we said, would be different. We said we’d stand up to the special interests, and stand up for the interests of students and families. That’s what happened this week. And I commend all the senators and representatives who did the right thing.”

The legislation would save an estimated $61 billion over 10 years. Universities that participate in federal lending have just a few months, until July 1, to switch their financial aid systems to the new “direct lending” program. Starting in 2014, the legislation will also cap a graduates’ annual student loan repayment at 10 percent of their income.

Republican opponents of the legislation have denounced it as yet another “government takeover,” and the banks, not surprisingly, have lobbied hard against this switch.

Nobody? Nobody who wants to trash the health insurance reform bill can give it any points at all for doing away with assininity? I realize it only gets a couple of teeeny points, but I for one was tickled to see this aspect...what we've been doing, with the banks getting fat off it, has always seemed incredibly stupid to me.

More Gov't control of our lives. What's not to love ?

Sheep.

Bit by bit, piece by piece, the Gov't is turning into the sole proprietor of your soul. And you're just fucking giddy over that.

What a shame...you were doing so good in that other thread. No, I'm not giddy about more government control...I don't think you grasp the issue. To put it in minimalist terms:

WE, by taxes, have been paying for the government to give money to the banks to give to students, in essence, and for banks to reap the reward of the interest on that money.

NOW it will go directly from government to students, taking out the middleman who was making a PROFIT off our taxes.

It also would increase funding for education, while SAVING money by cutting out the banks and financial institutions who have been making a profit.

If you want to buy into "government takeover" then you are simply swallowing the party line and not actually reading and THINKING about the issue. The government ALREADY pays student loans, ALREADY handles Pell Grants, and ALREADY contributes to education. There's no more power given to the government, no new regulations, no takeover; just an increase in available money for students and removal of the profits from banks, which never had any valid reason to profit from being the middleman!

Re-read it, Raptor, and THINK about it, before spouting the usual stuff.

Here's a novel idea.

Why not compete ?

Or cease giving tax $$ all together ?

What ? Why compete when you can control the entire industry, and run it all yourself!

Just like all lending institutions...

Just like auto companies...

Just like healthcare.....

Compete how? The government gives out grants for education; you think someone else should--or would?

As to ceasing giving tax dollars entirely, I realize you don't grasp the concept that education is important to a society so that WE can compete globally, and that you're anti-taxes no matter what form they take, but it's a senseless argument, thankfully. The government gives LOANS for education (and gets paid back in return); education is the cornerstone of a strong society.

You still don't get the basic concept this fixes. Government already DOES "control" grants to students (that's an "industry?"); it just gave the money to banks to give to students. Now it gives it directly to students...there is no change, there is no increased control, no new laws, nothing changes the students getting the loans--the ONLY change is that banks will stop making profits MERELY by taking money from the government and giving it to the students. You're in favor of banks making even more profit off our tax dollars for doing absolutely nothing? That's weird!

Why then is the Gov't forbidding any private lending of $$ now to education ? Why are they monopolizing it ? If Suzie or Timmy want to take out a loan for car or a house, do they go to the Gov't as well ?

( Yes, it's an industry dear. )

So, now all our needs will be met by the Imperial Federal Gov't, there's no need for pesky banks to make any profit. Who needs them anyways, right ?

Crappy, pure idiocy. Of COURSE the government doesn't forbid private lending; more often it's private donations and scholarships, but I'm sure many take out loans to go to college or to put their kids through college...that's absurd!

Of course, so is your entire post: "ANY" profits? You don't think banks make profits off anything THEY lend money for? This was just a gimme to the banks, as they did nothing but take the money in and hand it out, and for that they should make a profit off our tax dollars???

Pathetic attempt to go after the government without the slightest understanding of the actual issue. What assininity; give it up.

Yeah, Chris, silly of me to piss into the wind ad try to get it to understand, wsn't it? Mea culpa
