Quote:An underground blowout is a special situation where fluids from high pressure zones flow uncontrolled to lower pressure zones within the wellbore. Usually this is from deeper higher pressure zones to shallower lower pressure formations. There may be no escaping fluid flow at the wellhead. Underground blowouts can be very difficult to bring under control, and if left unchecked the fluids may find their way to the surface or ocean floor nearby.
Quote:"...All is going according to plan," that is the mantra BP intones; it may be that BP is fighting the problem that many industry types feared all along: an underground blowout. An underground blowout, actually more common than surface blowouts, is uncontrolled flow from the blowout zone to a weaker zone communicated with the well bore. In extreme cases, the flow can break down these zones, or adjacent casing shoes (seals) of the larger, shallower strings of pipe in the well bore, which can lead to flow actually coming to the surface completely outside of the well itself. This scenario is doomsday, only containable through a relief well at the bottom of the well. BP may be being very careful to not put too much back pressure on the cap, thus the well, because it may cause a zone to breakdown and start an underground blowout, or, more likely, that it happened during the top kill attempt, and that they are already fighting it. If an underground blowout gets to upper strata, or up the well bore outside of the existing strings of pipe, it's game over; uncontrolled flow until the relief well kills it. If this is what they are fighting, somebody needs to say something. Surely, they are monitoring the sea floor surrounding the wellhead just to see. If they're not, the need to start.
Quote:Oil and gas may be leaking from the seabed surrounding the BP Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico, Senator Bill Nelson of Florida, one of the most informed and diligent Congressmen on the BP gulf oil spill issue, has received reports of leaks in the well, located in the Mississippi Canyon sector. This is potentially huge and devastating news. If Nelson is correct in that assertion, and he is smart enough to not make such assertions lightly, so I think they must be taken at face value, it means the well casing and well bore are compromised and the gig is up on containment pending a completely effective attempt to seal the well from the bottom via successful “relief wells”. In fact, I have confirmed with Senator Nelson’s office that they are fully aware of the breaking news and significance of what the Senator said.
