So Obama is gonna talk to us from the White House. Do you thinkhe'll announce he's taking over? That the escrow account or temporary receivership is being done? Or just that "it'll be okay, I promise"?
Quote:

By choosing to speak to the nation on Tuesday night for the first time from the Oval Office, where his predecessors have spoken of wars and disasters, President Obama is conveying the gravity of the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

“We now can give people a very frank assessment of what this is going to be like over the next several months and the steps the federal government is going to take to ensure full recovery and restoration for the region,” said Dan Pfeiffer, the White House communications director.

At a staging site for cleanup efforts in Theodore, Ala., Mr. Obama referred to the fishermen, shrimpers, oystermen and others he had met in four visits to the Gulf Coast and described their fear that the spill “can have a long-term impact on a way of life that has been passed on for generations. And I understand that fear,” he said.

Mr. Obama contrasted the still-unfolding disaster with the region’s experience with Hurricane Katrina: “It’s not simply one catastrophic event. It’s an ongoing assault whose movements are constantly changing.”

(excerpts from http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/15/us/politics/15obama.html)

He said it would all be “back to normal” in a few years. Anyone taking bets? As for those assholes at BP:
Quote:

BP released Thursday one of the oddest statements since the Gulf oil spill disaster began. In response to a 16 percent drop in its share price yesterday, BP said in an SEC regulatory filing Thursday that its financial position was strong and could pay for the Gulf oil spill. Which isn’t odd at all, except that the whole SEC filing kicked off with this statement: “The company is not aware of any reason which justifies this share price movement.”
http://industry.bnet.com/energy/10004785/bp-gaffe-of-the-week-we-dont-
know-why-our-share-price-is-falling/?tag=shell;content

Like...they're kidding?

Did you hear the other amazing things they've said just lately? It’s getting to be a daily-faux-pas-by-BP stupidity situation. Doug Suttles, COO (the guy who said there were no”large concentrations of oil” by way of denying oil plumes), has explained their listing of walruses and sea otters on their Regional Oil Response Plan – Gulf of Mexico by saying the document reacts to ALL species that could be affected by oil species, not one “unique to the Gulf”. But it’s the GULF OF MEXICO RESPONSE PLAN, idjit... The plan also lists as one of the contacts a guy who’s been DEAD for over five years!

Even more amazingly, when asked why drilling technology has progressed so greatly, while cleanup technology hasn’t progressed at all, he responded
Quote:

I think events like this typically advance the technology by leaps and bounds. I think probably part of the reason is that there are so few big spills. The events haven’t driven the technology change that’s out there. I think this event probably will...”

No big spills. Shall we count how many there have been in the past 40 years, or do we need to?

These guys have really screwed the pooch, and are being caught with their pants down virtually every time they open their mouths. The Response Plan was obviously cut and pasted from something else; the technology hasn’t advanced because they haven’t put MONEY into it, just put money into technology to drill faster, deeper. Just exactly how stupid do they think we ARE??

I think your pretty stupid...but you are not far off the mark in this post.

BP...bad.
Oil spills...bad.
Obama's response...bad.
Oily shrimp...bad, even with cocktail sauce.

I note for the record that Olive Oil is very good with shrimp and the technology to deal with an olive oil spill is readily available in the bakery section of your local grocery.

NOAA also said something ridiculous about the concentration of oil being low recently. Where the hell were they sampling? The concentration is not low. You can use your EYES and NOSE to tell you that.

I think they were backing up BP.

In all fairness though, response plans are often copy pasted from something else, because the other older plans outline methodology in words that are readily understandable by the petroleum and environmental clean-up industry and also by OSHA.

Unfortunately, the usual methods don't seem to be working well because this is a very large scale spill.

Copied and pasted maybe, but not even READ to see if they're accurate? Bah. The "usual methods" aren't working so well because it's a big spill? The "usual methods" haven't changed in forty YEARS, and they had the Ixtoc to learn from, if they wanted to.

At the hearings, one of the questioners brought up the Ixtoc spill, the biggest one (to date) in the history of the world. He asked the oil execs, sitting there looking all important and serious, if they knew anything about this previous situation...

They all, all six of them I think I counted, sat there stony-faced...one even shook his head.

The pundit said we need to understand something from this. If you're a big wig in an oil company, spills DO NOT MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU. They are just non-issues, they don't exist. And if they exist, you do everything you can to minimize what people know about them, then move on. Precisely what BP is doing now.

There is no technology to cap a well this deep. There is no technology to clean up a mess like this. And there won't be money put into developing that technology, even after this. They know "these things pass" and people only vaguely remember the Exxon-Valdez. Except those who live there.

They don't care, it's not on their radar; it's not their bottom line. They work in an office, it never impinges on their lives; might be a financial problem for a short time--but someone else's, they still get paid--but hey, everyone needs oil, so it washes right over them (but that the oil should).

We need our government to TAKE OVER, dammit. Nothing good will ever come of leaving BP in charge. And the guy who's supposed to lead us isn't standing up for us. He did exactly what I thought when I started this thread. A PRAYER for gawd's sake?? Hey, I don't got a god to pray to, what am I supposed to do?

Large spills they don't know how to handle. Exxon-Valdez, Ixtoc, Deep Horizon, these are big spills. You're right, the technology for dealing with large spills is mediocre.

Smaller spills, on land, they can deal with to some degree. Not great, and I wish they didn't spill on land either, and I don't like that either kind of spill is usually the result of regulators and safety inspectors looking the other way. But I don't know if you saw, last Saturday 21,000 gallons of medium crude oil spilled into the river system around Salt Lake City. They pretty much managed to stop the leak that same day, the leak was prevented from reaching the sensitive wetlands around the great salt lake, and they've come up with a plan dividing the affected rivers into seventeen portions that they'll redivert and clean up, piece by piece.

It's going to be expensive as hell, which is irritating, and we lost a lot of fish. But there's a difference between a manageable spill, and something of the magnitude of the gulf spill. I'm in the clean-up industry, and even I couldn't figure any way they could clean up. It's unfathomable.

You missed the point. Again.

The beauty of that statement was that you were trying to denigrate someone else and call them stupid, and in the process of doing so, you completely misused "your" (it should have been "you're", the contraction of "you are").

But I see you still not getting it, which must mean that "your" pretty stupid... ;)

Also he said the one thing he would not accept is to do nothing.

I for one was reassurred to know that he would not accept just this leak go on and on. He just wont accept nothing being done and if he has to build tanks and fly to the moon to stop the oil I guess thats doing something.

Doing 'something' is his minimum standard, which is why he's been golfing, eating shrimp, raising money for Democratic candidates, hosting concerts, etc...cause doing nothing is unacceptable.

Sorry, but Rappy disagrees with you. He insists - INSISTS, I say - that Obama is doing, and I quote, "N O T H I N G". Not even breathing, apparently - which I guess proves that he wasn't born here, or something. So he's not eating, he's not playing golf (he probably swore to give up golf until the leak is capped, so we can be sure he's not playing golf, right? Right?), he's not eating, he's not fund-raising...

I mean, how could he be, if he's doing absolutely nothing?

I think your right. I answered the original question incorrectly.

Originally we were asked how stupid we thought the person was. I merely agreed the person was stupid without any sort of measure of 'how stupid'.

I should have said, I think you are somewhat stupid...less then very stupid, more then mildly stupid...certainly not the most stupid and far from the least stupid...in short stupid none the less.

That probably would have satisfied everyone. How stupid did you think they were?
